My daughter purchased World Warcraft from your store in Pineville, NC. The sales associate told her that the game could be played as a stand alone. She gave it to my son as a present. We opened the package and in reading the manual found he had to play on-line and there was a monthly subscription fee. None of this information was available without opening the product. Neither of these options are acceptable in our situation.

I tried to return the product to the store. Unfortunately, my daughter being young did not save the receipt. They did try to do a phone number look-up but our home number did not show up. My daughter does not recall the sales clerk asking for a number. She does not recall the sales associate's name but does remember that he was a Warcraft fan. He spent about ten to fifteen minutes discussing the various characters and scenarios with her.

I spoke to the person doing returns, her supervisor and a senior store supervisor. At first I was told that with a store receipt I could exchange it for the same product. This, of course, would not solve my problem. Then I was told that if I had the receipt I could get a store credit but without one there was nothing they could do. I do not understand why the receipt would make it legal to provide us with a store credit but without one it is illegal. Evidently they do not have any problems with young customers being given incorrect information.

It was almost if they were running a script when they spoke to me. They basically kept repeating the same phrases over and over expecting me to give up.

At one point someone from the Media department was called over. I thought that they might try to ascertain who the sales associate was. The only question asked was if the game needed to be played on the Internet. Why, unlike the sales associate, would I lie about a thing like that?

This product would not have been purchased if my daughter was not mis-led by the associate. I find it amazing that nothing can be done to satisfy us as customers.

Because of the mis-information provided by the sales associate I have two unhappy children and a game that we cannot use.

In addition to this I did not appreciate another employee standing in the background and watching my discussions and laughing. I found this extremely disrespectful as well as unprofessional.

Best Buy does not track in EJ by sku. SCPL only works if they used a credit card. Cash transactions are tracked, but how do you know which cash transaction is the customers? Say for instance, two of the same cd is purchased by two different customers and that is all they bought. Then how do you know which goes to whom? You could be screwing another customer out of a possible r/e.

how to get your refund

AUTHOR: Kristy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 31, 2006

the store (if it really wanted to) could do a "no reciept" return.. company policy allows 1 per year, per customer.. they usually require a driver's license# be entered into the system this prevents a customer doing hundreds of returns without reciepts (shoplifting items and attempting to return for cash)

The truth is best buy doesn't want to do the return and per company policy (SOP) there are no returns on software or music cd's... only exchanges for the exact same item.. So what's the point (in the store manager's mind) of wasting time to find your reciept so they tell you it's not possible.. and to have a nice day.. it makes you feel better...and places the blame back on your daughter who will them feel guilty for losing the reciept.. well it is possible..I I would still attempt to get a reciept.

when dealing with best buy as a customer (or any of the complaints posted on this website) you need to put your own feelings aside and view from the store's perceptive "why should we help you? what's in it for us?" as a customer you also need to be thankful that they are allowing you to buy things from them.. and they are doing you a "favor" by allowing you to shop there and you have no other choice but to buy from best buy.. and act this way (sincerely) when talking with them.. I know it's crazy.. but do you want a solution to your problem ..to return your item for a refund, have your broken TV fixed etc. or whatever issue your reporting or just to argue and be "right"

in my experience working at best buy over several years before I quit.. if the manager is male.. having your wife /girlfriend deal with the situation tends to get better results (just smile & be friendly asking for their help... and not being confrontational or challaging male ego) appeal to emotional needs make them want to help you.. also dress appropiately if you dressed like a slob you tend to get less service.. my advise business casual. and you will tend to get better results then having your husband yell at them..

I've seen managers at my store make exceptions based on simply being nice to them as they get yelled at alot by customers. so there is "company policy" and manager discression.. a manager at best buy can do almost anything they really want to do especially if there store rating is within the top 10 in the entire country. a best buy in Beverly hills area is generally going to be more flexible then one in east LA area. that is struggling to make revenue.. once you get the reciept if your local best buy doesn't do the return.. try another one..

explain to the best buy manager you DO NOT want a refund from Best Buy . but if he could help you find your reciept so you can mail a letter to the game manufacture for a refund.. (you may not agree to this, but do you want a copy of your reciept or not? and you can change your mind (it's a girls prerogative) latter once you have the piece of paper in your hands

and that you've been told he can check "green screens" to find it.. mention a family friend works as a manager at best buy in another state and it can be done using some codes "cssn scpl" in green screens..by mentioning this your tell the store manager you know how there system works..

if you paid using cash.. you maybe told .. "by law cash transactions are not tracked" really? if a best buy employee cash drawer was missing $100 it's not possible to find the transaction? sure it is.. every transaction is tracked.. (even training mode one's) it's just much harder...

your daughter needs to know the exact date of purchase.. next take her back to the store.. have them scan the item for a "price check" and get the best buy sku# for the game.. lastly have her physically point out the exact store register she was rung out on. and ask what is this computer's register ID#

using the date, sku# and register# they can find your reciept.. using "electronic journal" if they really wanted to.. best of luck.. in reality you should be thankful.. were talking about a video game here.. read some of the other posts on best buy.. about people's home being flooded due to installation errors on kitchen appliances etc. and don't shop there again.

Internet connection and monthly fee IS on the outside of the box

AUTHOR: Jodi - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 31, 2006

I am looking at my box for World of Warcraft right now and it says, "first month of play included, internet connection required, additional online fees apply" on the front of the box, back of the box, both side panels of the box and the top of the box.
It's considered a stand alone game because the software in the box is the only software you need to play the game. Stand alone doesn't have anything to do with if you play it online or if you have to pay a monthly fee to play.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

I am amazed...

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 31, 2006

that they would give you store credit at all.

Their return policy clearly states that opened software may ONLY be exchanged for the same software and that is WITH a receipt.

"None of this information was available without opening the product."
Wrong, this information is CLEARLY on the box.

Just curious, how old is your daughter? and your son?

#1 UPDATE Employee

That's Too Bad

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 31, 2006

Honestly, the sales associate was correct saying that World of Warcraft could be played as a "stand-alone" game. It does not require the purchase of any other previous software to play. Though an internet connection and monthly subscription to play World of Warcraft, those facts are listed on the exterior of the game box. All online subscription basd games have that specific information listed directly on the box. I conclude therefore that it is your own fault for not reading the description on the box and finding that the game requred those things to be played. As for the laughter of the one associate, well, I wouldn't have laughed - while you were present.
