Camp Cookie is supposed to be "Horse Camp" for children. They call themselves a non profit organization but what they do is hire a bunch of kids to train other kids and so they profit all the money.

My five year old was there for a week and was ignored for most of the time. She didn't have a regular councilor and so had a new one each day the either didn't show up on time or didn't show up at all. The days were really warm and they don't take the extra care to make sure the kids are hydrated which really made me concerned. My daughter was hungry and thirsty and the councilor wouldn't let her eat till it was snack time.

When snack time came around she didn't even remind her. If you call and complain to 'Cookie' the person who runs the horses she totally apologizes but does nothing about it. All they care is if you are going to return next year or not. Smart parents enroll your kids in either dance or gymnastics camps they are way better can really instruct your kids.

took that long to get my horseshoer to get me the information as to where my horse was

AUTHOR: JUDY - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Thank you Cookie, it is good to hear from you. Amazingly, it took that long to get my horseshoer to get me the information as to where my horse was. He kept not knowing where the person was to whom he sold Elizabeth. I would call him and he would say he hasn't been able to get a hold of the person to whom he had sold Elizabeth. I tried to be very patient with him and not keep bothering him because he was going to contact that man as soon as he could. But time kept passing by. He only had told me that he thought my horse was at some girl scout camp and the name Cookie had something to do with it and it was up near San Juan Capistrano somewhere.

It was really my decision and I made a mistake being so personally open about my situation. I did not need to confide in anyone about my situation with my husband or about my source of an instant large amount of money. I just wanted to get my horse back right away. Yes, I am a Christian; but, I felt and feel that it is ok that I get my horse back if it is at all possible. I wasn't lying to my husband. I planned to tell him and I know he would have worked it out with me. I was willing to try to be submissive again as a Christian wife which I had been to my first husband for 28 years and abused notoriously to the point that I thought I would never be able to function as a normal human again. It was having Elizabeth that God used to help me get through it as I kept crying out to Him for grace and forgiveness to my first husband. He was a Christian and used the Bible to force me to submit to anything he wanted, anything. I learned after he left that it was ok for a Christian wife to disagree with the abuse of her husband and to know that it was ok to be happy in a marriage; that was the way God intended it to be. Getting my horse back was ok and I know Chuck would have worked it out with me. He was not like my first husband.

Cookie, I did not stand you up. I was terrified of you being angry at me and me having to stand up to you. Because of my past abuse of my first husband for 28 years, I was deathly afraid of standing up against anyone who was upset at me who was in authority or who came across as authoritarian. I had blackouts, hyperventilation, silent migraines, immense fear of people, especially men. I had ended up in the emergency room from my husband and my daughter took me and our two horses and wanted to move to North San Diego County from Eureka/Arcata area after my husband moved out. He had me living in the barn for six years while his sister and her husband lived in our home with our two children all the while they were going through high school and college and then he moved out of the barn after the six years. It was my punishment among many other punishments you would have a hard time hearing about. I was able to live with my daughter for one year and she went back to Humboldt State University to finish her schooling and I kept working down here at the job I had started with the City of Carlsbad. I am still there. It was a year later and my husband and I finally went through a divorce. I met my present husband six years later and wanted to help his daughter so much. I didn't realize it would hurt so much to see that my sacrifice for her would not make any difference. I have since developed ulcers in my lower large intestine. My doctors call it Ulcerative Colitis. I really need my horse back. I need to find her.

Cookie, you did not tell me while you had your knee surgery. You told me when I called during the October 2003 fires that you had left a message on my phone that I had 72 hours. I never did get that message. It had been erased from my phone and I had no knowledge you called. I wish you would have written me a letter and at least faxed it to my office like you had me fax a letter to you of apology to your office.

Elizabeth did not like to be close to other horses and she would challenge riders who did not know how to ride her correctly and who would try to mistreat her in any way or take advantage of her.

I'm sorry your main office was vandalized. Why would someone steal all the records from 1990 to July 28, 2004? It seems strange that someone would even think of wanting to steal those records. What would the need them for and who would have known about them or even where they were located?

I am glad for you that you have not sacrificed what I had sacrificed. I commend you for it. Please don't make me feel any worse for the mistake I have made. I certainly have learned. I know that I do not have to give my things away anymore. I have been doing that all my life and the ultimate was giving my horse away and seeing that it wasn't necessary and that it was too big of a sacrifice even if my stepdaughter had stayed involved with her horse. I didn't need to sacrifice.

Judy, what you failed to mention...

AUTHOR: Cookie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 10, 2005

Camp Cookie purchased Elizabeth from Happy Trails in good faith. There was no evidence of any type of problem with regard to whether there would ever be a dispute of ownership. After having owned her for over a year I received a phone call from your farrier asking if it would be ok to give you our phone number and location. I agreed, I was sympathic to your situation, I too have owned two horses for over 25 years as my pets. After speaking to you, you indicated that you wanted to buy her back, but that you could not discuss the purchase with your husband and told me you would put your purchase on a cash advance with your credit card company. After having told me what your belief system was and expressing your faith as a Christian, I advised you not to lie to your husband as that would just make matters concerning your ownership of Elizabeth that much more difficult, you agreed. I gave you the option of being able to come to San Juan Capistrano any time during non-program hours to see her and/or lease her if you wanted to. I told you she was the horse that I relied on the most for all my youngest campers and fearful students, I told you that I could not sell her until I found another horse that I could rely on. I arranged to meet with you and your husband and you were over an hour late and failed to call me and let me know. I agreed to sell Elizabeth to you for $2,000 and after stating that you would come and pick up the horse and pay cash you again stood me up and when I finally heard from you I was advised that your husband had changed his mind. I did not hear from you for several weeks and when I did hear from you again I was told you still wanted to buy her, supposedly with your husbands approval. At that time I was actually in the hospital after having had a knee replacement surgery and told you that I could not continue to do business with you in the manner that had been done in the past and that you had 72 hours to make your decision and pick up the horse. I didn't hear from you again for several weeks, I found a buyer and sold the horse. By this time Elizabeth had begun to show signs of adverse temperment and was no longer suitable for small children. When you contacted me again,I advised you that I had sold the horse and I ask you to stop calling. In July of 2004 the main office of Camp Cookie in Escondido was vandalized and all our records from 1990 to July 28, 2004 were stolen. To date I do not have record of the names of the individuals that purchased horses from me prior to July 28, 2004. While I do have some sympathy for your plight, I too have owned my first two horses for over 25 years and while there have been many times when life could have been much easier had I sold them or given them up, I have not. I believe that the mistakes we make in life serve as lessons to strengthen us for future life experiences, this situation that we find ourselves in has taught me a great deal, I pray that you will use this as a tool to go forward. Sincerely...

Does Anyone Know What Happened to the bay mare named "Lizzie/Elizabeth"??

AUTHOR: JUDY - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, January 07, 2005

I think Camp Cookie is a great place too. I owned a bay mare named Elizabeth for 11 years and unfortunately gave her to my horseshoer because I thought we couldn't afford to keep her and my new stepdaughter's horse too at $325 a month each. I thought my horseshoer would keep Elizabeth and use her for breeding to his stallion. Unfortunately, my stepdaughter did not even go see her horse again and my new husband eventually sold her horse. I wanted my horse back and searched for her; but, my horseshoer said he could not get a hold of the man to whom he sold my horse. It took a very long time, but my horseshoer finally told me my horse was at Camp Cookie in San Juan Capistrano. I now know that my horseshoer had sold Elizabeth to Happy Trails, a horse rental establishment near Mercy Road and I-15. Camp Cookie asked that I pay $2,000 to get my horse back, which I was willing to do; but, my husband was not wanting me to get her. We had not even been married a year; and, he did not realize Elizabeth had been my best friend and companion. I would go jogging with her in the park nearly every day; and, I only gave her away to help his daughter. It was wrong for me to sacrifice my horse. I have regretted it ever since. I had told Camp Cookie that I had to go to Oregon for a week to be with my mother while she was having her surgery; but, by the time I got back, Camp Cookie had forgotten that I had to be out of town and had thought I changed my mind and didn't want my horse back afterall. She had decided to put Elizabeth into the Summer Camp Program and did not want to disappoint all the children with me taking Elizabeth away right then. I agreed that it would be fine to keep Elizabeth there for the camp and in September I would come back and purchase Elizabeth then. It went back and forth between my husband not wanting me to get Elizabeth and Cookie saying I should obey my husband as a Christian wife. After that Cookie said she had called and left a message on my home phone and gave me 72 hours to come and buy Elizabeth. I did not ever get the message. During the fires in October 2003 I called Camp Cookie to see how the horses were doing up there and that is when she informed me that she sold Elizabeth to someone else because she never got a response from me within 72 hours. I thought my husband probably deleted the message before I got a chance to hear it. My heart was just devastated. I have tried to still find Elizabeth. Cookie is angry at me and will not help me find Elizabeth anymore. I don't ever want to give up trying to find her to get her back. If anyone knows anything about Elizabeth, I would really, really appreciate hearing from you.

Meighan, you still are not getting it.

POSTED: Monday, November 22, 2004

Meighan,

I am sorry, but it seems you are still misunderstanding Ivana's posts. Please go back and CAREFULLY read both posts. She is defending Camp Cookie, not knocking it.

I am not trying to be argumentative here. I am trying to help you see that Ivana is not being negative. She may have been wrong about her information regarding "Prince", but she is not saying it is Camp Cookie's fault he was put down. She thought that the Camp is loosing money because of this report.

If I lived in OC, I would gladly make a donation to the Camp. But right now my donations go to my local community. However, I do support the objectives of Cookie.

My only reason for posting on this report was to correct an improper observation by you about Ivana. If she is truly 11 and a volunteer at the Camp, then your comments could be devastating.

Dear Pat, I do owe "Ivana" an apology.

AUTHOR: Meighan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 21, 2004

Thank you for your comments re: "Ivana". If she is an 11 year old volunteer, I do apologize to her. She obviously doesn't know all about Camp Cookie and is not "in the loop" regarding the everyday procedures of running a non-profit horse camp. I do want everyone to know that Camp Cookie has NEVER abused or NEGELECTED any animal. As a matter of fact, Camp Cookie has rescued horses that would have otherwise gone to slaughter, or have been neglected or abused by other owners and have taken them in and rehabilitated them and/or vetted them back to health.

This is also an undertaking for a program to help children in need and animals in need when Camp Cookie can do it. Pat, if you are truly a person looking to help, why don't you donate in some way to Camp Cookie? It seems as though you live in Arizona but are you able to contribute in some way? Please go to the Camp Cookie web site at www.CampCookie.org. See what it is really about. We are getting ready for our annual Orangewood Holiday Party. I don't know if you know this or not, but Orangewood Children's Home is here in Orange County, California.

It is where children are placed in protective custody while their lives are trying to be worked out through the court system. These kids have been through who knows what, but, if they get a little happiness in being and working with the horses, it might bring a little joy into their lives. The holiday season is hard enough for some to deal with being away from their family. Camp Cookie tries to help EVERY child they can.

Could you help in a way of a donation? I hope so. Getting back to "Ivana", if she is 11 years old, she and her parents need to get the facts before posting false information on a website like this. I really gives out wrong information, maybe even unintentionally. The horse "Ivana" was referring to was a horse named "Prince" who was a long time Camp Cookie horse. He was NOT starved to death.

He was old and had been under constant veterinary care. He just stopped eating and was slowly starving HIMSELF to death. You know the old saying, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." The same goes for food. We tried EVERYTHING possible.

We loved this horse and he was humanely put to sleep by the treating veterinarian who also agreed there was nothing more we could do for him. He will always be forever in our hearts. The people at Camp Cookie work hard and have had some unfounded opposition from other stables in the area.

Some other stables in the area, which will remain nameless, seem to think that Camp Cookie is "taking away business from them". In reality, Camp Cookie only teaches beginning horsemanship and if some of these kids would like to further their horse training, Cookie actually REFERS thes kids to other WORTHY trainers in the area to further their education with horses in specified fields like Western Pleasure or English Equitation riding instruction.

Pat, If you are right, I do owe "Ivana" an apology. But my gut instincts tell me it is just a disgrunteled mother who really has nothing else to do but to go under the guise of an 11 year old and play the game of blame. I hope I am wrong. -

Meighan,

You need to go back and re-read both of Ivana's posts. First, she is 11 years old (I think you have gathered that by now) and is a volunteer there herself. Next, she is actually DEFENDING Camp Cookie, not knocking it. Just read the titles of her posts.

Her second post states that they are losing money because someone posted this ripoff report, and that the horses are starving because of it.

She then goes on to give examples of why she thinks some of the people are lying about what they say about Camp Cookie. Mostly dealing with kids who go back to their parents saying they did work, when in reality they did nothing.

I believe you owe this 11 year old girl an apology.

If "Ivana" is a child or minor, for that matter, why is she allowed to make comments regarding a business in a negative manner? If there were truly a problem with Camp Cookie or how it is run, don't you think the Camp would shut it's doors? I know for a fact that Camp Cookie has helped literally THOUSANDS of children. If been there and have seen it with my own two eyes. I have volunteered countless hours so that the children of Camp Cookie could come and have a wonderful and joyous experience. Camp Cookie runs on donations and paid programs ONLY. There are no corporate sponsors or grants, just the kindness of people who believe in the cause wether it is in the form of money or time spent down at the ranch helping the kids, cleaning , bathing, grooming the horses. It is a ranch and all of these things need to be done - EVERYDAY. We need more volunteers and the camp could always use money. What non-profit doesn't? It seems as though the same people are the ones helping out or donating money for the sake of the kids. A big Thank You to them from me. I hope that Camp Cookie is still around for my grandchildren, in that they could learn the love of horses and how much horses can give back in return.

Dearest "Ivana"

AUTHOR: Meighan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 16, 2004

This is a response to "Ivana's" most recent accusations/allegations: I have been volunteering at Camp Cookie for the last 2 Summer Camps. The camp is wonderful and great. There are paid programs for children and for those kids that can't pay. Some of the kids that DO NOT pay for horsemanship instruction at Camp Cookie are, but not limited to, the children of Orangewood.

This wonman may never have even heard of this organization because I doubt she ever contributes anything back to her community. "Ivana", maybe if you weren't so busy complaining about Camp Cookie, and being the "wonderful" mother you think you are, maybe you could be down at the ranch, helping the children like the very few and dedicated. I get the feeling that you are one of those "stay-at-home" mothers, with too much time on your hands and tons of money.

The kind of woman that doesn't like to part with her money unless it benefits only YOU. I bet that you like to dump your problem child on someone else so you don't have to deal with him/her so you can go have cocktails with your girlfriends, while your husband is working overtime, just to keep a woman like you "happy".

As for the "starving horse" that died, he was a beloved family member to many children. Some had even learned to ride on him and he will be greatly missed. If you were around "Ivana", you would have seen the outpouring of love and affection this horse recieved. We won't count the numerous veterinarian bills, countless supplements and other costs incurred to try to keep this 30 year-old, horse that stopped eating on his own, alive just for the mere fact that he was dearly loved by all that had been a part of his life, and how he touched so many other children's lives.

You weren't around for the buckets of tears we all shed regarding this horse and the great group effort that we all put in to make his last days as wonderful as they were. I feel you are a sour woman and I feel sorry for your child because he or she has to deal with a "mother" like you.

Please, don't come back to the ranch, you would only hurt others that come for the good that horses embelish on children. You'd probably be better off taking your child to counseling, it sounds as though your child is going to need it in the future. By the way, I feel you should return to school and learn how to spell.

Camp Cookie is good for you and your kids!!!

AUTHOR: Ivana - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 11, 2004

Hi,
This is Ivana again and I'd just like to tell you people who don't like Camp cookie that now because of the fact that camp cookie has no money the kids have to try and pay for the horses food and some even get some for the horses because Cookie is low on money as the councelors and instructors. Some horses are dying because they aren't getting enough food because of money problems!!! Sooo Now 1 horse has had to be put down because he was starving to death because of mal-nutrition and needed help that he couldn't get.Now look what all of you had done!!! Never mind that, I think that some people were lying and here are some examples of how:
.Camp Cookie lets you get drinks and eat food whenever and however you want!

.There has been a lot of 4 year olds and 5 year olds coming to do work and lying to their parents by saying that they did work when they didn't do anythind that any of the councelors knew about!!!

. Some kids think that they only go there, make other people do all th ework and then say that they did all the work and sometimes get cought not doing any work at all !!!

.Some parents lie about things because they like gymnastics better and maybe thinkl that doing chores around horses is wasting their time!

If your daughter or sun doesn't put the muscle in the job then they don't get to ride or they don't get treated respectfully because they don't treat the horses with TLC when they should if they are going to ride, Every 4 hours we get an hour of ride and you stay there from 5:00am to 8:00pm so you have a lot of turns in ride!!! If you have any problems regarding camp cookie or the founder of camp cookie whose name is Cookie please contact my e-mail adress because I'd like to have a really nice talk with you!!!

Camp Cookie is the best thing that ever happened to my daughter

AUTHOR: Kim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 28, 2004

My daughter has had the best time at horse camp, the staff and personnelle was very attentive to my daughter and called me immediately at things I thought very trivial and I appreciated their special attention to my daughter. She has learned alot about horses and gotten to ride and trot, wash a horse, learn about saftey and make new friends.

It is a very fun experience and I think its like heaven for kids, the chickens run around, its very "cowboy wild west."They did fun arts and crafts and I noticed while I was there that if a kid was hungry or thirsty, they were very attentive and concerned about it. I am so impressed that they have so many horses! my daughter also did nature hikes, and has had the time of her life. every one was very very nice.

It was very wonderful to watch my daughter ride a horse on her own! They gave her instruction on holding reiegns and on horse behaviour and they taught her how to ride! she had only been on ponies before this.I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family, and anyone who loves horses and animals!:)

#3 REBUTTAL Individual responds

My sincere apolgy...

Unfortunately I've just been made aware of the "Rip Off" report that was filed last year. I was contacted today (7-28-04) by another individual that had a less than positive experience at Camp Cookie. She advised me of the report and wanted to know if there was any way that her daughter could take advantage of the "credit" that I told her she could use in any of our other paid programs.

She will be attending a full week at Camp Cookie as my guest. In the report that was filed by Pamela, she stated that while I apologized, I did nothing. After seeing the report almost a year later I can image why she would have thought that, however, it is our policy to try to make up for mistakes made by our staff for whatever reason. We are a small operation, we are not funded by any type of state, federal or corporate funding and our main source of income is from our summer camp.

Refunds are difficult to make due to the nature of our season, we still have to pay employees even if they don't do the job the way they are expected to. I can say with confidence that this years staff is the best we have ever had and the complaints we had last year had been addressed and we even supply our parents with a form at the end of the week to evaluate our performance.

So Pamela, if you ever see this, please come by and give us a chance to show you that your comments were used to improve our program, we would love to have you and your family back as our guest so you can see for yourself that we do care, and want to fix the problems that families like yours bring to our attention. Once again, please forgive me for not giving you the satisfaction you deserved.

Camp Cookie Is the best thing that could ever happen to your kids!!

POSTED: Monday, April 05, 2004

I just wanted to say that camp cookie for kids is the best thing that could have happened to me or my brother.I am not really an employee i am a volunteer by my own volation. camp cookie has taught me so much about life it unbelivable like responsibility, respect and independent thinking.i also know a couple of kids who camp cookie pulled out od depresion.

i dont doubt that what happened to your child accually happened.it probably did happen but when cookie was having surgery and had just started comming back to the ranch and everything was hecktic.

but campcookie is a non prophet. all the money camp cookie gets goes to repairs, horse feed, and paid counslers.the organization itself doesnt make a dime.
