On Thursday, July 5th, 2013 I took two (2) antique lamps to Best Electrical & Hardware on Peoria, Tulsa, OK to be rewired. One was a Brass Kerosene Banquet Lamp that I purchased and  had previously been electrified improperly. The second lamp was a heavy brass and steel Electric Table Lamp from prior to 1910 that had been in my family since inception ... this lamp had two Bulb sockets on it with the pull chains. Because of the one lamp being a double socket and the other being improperly done to begin with, I decided to take them out to be done rather than redoing them myself.  Best advertised on a TV news program that rewiring lamps was one of their services, so I did no further checking them our before relinquishing my lamps to them. They said it would be 10 days to two weeks before they would be ready and the charges would be 12 dollars per lamp, plus  wires, etc and would order a chimney for the Kerosene lamp,  as they had none in stock that would fit it. Best stated the chimney would be between 7 and 12 dollars.

On Friday, July 6th, 2013 Best called me stating the lamps were ready ... I was nicely surprised that they were ready at such an early date. Saturday, July 7th, 2013 I went to Best Hardware to pick up the lamps, only to find that although the Kerosene lamp had been done properly, the chimney for it had not yet come in, and the electric lamp had had the brass ormolu knocked loose on one side of the base and the threaded unit and ball top that held the shade was flopping all over the place.  Since these two items had occurred while they were working on the lamps and the chimney had no come in yet, I told them that I would leave both lamps while they repaired the one and waited to the chimney to come in. They said “FINE”

Tuesday, July 9th, 2013 Best Hardware called again stating the lamps were ready and the chimney had come in.

Wednesday July 10th, 2013, am, I went in to pick the lamps up for the second time. The ormolu o the electric lamp had retightened down and at first glance the top where the shade screwed-on looked OK. The chimney for the kerosene lamp fit fine. I also purchased a 60W light bulb that would fit the kerosene banquet lamp and also fit within the chimney. They rang up the charges on the cash register and said the amount I owed was $80.00+. I was flabbergasted,  The old fellow said, well we had to order four chimneys to get yours and the chimney was $17.00. I was flabbergasted and to boot, the fact that he had to order four to get one is his business and not mine anyway!! I said nothing, wrote them a check and departed.

When I got home, I took the electric Table lamp to the master bedroom, plugged it in and attempted to put the screw-on finial and silk lamp shade back in their rightful place. I then notice that not only is the thing still flopping all over the place, but that they had a new shiny brass something or other to the threaded center shaft, which now stock up in the air 1/2” higher than would allow the shade and screw-on final to lock down. Thus there was no way it could be used in that state.  I immediately called Best Hardware and told whomever was on the other end of thee line my plight. He was courteous and asked that I take a picture of it and bring it back in with the shade. I told him I could not take the picture, as I Had no way of printing it, but I would bring it back in with the shade so they could see the whole she-bang.

Thursday, July 11th, 2013 I again returned with lamp (and shade) to Best Hardware at 8:00 am as I was going to be i the vicinity anyhow. The fellow that does their channel six New Advertising was coming out the door, held it for me and welcomed me in ... thus I thought he would be the one waiting on me. I entered, put the lamp finial and shade on the counter, only to look up and find the the old man was waiting on me. He was belligerent and rude right from the get-go. In short, he accused me of bringing in a damaged lamp (which I did not), and that they refused to correct the damage properly. His exact words to me were:”What you expect me to do about it, do you want me to give you your money back’ (which he forgot about),‘we’re not going to do anything to it, for you or anything else, the fact is, it was made wrong to begin with”. The later statement being one of the stupidest remarks I have ever heard.

By this point, they had me so upset, I had the shakes. I picked up my damaged lamp, finial and shade and got out of there before I said or did something I would regret.

Junk lamp

AUTHOR: Jennifer Snead - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 22, 2015

I found this compliant to be devoid of fact and full of disdain for old people!! Best Hardware is an icon in Tulsa. This guy took some junk lamps and expected miracles? One thing doesn't jive...when I take lamps there , they never keep the shades!!! So his story doesn't add up. In regards to his apparent dislike for old people...the man he is talking about is as nice as they come. What does the guy expect?? The business give money away?? Mr. Hardy needs to get a grip!
