I recently saw a story about a couple who were bilked out of a lot of money in an internet adoption scandal. I then understood how wanting something so badly could make a person vulnerable. Little did I know I would be the victim of a similar scam - one that preys on the helpless fear associated with being unemployed in this economy.

My husband and I met at a major computer manufacturer and worked there 11+ years. A layoff was eminent in October of 2000. An old friend of his suggested we contact Bernard Haldane for help getting a job. We had a meeting with G. Michael Vignery of BH in the Colorado Springs office in October to discuss their program.

We were careful to define our needs clearly:
1. We moved here from Houston and really just needed a foot in the door since we don't have a network of friends or family for job leads
2. At James' income and management level, we were finding few jobs listed in the paper and online so he needed another avenue to the hiring managers

At no time did we state that he needed a new resume, interviewing tips, or a Myers-Briggs test. To date that is all we have received. We never expected BH to get us jobs, what we needed was a network...management contacts, which as everyone knows is half the battle. What Mr. Vignery implied was that Bernard Haldane had the inside track and more. In fact, we made sure that we understood what they provided asking, So what you're saying is that you meet with upper management at all these companies, find out what their needs are, and if there is a fit you put us in contact with that manager? His answer was, Yes. We have Haldane people in many large companies. Bernard Haldane has no such relationships, but the deceptive sales pitch continued and it's the same sad story as all the other BH complaints here.

Sounded like exactly what we needed, and since it was recommended by one of James' former managers we paid them $6,300. As you might guess, the contract promises COMPLETELY different terms than what was discussed verbally. As Mr. Vignery handed it to us, he said, "You can read this legal-eze but this just says we don't promise to get you a job." Aside from the unnecessary career counseling tools stated above, all we received was access to a web site with company earnings and the names of CEOs which are available for free elsewhere. Incredibly, when James asked about all these job leads and contacts that he was promised, he was told to look in the paper/the internet - the very resources that Mr. Vignery told us would get us nowhere!!! So far the Haldane resume has gotten no interviews, but James' original pre-Haldane version has gotten several.

We are both still unemployed and now have a giant credit card bill to pay for this scam. We have asked for a refund, but have not gotten so much as a phone call from them.

If only someone would go into one of their offices with a hidden camera, they would be exposed and no more vulnerable people would be taken! If we had the money, we would hire a private investigator to bring a hidden camera into one of these sales pitches and send the tape to Dateline NBC or 20/20. A class action law suit would be hard to accomplish since this company has offices in most US states.

We have requested a full refund and quoted some of the stories in here as backup to our claim. I will let you know if we get our refund. If anyone knows the address to that mysterious customer relations office in Ohio, I'd appreciate it.

For a good laugh you can call their "Customer Care Line" at 800-HALDANE! I almost laughed out loud when a generic machine answered simply, "leave your name and number at the tone" Still waiting for that return call :o)
