I bought a Bissel carpet cleaner a week ago and wrote a check for it. Read their return policy on the wall in front of the cash registers and ask the cashier specially if I could return if I did not like the cleaner, he answered yes I could.

I returned the cleaner today and they told me that since I wrote a check and the purchase was over a $100.00, I could either wait and get a check in the mail within 14 days or get store credit. I ask if I got store credit and bought something and the person did not like it, could they return and get the money back? He said no.

I told him that their policy on the wall did not state that if you write a check for over a $100.00 or pay cash over $250.00 that you would have to wait for a check from their corporate office. He told me that it states it on the receipt. I told him that it was misleading if it just states on the receipt because you have to make the purchase before you would know this and you are in the same position.

I could collect interest on this money but they are collecting the interest on money that is mine.

I apologize but it is standard

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 04, 2005

Kelli, I apologize to you for your inconvenience. The problem with checks is that so often they are bad or stopped and we do not receive payment. That is why on larger purchases we use mail checks. Credit cards and cash can be refunded immediately. We have no intentions on "making interest" on your money. In fact, I will give you a gift card for more for your inconvenience. Returns on checks are pretty standard. That is why I don not use them in stores. You might want to do the same. I hope you will do business with us again. Please see/contact me if you need anything.

Write a check-Get a Check

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 24, 2005

I don't shop at Best-Buy because of their restocking fees-even if merchandise doesn't work. But, I think this case is the reason why they charge restocking fees.

1. You don't state why you returned it. Was it defective, then why not just replace it. I too think you were renting.

2. Second scenario is you wrote a check, wanted to get the cash before it was returned from the bank. Very common scam.

This whole thing is strange. I thought it was probably common knowledge you receive the refund in the form it was given. My brother works in retail. If he thinks someone is scaming him, he will require a check from their corporate office. 99% of the time they walk away, the other 1% say o.k. Guess which group is the scamers.

Something strange about this whole thing.

upped the offer

"And I do believe that we, as USA citizen have the right to return goods to a store for what ever reason. I am sure that they laws and stores have good reasons for this" - Kelli, suisun city, California

I kind of understand the first sentence, but I don't agree with it. I don't understand the second sentence at all. The thorazine must have been kicking in when you wrote that.

Do you even have a GED? you're witless and stupid. But the good news is, I'll raise my original offer to a buck but I pick the road, and it's I-5.

The Right to Bear Arms and Return Merchandise

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 24, 2005

Kelli:

You were so wrong when you stated we, as USA citizen have the right to return goods to a store for what ever reason.

No law requires a merchant to accept returns and give refunds unless there is a defect in the product. Most merchants voluntarily allow their customers to return merchandise simply to keep their customers coming back. You cannot compel a merchant to accept returns and those who do permit returns are under no obligation to treat every item or every customer equally.

No ripoff here.

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 23, 2005

How can you expect to get a Cash refund on a check purchase the previous day? Like no one have ever tried to scam a store like that before. Most any store would not give you your money back in that situation. (If you returned that same day, they may give you your original check back and void the transaction)

I fail to see how were ripped off, you could have waited for a refund check or accepted immediate store credit.

As far as the comment about walking into traffic, it may not be a bad idea. I've been in retail management for 10+ years, People like you who buy and return then buy more and return cost the store alot of money, which is passed on to the consumer. So thanks for making us all pay higher prices.

Response to crazy R. in Portland Oregon

AUTHOR: Kelli - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 23, 2005

It is obvious that the store lost nothing if they are hanging onto money that is not theirs, and it is obvious that I am a paying customer because they still have my money.

As far as selling to someone that is going to keep it this could have been done already while they still have my money. And I do believe that we, as USA citizen have the right to return goods to a store for what ever reason. I am sure that they laws and stores have good reasons for this.

I will not get into spitting match with a person who is obviously a miserable and unbalanced person who would state, I'll write you a check for your whopping 15 cents in lost interest if you promise to walk into oncoming traffic. My response to that is, you first and somehow I believe the world would be a safer place if you did so.

The store lost too

AUTHOR: R - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 22, 2005

You seem to making a big d**n deal over the 15 cents of interest that you lost. Well, have you thought of the store's lost opportunity to sell that vacuum cleaner to a REAL PAYING CUSTOMER?

They could have sold it to a customer who was actually going to keep it. Instead they let some tire kicker have it for week, at no profit. Now they have to re-stock it and try to sell it again. Probably costs a lot more than your 15 cents.

I'll write you a check for your whopping 15 cents in lost interest if you promise to walk into oncoming traffic.

Response to Andrew - ex-employee

AUTHOR: Kelli - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 22, 2005

Andrew, I do a lot of shopping and contrary to what you say, I have never not receive my money back from a store if I have returned something with a receipt. I don't know why any store would do this but to benefit from the money that they hold on to.

It is a small amount of interest just on my purchase but if you know anything about accounting, then you would know that just a little from all the people that buy from them and return their items, that this could literally add up to millions if not more per year. We are talking about a large retail store.

I know that I personally will never do business with any store that has this type of policy because I know what they are doing - I do have knowledge of accounting practices.

Response to the people who assume that I used the cleaner

AUTHOR: Kelli - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 22, 2005

The cleaner was never even opened - I have a proheat bissell carpet cleaner already. This was one for my daughter but she decided that if I was going to spend that much on her then she wanted something for just her - not to clean her house.

You know what they say about assuming! I hope this answered your unfounded assumptions about the cleaner.

Best Buy rental service eh?

AUTHOR: Andrew - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 22, 2005

I somehow get this feeling that you "rented" the vacuum cleaner. How can you not be satisifed with it? I know it's not because you didn't try it out at Best Buy using the displays they have and are plugged in so people could try it out. I know it's not the look and feel of the vacuum cleaner because there are displays you can play with.

By the way, most retail businesses will have their corporate office mail you a check if the amount refunded is over a certain amount. Go ask Macys, GAP, Victoria's Secret, or wherever you shop at. Why you ask? Because it's not very secure to keep hundreds if not thousands of dollars in cash in a single cash register. Plus returns/exchanges interfere with the revenue numbers of the store for that day. Just be patient and you'll get your money back.

Dummy me went down to the store and rented one.

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM LARRY?

AUTHOR: Debbi - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 19, 2005

LARRY, I DO NOT KNOW WHAT PLANET YOU ARE FROM EITHER, BUT A RECENT TRANSACTION AT BEST BUY ON WETMORE IN TUCSON A $25.00 DEBIT (I PUT IN MY PIN #), WAS CREDITED AS A VISA TRANSACTION BECAUSE BEST BUY WILL NOT REFUND CASH ON A DEBIT PURCHASE. THEY SAID THAT IF THERE IS A VISA OR MASTERCARD LOGO ON YOUR DEBIT CARD (MOST HAVE THESE), THEY PROCESS IT BACK AS A CREDIT. THIS MEANS THAT THEY KEEP YOUR MONEY FOR THE 3 DAY PROCESSING PERIOD THAT IT TAKES TO PROCESS THE CREDIT. IN OTHERWORDS, THE MONEY IS WITHDRAWN UPON COMPLETION OF THE "DEBIT" TRANSACTION BUT TAKES A FEW DAYS TO PROCESS AS A "CREDIT CARD RETURN". I'M SURE BEST BUY IS MAKING QUITE A BIT OF INTEREST NATIONWIDE ON THIS PRACTICE. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE IN ARIZONA REGARDING THIS PRACTICE.

response to ex-employee

AUTHOR: Kelli - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 19, 2005

It is clearly not posted in the Fairfield Store and I did ask for one of the employees to point it out to me which she could not. That is why I took at picture of the big policy signs posted on their walls in front of the cash register.

As far as my debt card, I had left it at home in my pant pocket so had no other choice but to write a check that did clear through my bank.

As far as charging, I never do this when I can pay for the merchandise.

What century are you in?

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 19, 2005

Why do some people in the 21st century insist on using a 19th century financial paper to pay for purchases? Why didn't you trying bartering with chickens at the general store?

The problem with checks is that the bad ones look just like the good ones. A merchant has no way of knowing whether the one you wrote is good until it clears the bank. This why many businesses no longer take checks.

Use your debit card or pay cash and you avoid the hassles with checks.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

the return policy is EVERYWHERE

AUTHOR: Miss - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 19, 2005

Not only is the full return policy on the receipt, it is also posted in BIG print right over at customer service. It is also located at every single POS register in the store. And it clearly states that "check purchases over $100 and cash purchases over $250 will be refunded by a mail check from the corporate office with 14 business days of the return." I'm not saying that the policy is good because frankly I wouldn't want to wait for my money either but it is posted everywhere so you can see before you buy.
