I purchased a pair of tires for the front of my car this past Friday. The parts manager Marcel, asked me the details and size of the tires, and so I went out to my car and read the actual size on my tires, as there were apparently 3 different sizes that could be used on the year and make of my car.

I went out to the parking lot and read ALL 4 of my tires and made sure that all of my tires were the exact make and size. They were.

I went back into the store and gave my information to the girl that was now at the desk, Liz, as Marcel was with another customer. She set me up with an appointment for the following morning, as I also needed an alignment on my car.

When booking my appointment for Saturday morning, I told her I needed it early in the morning as my husband had to leave for work at 2:00pm and we needed the car before that. She told me no problem as the job would only take 1 hour to 1 and 1/2 hours tops.

My husband drove the car over first thing Saturday morning and he too asked how long and was told the exact time quoted the previous day. He also asked for an oil change to be done too.

by 11:20 am we had still heard nothing which was almost 2 and 1/2 hours later and so my husband called to see when he could walk back over to pick the car up, and was told that they were just putting it up then, and that it would be ready by 1:00 pm.

This made me a little annoyed, and so I called the store to speak with the store manager about this, as we needed our car back, and I said that if there was a good reason for them to be that far behind as we were the second appointment of the day, that it would have been nice to have been called and told, so that we could reschedule if we needed too.

The manager called me back to give their explanation and said it would be ready for sure at 1:00.

We then received another phone call shortly after noon saying that while doing the alignment they found our canabers were rotted and that we needed 2 of the bolts and that they needed to be adjusted, but this meant a couple more hours of work.

Liz felt bad as she was the one that had booked me the day before, and so she offered to drive my husband to work so that he wouldn't have to pay the cost of a cab to the town that he works in.

I eventually got my car back at the end of the day, which was 5:40pm to be exact. I guess so much for an hour an a half tops.

Upon arriving home in my car, I noticed that my back tires looked odd, and then realized that they had taken my 2 BAD front tires and put them on the back of our car, which had GOOD tires already.

I was angry and called my husband at work. He was livid, but nothing we could do until Sunday morning when they re-opened.

Now as of today Monday, we are still being screwed over. They are telling us that they switched our tires, because the front ones were in much better shape than the back ones, as the back ones they claim were down to the metal in the centre.

This is not true, and the proof they are TRYING to show us is with a set of tires that aren't even the same make as the existing tires they moved to the back. We had Good Year tires all the way around the car, and these tires they are showing us are not even Good Year tires.

They shouldn't have even touched the back tires without asking us first, as they were not even to work on the back of the car.

When calling today and speaking with Marcel, he keeps telling me that his guys working there are really good guys, and they know what they are doing, and that they did the switch because the other tires weren't safe.

So basically we are wrong, and they are right. I find this ridiculous as this should never have been touched, and now they are showing us tires that arent' even the same as my originals, and so made an offer of paying for one new tire for the back if we buy the other.

My husband has phoned back and told them to forget it, because we shouldn't have to pay for something that should never have been touched.

They discounted our bill on Saturday by charging us half price for the alignment, and throwing in the oil change because they messed up with time and service that day. So today when Marcel offered to pay for one new tire, he said to me, it's basically as if you are getting 2 new tires for free when you see that you had your oil change thrown in and the half price aligment done!

I can't believe they would say this as they SHOULD have discounted my bill on Saturday, it was their screw up!

Now to take my 2 good tires, and try to show me another set and say that is why they switched them? Our front tires were completely bald from the alignment being out, and were poking metal through. The back ones were full tread with no wear at all, and now they are bald and showing metal, but this APPARENTLY is better than what was there!!!

If someone out there has a similar experience, please let me know, this is crazy, and I don't know where to go from here.

Very Typical Canadian Tire Auto Service Experience

AUTHOR: Donna - (Canada)

POSTED: Thursday, July 08, 2004

Angela,

I am sorry to read about your troubles with Canadian Tire Auto Service. I wish I could offer you a fast and easy solution but my only suggestion is that you stick to your guns and make them resolve the situation to your satisfaction.

Canadian Tire, while a pretty good retail store, is notorious for ripping folks off in their auto centre. We all get taken by them once and then learn from our experience and take our cars elsewhere. Buy the tires there, if you must, but have someone else put them on.

'Finding' extra work to be done is very common and it seems to be an 'across the board' type of thing, not just at one particular store location. (which leads me to believe that the problem comes down from head office) Even a simple $30.00 oil change can escalate into hundreds if allowed.

My husband brought his car into one of their service centres years ago for front brakes. Since he could replace the rear ones himself, he was very specific that they were not to touch them. Not only did they go ahead and replace ALL the brakes without his consent but they then presented him with a bill for well over $1000.00!

He told them that he had not authorized the extra work and that they had to put the old brakes back on. They told him that they couldn't because they had already thrown them out! (as if!) After he took the matter up with the service manager, Canadian Tire was forced to charge him only for the work authorized (about $250.00) and eat the rest of the cost.

As stated before, this is not a unique experience at Canadian Tire and I only hope that my husbands story will give you incentive to make them sort this out to your advantage.

Good luck!
