I've never shopped at Burlington Coat Factory before but I needed a coat and most stores don't sell them in July, so I went there. I picked out a jacket but wasn't sure if it was what I wanted, so before I paid for it, I asked the cashier if it was returnable in case I changed my mind. He assured me it was returnable so I paid with a credit card and left.

Later that day I found a jacket I liked better at another store and bought it. Today I tried to return the first one to BCF, but all they offered was a store credit. Since this isn't a store I normally shop at, I refused and asked for a credit to my visa card. The cashier refused and called a manager, who said this is their store policy. I explained about the clerk telling me it was returnable, which she agreed was wrong, but still she refused to honor the return.

They are telling me that their 'no return' policy is printed on the receipt, but the receipt was given to me AFTER the sale was complete and it was already too late to be undone.

Seems to me, if their clerk told me an item was returnable (there is a huge difference between return and exchange), then that is an error on their part and they need to make good on it.

Not True ..Whatever manager said that it could not be voided lied to you

AUTHOR: Christine - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, September 05, 2004

I am a customer service manager with Burlington Coat Factory. Whatever manager said that it could not be voided lied to you. I void same day transactions all the time. Whether they be from someone not agreeing with our return policy or a cashier making a mistake or a customer changing their mind. As long as the transaction is the same day it can be voided.

The return policy is also printed on a sign that is posted in front of the register along with the check acceptance policy and layaway policies. As well as the overhead signs. (Which I have seen many first time customers actively looking for and reading specifically to find out the return policy.)

Can't read before you sign if it's not printed yet!

How can I read the receipt BEFORE I sign it if they don't print the receipt until AFTER they've processed my credit card payment? By the time I was given the receipt, it was already charged to my credit card! And the manager herself admitted that by that time, it was already too late and their cash registers were "not set up to" void transactions or process refunds.

As for the signs stating their return policies, they are tucked up in a corner underneath a drop-down display over the counter... Not anywhere that the average person would notice them.

It's obvious that Burlington Coat Factory does not stand behind their merchandise, nor do they give a hoot about customer satisfaction. :-(

Read BEFORE you sign

AUTHOR: Christine - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, September 02, 2004

I am a current employee of BCF and have worded with this company for almost four years. If you purchased your jacket with a credit card, when you signed the receipt, the return policy was printed on your receipt above the signature line.

If upon receipt of your receipt, before leaving the store or even within that same day you had returned to the store stating you did not agree with the policy of return, the store manager or one of the assistants would have voided the purchase from your credit card.

The company policy is also printed and posted in front of all registers as well as aboove the registers on the over head signs. The cashier was correct in telling you that the merchandise was returnable to the store because it is. The employee should have gone on, however, to inform you that it would only be for store credit or exchange.

Tried that, didn't work :-(

AUTHOR: Crystal - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 02, 2004

Thanks for the suggestion. I already tried that, and it didn't work. I called my credit card company and they refused to reverse the charge because the company "was trying to work with me" by providing me with the store credit. They said they would take the charge off only if the store wouldn't give me a refund or an exchange. :-(

getting yr credit back to yr card

AUTHOR: Felix - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 02, 2004

hey crystal to get yr credit back to yr card just call your credit card company and let them know your returned the merchandise and you will get credit for it, i know, i used to work for BCF and we would never tell customers that, but we used to get the letters all the time from the credit card companies, when someone is disputing a charge, and the company never disputes them hope this will help you.

p.s so accept the credit and use it at a later time, because you did return the merchandise..i know it sounds like stealing, but they where trying to steal your money..RIGHT
