I wanted to split bill with part cash and part on debit card. I gave him 5.50 in cash. I found another dollar, so I gave that (he seemed happy about that, which I didn't think about until later). He had me swipe card, put in pin. He said it didn't go through, but the keypad showed it did. He said it didn't go through so I swiped again and again entered my pin (the remaining balance was about 47.00 when taking off the cash I gave). He said that went through, he gave me my receipt and I went to my car. I immediately checked if I was charged twice as that's what normally would happen when swiping twice. I was charged twice, 6.50 then 47 dollars.

I went back in and talked with the manager. She came over and talked to him. He said that I did pay 6.50 in cash as it was still sitting on the counter (he never put it in the cash register--and already checked out a couple of people after me). They quickly started discussing how he should have hit "cash" on the computer when I gave him cash instead of credit card. She took me over to her station and seemed to want me to get it back in cash, but I was persistent on getting it back to the card. She stated that it would take 3-5 days and I said okay. I found it odd that she didn't ask him any questions about why the cash was sitting to the side next to the computer instead of him putting it in the drawer. Also, the manager did not apologize for the situation.

Where is the RipOff?

AUTHOR: Robert - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, October 22, 2014

I guess no one can ever make a mistake before someone has the idea that there must be some huge consipracy to steal an entire $6.50.  You really think that the employee is going to risk their job as well as possible freedom by stealing what is probably not even an hours wage? If you do, I truly feel sorry for you.

Oh but you say...well who knows how many times they have done this.  Exactly...do you know?  Is this a habbit of yours to just start throwing cash down.  You couldn't even keep it an even amount you had to add in $0.50..and I just hope it wasn't in pennies.  Honestly it is customers like you that drive employees crazy.

So this employee made a mistake and you discovered it.  So what do you do, you go back to the manager and they say yep..it was a mistake.  No apology..okay perhaps a minor issue but not a major RipOff.  But again in your over complicated world instead of just taking the cash and going on, you want them to go through and refund the card(and have them still keep the cash).  Where even if they say it would be 3-5 days you are okay with that rather than just taking the cash back and moving on?????  Really? I just have one question on that, do you have some allergy to cash where you are not allowed to keep it?

Look, I am not saying that they are 100% in the clear, but nothing you presented here shows anything more than an honest mistake by an employee who was probably getting very confused by a customer who was making things very complicated.

As for the Manager not asking the employee about why the money was out, quite frankly that is none of your business.  It actually would have been very unprofessional for the manager to do that on the sales floor.  If there were any issues with what the employee did, that needs to be discussed off of the sales floor in private away from other employees and customers who are trying to stick their nose where it doesn't belong.
