I purchased a Cane Corso Puppy from Debra Woods (Young) or whatever she is going by these days in Aug 2007. After six months my puppy started showing hip problems. I promptly took my puppy foster to my family vet. At six months his x-rays showed that his hips were so bad he had to be on medicine for pain and an anti-inflamatory. I contacted Debra as soon as i found out. She explained to me that these things happen and she couldn't help it. I was still under my health guarantee but she said I would have to send Foster back to her at my cost and she would ship me a new puppy of equal value. After the first time I seen Foster I wouldn't have sent him back and she knew that. In addition I wouldn't have paid to ship him back or for a new puppy from her. When Ipurchased Foster Debra went by Debra Young of Youngs Cane Corso. Afer I contacted her in regards to this she changed her name to Debra Woods and either changed her Kennel name or moved to a different kennel. Canton Cane Corso's in Texas. Youngs Cane Corso was out of Nevada. I received several calls from people after I wrote about her in a breeder report from people claiming that Debra never sent them their paper work on there puppies, there puppies also had hip problems, or other various things. I came in contact with her at Canton Cane Corso after researching her on the internet and again tried to contact her. When I did get in contact with her (close to a year after I purchased foster from her) she told me that I would get a new puppy from her and it wouldn't cost me anything. I refused. My vet told me I would need to put Foster down soon. He was in a great deal of pain and could hardly get up from a laying position. When I told this to Debra she said that I didn't have to put him down, if I really loved him I would have his back legs surgically removed and I would buy a wheel chair type thing for dogs. I was irate. Debra hung up on me and changed her number that night. I have not seen or heard from her since then.

I too have purchased a dog from her....

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 24, 2009

I purchased a female Cane Corso back last year around the end of October from Debra Young. We are very happy with our purchase and our female Corso has the best temperament that I have ever had in a dog. She can literally be taken anywhere with me as long as she is allowed where I am going. She has not had any hip problems, but she is still a pup. She is only 80 pounds right now, but this about when you start paying attention to those kinds of things to make sure that your dog is getting enough nutrition in their diet and to make sure that they are where they should be as far as weight goes. We have her checked regularly by our vet to make sure she is coming along well.

I have heard a lot of bad rap on Debra and don't really know her personally. She has always been very nice to me over the phone and I have talked with her on several occasions. When I purchased our male Corso puppy back in May, we learned more about her and that was when we learned about some of the bad experiences that some people have had with her. The breeder we had gotten our male Corso pup from had a bad experience with her as well. I honestly cannot say the same thing about her. I understand that bad purchases can happen with pets and feel very bad for the people who have suffered from the loss of a dog as I had lost my first Cane Corso when he was 11 months old (I didn't purchase him from Debra). It was unfortunate that we lost him and he is never going to be forgotten. My heart goes out to those who have lost their four legged companion as it is very hard to deal with. But even after losing my first Corso, it never stopped me from purchasing another pup as I have completely fallen head over heals in love with the breed. I couldn't ask for a better dog for my family's lifestyle. I may do some more research on the breeder that I am purchasing from and may or may not purchase a dog from Debra again.

My female Corso that I had purchased out of Debra Young's kennel still shows to have good hips and is quite the sweetheart. We do plan on screening her for hip dysplasia around 2 years of age to see if she will be okay to breed, but that is just owner responsibility in my opinion and I wouldn't want to breed a dog that has hip problems to begin with. So far, our dog has turned out to be very healthy and has no problems what-so-ever.

Young's Cane Corso / Canton Cane Corso - Breeder needs banned from ALL Associations!!!

AUTHOR: Amy Kirk - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009

I have read both the report of the person with the bad experience with the breeder Debra or Deborah Young, now returned to her maiden name of Woods. I have also read the response from someone who indirectly has a dog from the lineage of Ms.Young/Woods. I too purchased a female Cane Corso Mastiff from Young's when the were in Crescent Valley NV. At about 11 months of age, my dog also went quite lame, and in the Vet reports, they indicated Hip Dysplasia. My dog "Bella" was put on anti-imflammatory meds and pain meds to keep her comfortable. I also spent too much money to supplements from both sides of the country to try and assist her hips. I also have always had her on a holistic dog food ... Canidae. I contacted the breeder for advice ... she said to watch it and let her know. At 2 years of age, I took Bella for OFA films. These suggested hip dysplasia and arthritis. I notified the breeder again. The contract stated a replacement pup would be given should she not be physically sound. The breeder said to have her spayed, and send proof along with the xrays to her Vet in Canton, TX. (By the way ... after the first call, it took me 6 months to locate the breeder, as she changes numbers and websites often) I did all this, and was promised a pup from the current litter for about 6 months. Then, the breeder disappeared again. The breeder suggested earlier that I could keep Bella, and still she would send me a new pup. I told her I had found a surgeon whom could do hip replacement. This Vet was a founding person in the US for titanium hips for dogs. She told me it would be better to not undergo surgery but to put Bella in a wheelchair for her backend. I too believe that to be insane, as Bella was my hiking buddy and went everywhere with me. I wanted her to be active and relatively pain free. Anyhow, Bella is now a little better than 3 years of age. She is in significant pain all the time, but stoic as these beautiful dogs can be. I have searched and searched for the breeder and to no avail have I had success in finding her. She never replaced the dog, nor followed through with anything she has ever said. I have been a breeder of English Mastiffs, and always honored my contract. This woman and her husband if he is still involved need to be banned from the breed registries, the show circuit and not be allowed to breed any more dogs. It is a heartbreak and an expensive endeavor to look after these wonderful family members when they hurt. Just 2 weeks ago, I had to euthanize Bella. She suffered a stomach tortion, which although is usually caused by overeating/drinking then exercizing to soon after, this was not my case. Stress is also a factor in this ailment. Although all large breeds and large chested dogs are succeptible, Bella had not overeaten or drank too much. She had been in the house all day, and only grazed on her food which was always available to her. From the onset of symptoms to the Veterinary Hospital was an hour. She was unable to be saved ... I am angier now more than ever. Not that this part was the breeders fault, but that I have been in love with Bella since I got her, and all the expenses put into her to keep her comfortable and with me ... only to lose her at 3 years of age. I'm speechless. I'm hurt. And with all that I've paid .. it will be quite some time before I can afford another $2-3K for a new best friend. So those that want to defend this breeder without knowing her, I suggest thinking long and hard. Bella was exceptionally built conformationally, and an outstanding disposition as well. That doesn't indicate a reputable breeder. My 2 year old grandson is devastated by not have his "Yella". Buyer BEWARE!! I have been contacted by other persons with pups from this breeder who also experienced similar issues that were never resolved. I'd love one moment to speak my mind to this woman personally. She needs put straight.

I have a dog from Youngs whom is perfectly healthy and working on finishing his Champion title

I read your report, and my heart goes out to you. Losing a friend and companion is a horrible. I am curious to know if you received a contract/health guarantee from the owner regarding the purchase of your dog and if did not state on the contract that should the dog develop a genetic problem the puppy would be replaced only. Generally, most breeders contracts state just that. While i sympathize with you, i would hate to think that you read and signed a contract with the breeder and then became upset when she offered to honor her part of it by replacing the dog. Just because a dog develops a genetic problem does not mean that it is through any fault of the breeder. There is no way to predict these things, which is why the contract is in place. HD is very previlent in this breed, (they are (or were) ranked 5th on OFA list as a matter of fact) and while breeders can take such precautions as PennHip testing or OFA cert, it does not, nor will it ever, mean that all of the dogs from that litter are going to be free of HD. A breeder can only take the necessary precautions by testing, and i may be wrong is assuming that you verified that before puchasing the puppy. If the lady had an attitude, thats one thing and inexcusable, unless of course you did too. But she did what any breeder would have done and honored her contract by offering the replacement puppy. At our kennel, we offer a replacement puppy only on Show/Breed quality puppies, because thats why people bought them, to show and breed. So they need the puppy replaced. With companion animals, the contract is a bit different, but should an owner want to KEEP any puppy, we will offer to pay so much towards surgery for the animal, along with requiring the animal be altered. Regardless, i just wanted you to understand that i was sure the breeder did not mean to offend you with the offer of the replacement puppy, that it is just standard practice. ALSO, your vet should have never said the dog needed to be put down if he suffered from HD alone. He could have had a PPO or Femoral Head surgery for the HD. That does NOT excuse the option the breeder gave you which was outlandish!
NOW, with that being said, I have a dog that was bred by Debra Young and he is an absolute picture of health and is working on finishing his CH. title in conformation. While i did not buy directly from her, the dog that i have is of superior quality. So, while i do not know the breeder, nor have i ever spoken to her..... i know that she, at least at one time, produced nice quality dogs because i am lucky enough to own one. I hope that you have, or will at some point, get another Corso. They are one of the most wonderful breeds on earth and i would hate to see someone walk away from them because of what they felt was a bad experience. Good Luck to you in the future.
