I thought I had finally found my first driving job(after getting my CDL) with a "respected" company out of Utah. Turns out they were liars and cheats, and that is putting it kindly.
Long story short, the recruiter failed to mention how much money I would need to pay their company to work for them. I let them take $50.00 for an unnecessary "administrative fee" but when they sent in a loan shark to finance the $500.00 "refresher course fee" I balked. After speaking to my recruiter he lied to me and said of course he told me about all of that and otherwise treated me like I was trash. I did ask to speak to his supervisor and to listen to the recordings they supposedly made of the recruiters phone conversations with me. I have yet to hear back from the supervisor or to have been provided the reputed recordings proving the recruiter did inform me. As far as I had been made aware of by this recruiter I would be attending an orientation, training and testing at their terminal facility and they would provide transportation and housing during this time(a week). No mention of any fees to complete their hiring process was mentioned, period. I declined their generous offer of bus transportation and requested reimbursement for fuel to drive myself there, which I did.

Because of the recruiters failure to inform me I spent my own money and lost opportunity costs to travel to their facility to have a dubious switch in employment processing made. I also paid for a redundant and unnecessary D.O.T. Physical as I have a current one on record. Fortunately, I did not sign their contract to pay the $500.00 for the refresher course they switched me into after arriving there. Leaving aside the lost job potential after agreeing in general to come and visit them six weeks ago I estimate that I spent a little over $250.00 in travel expenses. I will have to cut my financial losses short at that.

Besides the lie of omission on the part of the recruiter during our phone conversations there is also the face to face lie with him at the terminal where he verbally protested my complaint stating "You know I told you..." and insinuating that I was trying to get something for free from them. I would also like to mention that the person representing "Eagle Financial" who first informed us of the fee denied having any financial ties to C.R. England, when in fact his company is owned by the owners of C.R. England. He insisted that even if we pay cash we still had to sign the loan agreement! Add to that the atmosphere of intimidation presented by armed security guards and metal detectors (shielding the recruiters and other office workers) you can imagine the intimidation that I, as an inexperienced driver, and all the other students and new-to-England recruits must feel. I immediately felt as though a bait and switch scam had been played on me. Thankfully I didn't sign anything else or give them any additional money. If a company is treating me that way before I'm hired why would I expect they wouldn't lie and cheat after hiring me?

Can C.R. England make this up to me personally? If they wish to voluntarily provide some money based on my gas and hotel receipts that would help, but it wouldn't restore my faith or trust in them. I wasn't upset just for myself. I got to meet and know a little bit about the other people who were there just like me. In most cases they were very vulnerable to financial manipulation and I'm sure based on what I saw England was ready to pounce on them. I would warn anyone to avoid their lease program like the plague, but that isn't what this complaint is about. I'm not sure if there is hope of reform for companies that make manipulation and deception a standard business practice. My only advice is to stop conning people. Be up front about all costs and follow through on promises without using cover stories. People will either work for a company based on what they are willing to pay or they want, just don't lie to get workers in the door and then screw them out of their money.
