We bought a brand new Toyota 4-Runner from Burnsville Toyota, Burnsville, Minnesota in 1999. In 2003, the car had 78,000 miles and a perfect maintenance record. While on the freeway on evening, the car started to convulse and spew oil all over the pavement. It was towed to the dealers where it sat for nearly 3 weeks. They then informed us it was out of warranty (60,000 miles) and that the entire engine block would need to be replaced for $7000.00 and that they and Toyota were not responsible for the repair. I sent registered letters to Toyota corporate in Calif. I registered complaints with the Minnesota Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau, but they refused to negotiate or repair. We bought a Toyota because they say they stand behind their product and this is obviously not true!!

You are out of warranty. Your just going to have to suck it up and buy a new car. How is this the dealerships problem eh? This is why you should buy the extended warranty on the vehicle.....thats exactly what they are there for. My family has bought 7 new vehicles from the burnsville toyota for the past 10 years and have not been dissapointed at all.

Once the warranty is up, it is your responsibility. If had bought an extended warranty it may have been covered.
I agree this should not have happened at only 78,000 miles.
It may be way to late for any suggestions, but have you considered a rebuilt motor (they have warranties) and are much cheaper than a new engine, have you checked around with junk yards for 'totalled' 4-Runners that may have a replacement engine in good condition? Of course you would have to hire an independent mechanic to inspect these but either would probably be a whole lot cheaper than over 7 grand, which sounds like a rip-off for sure.
