I purchased a laptop from bestbuy.com last week with Microsoft XP but with a FREE VISTA UPGRADE. THey would even pay the shipping and handling charges. Just print the Rebate form and send it in for the Free Vista EXpress Upgrade Disc.
I called the Rebate center at 1-800-817-5602. They said this is false and bestbuy and circuit city are not telling the truth about this. There is just a discounted coupon you are entitled to. It is not free and you have to purchase VISTA. What a lie and a ripoff from such big companies at holiday time. We should all be entitled to a get a real vista upgrade for free. I am disgusted.
Please dont be fooled by the FREE VISTA UPGRADE LIE and dont buy from bestbuy.com.

The rebates are from the computer manufacturers

Go to bestbuy.com and search for VISTA, then scroll down to "Free Express Upgrade to Windows Vista". Compaq, eMachines, HP, etc. are all selling machines AND Vista, with XP installed as a temporary OS until Vista comes out, after which you can buy Vista and the computer manufacturer will rebate the cost and sometimes the shipping.
I Googled the 800-number you give ("Upgrade Redemption Center", not "Rebate Center") and Office Depot, e.g. gives a clearer explanation of the process than Bestbuy. But Bestbuy (and Circuit City) aren't making this up.

I am not a Best Buy employee, but I do work for xxxx and we too are offering the free vista upgrade. I do not know exactly how Best Buy's program works, but I know that when you buy a computer or laptop from us, we will give you a link to go to the manufacturers (i know thats spelled wrong) website and you can register with them for the free vista upgrade. They are then supposed to ship out the vista CD to you free of charge 4-6 weeks after Vista has been officially released.

Vista not even released yet - how about telling us EXACTLY what the coupon says?
AUTHOR: Ken - (U.S.A.)

First of all, Windows VISTA will not even be released to the general public until the end of January 2007. I am sure the coupon mentioned this, so why are you trying to redeem it in December?
Second of all, Microsoft doesn't give away anything, it is going to cost you, and probably was included in the price of the notebook.
Thirdly, you didn't include the actual text printed on the coupon you received with the laptop so that we can all see if we understand the offer the way you explained it. If it is incorrect, we would all like to see this for ourselves. There are manufacturers making this offer legitimately, and it is thier responsibility to honor the offers, not BEST BUY's the way I understand it.
Why not wait until Vista is actually released and see if this offer is honored?
