During the last week of August 2008, I rented a car for one week from Budget Rentals in Halifax, NS. This was not the first time doing business with Budget (as I was a frequent renter) but it was definately my last.
I rented the car because I was moving and storing some furniture. As I was packing up some boxes, I heard a loud crash in the parking lot of my complex. I looked out the window, and to my surprise I saw that a lady had backed her truck accidentally into my rental, as she was trying to back into the next parking spot.

The damage was minor, but as a precaution, we immediately went to the Budget location that I had rented from to file a report with the owner of Budget. The lady claimed full responsibilty, and filed a report leaving her contact and insurance information with the owner. I asked the owner, if there was anything required from my end, and he told me NO because the accident was her fault and she was claiming responsibility. I left Budget that day, thinking nothing more of this incident.

Three months later I was charged $800 on my credit card from Budget. Prior to this I received NOTHING in the mail, informing me that I was respnsible for the damage to the car, not a phone call, letter, nothing, just a very large charge on my card.

I should mention, when I rent cars from Budget I decline their insurance for the sole purpose that my credit card covers my insurance for rentals.

When I spoke to a representative from Budgets Corporate Office, I was informed that because I declined their insurance, I was obligated to pay for the damages myself, irregardless of this lady claiming full responsibility.
Since I am insured, I contacted my insurance company right away. They informed me I was past my 90 days to make a claim, and they would not be covering the accident. Furious, I contacted Budget and told them of how my insurance was not covering this incident due to the lack of communication from Budget. Budget agreed to contact my insurance and work with them to avoid me paying out of pocket expenses.

In mid November, I faxed out a number of required documentation to both Budget and my insurance agency. I was informed both parties received their documentation, and it was all to be taken care of.

It is now January 2009, and I am still receiving letters from Budget to pay the $800.00. Budget has not returned my phone calls, and the agents extension who was dealing with this matter is no longer in service.

I refuse to pay $800.00 for an accident that I did not cause, especially when I was told from day one there was nothing required from me in regards to my insurance information. I have been totally ripped off and scammed from Budget. I have not rented since, I will never rent again. I am now looking for advice from anyone that has been through a similar situation with Budget, which apparantly this has happened to countless others.

Bottom line, they are a horrible company to do business with, and lack in customer service skills, they do not appreciate your business, and will go to great lengths to rip you off in any way possible.
