Purchased a laptop at Best Buy, along with a service plan.

The service plan was sold to me with the understanding that it took over after the warranty expired.  It does not!!!

Needed service on laptop and found out Service Plan, which was supposed to be there, ran concurrent with the warranty.

Complete waste of my money. Best Buy gets rich off of conning consumers into buying these things. I'll never shop there again.

They, of course, don't care, according to my customer service call. Customers aren't their concern and neither is keeping them.

In today's economy, it should be. They could end up like Circuit City some day and need customers. See how many service plans they sell when that happens.

Go to Wxx-Mxxx!!!  Their Service plans take over after warranty expires. I used to work there and their plans do not run concurrent with warranty. Had one been where I was at the time, I would have purchased my laptop there. It was an emergency replacement.

Sorry about your experience.

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (U.S.A.)

I work for Best Buy (for around 6 years), however I am not a sales associate. I do attend the meetings and am on the sales floor occasionally and understand their polices regarding protection plans. They used to be called "PSP" and now are called "BTP", which stands for black tie protection from the geek squad branding. There have been others as well such as "PRP" or product replacment plan.

The PSP and BTP were never meant to be extended warranties. If it was sold to you and that was implied, the sales associate was an idiot or a scammer. Best Buy has been drilling into us since I started there...and still till this day, that the service plans are NOT extended warranties..and do not tell a customer it is because they know most people don't believe in extended warranties from surveys.

I am not going to tell you if the plans are worth it or not..since it is a gamble. If nothing goes wrong with the unit during it's coverage..you got nothing but insurance out of it. If something does and is covered, it can save you from having to purchase a new unit. I work there and see this every day.

I my dept it works as such. ALL products are covered 30 days though Best Buy. After that the manufacturers warranty is all you got. The service plans cover for the length of the plan generally things like defects, and malfuntions due to dirt, heat, humidity, dust etc. Most products under the plan will be serviced..some will be replaced with a product of equal specifications. So if you buy a car stereo and the CD is stuck in it..it will be repaired or replaced WELL past the manufaturers warranty which is generally only one year. Most plans are 4 years but there are others as well. But they are not and never were intended to be extended warranties. However it does work in tandem with it and will give you additional protection well past the manufaturers warranty.

You may not have read the information pamphlet. We now MUST give it to the customers because if they purchase the BTP it comes up on the register at the point of sale "give the customer the BTP terms pamphlet" and the customer must check that they received it or the transaction and sale will not complete.

Once again I am sorry you had this issue..and I do know some sale people can be misleading to make the sale. They are NOT on commission, but are pressured to sell the plans. They can be a benifit and not a rip off if you need it and understand the terms..I just hope you don't blame the company itself if you were misled by a crooked of stupid saleperson..it can and does happpen and those that do that are fired if caught, and this includes managers..but they generally know better.
