I recently was looking for a basic car when I found one at a Byers Auto lot. The car was as is but they took it to the main used car lot to check it out. I looked it over and then they hoisted it up to look underneath. There were several license plates underneath the car which the used car manager stated they were placed by someone because many cars rusted out in those areas. I said as long as the car was stable and safe I would buy it.
They tried to sell me a $1300 warranty but I couldn't afford that. The car was sold as is without a warranty. Well after buying it we had to fix several things to just get it to continue to run. Then the fuel pump went out and the gas guage stopped working. So we spent hundreds of dollars to get the fuel pump fixed.
In a few weeks my son was driving the car on the highway when some flames shot out from under the car and the car filled with smoke. He jumped out and then also noticed oil pouring out from under the car.
After getting it towed to a repair shop we saw pieces of carboard under the car by the license plates on both sides. The cardboard is what had caught fire. and threatened my son. The used car manager told me I should have seen the problems but I simply told him that I am a hospital nurse not a mechanic.
After contacting Byers they finally said that the card board must have been placed under there by us or run over and atttached while driving because they weren't there when they sold us the car.
I simply want Byers to refund my money because they sold me an unsafe and dangerous car that they should have checked out more thoroughly. They also told me they didn't have the money. Well I can't quite belive that, them being a multimillion dollar corporation. I simply wany\t Byers to do the right thing.

Where does common sense go?

Not to heap on more misery, but in my research on people's experiences in used car purchases I see many poorly educated, almost iliterate and clueless people buy cars and have no idea how to do so, never seem to read the contract, or protect themselves in these transactions.
In this case we have a mature (not 18-28) college educated NURSE... who knows that NO MD will just look at a new patient and issue medicine, or begin a surgery, without blood tests or exams of any kind!
So why didn't seeing oddball metal plates attached to the car not raise redflags? Why didn't the nurse take the car for inspection? Why do people simply cave in, and believe or trust every lie told by the seller? Why no research BEFORE?
The effort expended to complain AFTER the fact should be used BEFORE commiting to spending any amount of money for a used vehicle. But I see this over and over, crumbling to childlike behavior, blaming everyone else, over adult decisions they made.
I am truly sorry to see these people 'scammed', but the trolls in the used car world seem to know exactly how to engender trust, and sucker people into believeing every word. And the buyers willinginly participate in this, why?
Possibly poorer people just don't have the confidence to fight back against any 'authority' in their lives. Pushy salespeople can and do wear you down. This is a sad situation...and entire world of sorrow begins over simply buying a car.

Yes, you did buy it "As Is" which means you are not entitled to free warranty service. The other aspect of "As Is" means they are not sure of its condition and therefore will not take the chance of giving you a free warranty. Unless the contract has provisions of return, you are stuck with the car. You could have prevented this by having this car checked over by a mechanic of your choice and if they refused this then you would walk away.
