I have two phones with ATT. Back in July, a company called Buongiorno added a $9.99 "download" subscription to my ATT phone bill. I didn't even notice it on the bill every month until January, when I called ATT. ATT claims I must have sent a text to someone or somewhere to agree to the cell phone subscription (something I don't do), but I didn't argue since it started so many months ago. ATT refunded the most recent charge and stopped the subscription and put a purchase blocker on that phone.

OK... now what Cylon did was even worse. I've been on the look out for these things since this happened. I received a text message from an unknown number and that said something like "quick, enter the password xxxx for weather alerts, etc.", and as I was READING this message (thinking what a scam), another text message popped-up saying "thank you for registering!".

And, of course, a $9.99 monthly charged showed-up on my ATT bill this month. I did NOT even respond to the text nor did I initiate any text, and they simply added $9.99 to my monthly bill. Total FRAUD. I called ATT (what a pain) and had this reversed, but why should I have to? Will it happen again and again?

The company name is Cylon and it's near impossible to find their website or phone number, but I found this number: 888-351-6703, and called them. After some menuu prompts, I reached a very nice sounding young woman, who assured my they couldn't have added the charge without me going to a website and entering the password. I DID NOT DO THIS.

THE reason I am displaying ATT in this so prominently, as well, is that they MUST get a cut of the monthly charge, or they wouldn't include it on THEIR bill and collect on behalf of these criminals. I blame ATT more than, Buongiorno or Cylon. These are probably just petty thiefs that found some loophole to do this without getting arrested for theft. ATT, on the other hand, owes it to their customers to put an end to this. How can they possibly justify allowing this to be done to their loyal customers?

I had to call ATT twice now (never pleasant). Class Action Lawsuit, anyone?

Not AT&T's fault

AUTHOR: NV - (United States of America)

Everything you said up to the last paragraph was accurate, but this isn't AT&T's fault. The company charging you is at fault if they're not abiding by law and requiring that you verify your subscription.

As a CSR, these are our most hated calls as everyone claims to not know how it was started. 9 times out of 10, they're lying; though there are cases, like yours, where unauthorized charges appear. In those cases, we provide multiple tools to remove them. You can call us, go to att.com/mobilepurchases, or reply STOP to the short code. All of this information is listed right on your bill.

Blaming AT&T for this would be like blaming the Department of Transportation for GM charging you for an unauthorized subscription to On-Star. While I agree that it's inconvenient, sadly your blame is misplaced and should be directed at the company charging you.

As for AT&T getting a cut, we only get profit from applications placed in our MEdia Net, and even then it's a small cut.

The author creates an app, who then gives it to an agent to market. AT&T can pick it up, but we have to pay the author, and the marketer, so we only get 30% of the profit. (This isn't 100% accurate as far as percentages, incentives, etcetera, but it's the jist of things).

Either way, they're an annoyance for not only the customer, but us CSRs as well.

TL;DR - Your blame is misplaced. Sorry for your troubles, but you need to pursue the author of the application/service if you wish to do so, not AT&T.

AT&T

AT&T is not that bad but I do feel your pain. As it took me 6 months to get them to take off a 9.99 Jamsters "supposed" subscription. They did and will refund all your money at least they did for me. All it took was getting the "right" CSR. Some are not very pleasant but you can usually tell this by the attitude when they answer your call. If I were in your shoes, I would call them again. Remember you can get more flies with honey that with lemons. Explain the situation and try to have a smile on your face . I know its hard to do sometimes but give it another try.
AT&T is trying to stop this. At least is what I have been told when asking how in the world do these charges get added without me doing anything. The thing is someone probably went to a website and entered either a wrong number (yours) and /or these random people will add it and unless you look at your bill every month it can certain go on unnoticed. Found this out myself. I was also told well you had to subscribe...by one wonderful guy . I said I will call back later and did got myself someone who wasn't a jerk and took care of the problem for me. He also stated that AT&T is working to fix this nonsense because it happens a lot. Think of it like this, anyone can get anything now days. Doesn't matter what you do or how protected you think you are. The information is there and it doesn't take much know how to find it. I really hope you get this taken care of. I know you probably are not satisfied with my opinion but I do hope it helps just a little. Best of luck to you!!!!
If you want to do a class action against AT&T and the dsl horrible service ...I am with you!!!
