After 2 years of struggling paying our bills my husband and I saw a nice commercial on TV with happy people that finally had their debts reduced with this great company. It has been 7 months of hell, finally we had to turn off our phone I couldn't take another creditor yelling at me. Well a few days ago we received a summons we are being sued by one of our creditors. Needless to say after waiting over 30 minutes on the phone on hold a woman tells me that I have to go to the court house and file a response. Isn't that what we are paying you to do? NOPE! I asked the woman what have you actually done for us? She could not give me a strait answer. I told her that the letters and phone calls have never stopped. She explained to me that, there service does not guarantee that we will not be sued. Then what are you doing for me? What letters have been sent I want proof that you have been in contact with my creditors. She could not give me an answer. I told her I wanted to opt out of my contract. Then she explained my escrow I have 1611.05 in my escrow I have paid them 3080 in the past 7 months. When I asked where the money is she explained to me that we had to pay a retainer, retainer you pay retainers to lawyers that actually do legal stuff. When I first called there was a 90 fee each month to keep the account active. They would send me the contract via email sign it electronically as soon as possible to get the ball rolling. The fee ended up being 230.15 a month. The same amount as my car payment. Our credit is so bad now its going to take years to repair. Tomorrow we are going to see a bankruptcy attorney, a real one. Oh wait. Unfortunately the office that takes care of getting us our escrow was closed and could I please call back tomorrow. Please anyone reading this the commercials are so misleading. Then are not credit counselors or any form of legal help you need.
WE paid this company 1368.95 to do nothing.
Nothing like getting kicked when we are down.

Thanks Lissa in Youngstown. My family had a similarly unfortunate experience with the Consumer Protection Law Center (CPLC).

We started with the Campos Chartered Law Firm, and thought we were going to see some real progress. Not much happened, good or bad. We didn't have any legal actions sent our way yet, but did still continue to get the phone calls and letters from creditors.

Then we saw that CPLC somehow got into the mix. We discovered this first when I tried to call to Campos for something (can't recall now what it was, but probably to change the monthly debit date). Someone answered, but kind of gave me the runaround stating that Campos was just a lawyer group, they don't handle accounts, have to talk to someone else, etc. And by the way, we had a few different numbers and addresses for Campos, which should have flagged our attention much sooner. Then later we got something in the mail about CPLC. We were never sure if CPLC had acquired/consumed Campos as a company, taken just their accounts, entered into a partnership, or what. All we saw was a continuation of no progress being made, and then started receiving legal actions like summonses, etc.

Calls, letter, and faxes to CPLC received little if any response. The website has a place to "login", but clicking it brings up a page with nothing. Calls to their customer service were usually actually friendly, but useless: as you noted Lissa, they could provide no info on what actions were being taken for our account. Apparently, none were.

We just now have left CPLC and moved over to another debt management program. Don't know if I'm allowed to mention the name here, if that would be a promotion or advertisement. In any case the group is BBB accredited with a good rating, is based locally to us, and has an active website where you're able to see and manage your account.
