My wife and I went to the new CarMax store in Gilbert AZ Sun April 20,2008 with the intent of selling our 2005 model vehicle. The only appraisal inspection was when the man went to the car turned the key on to check the milage. (not in compliance with written proceedures) given to us with their estimate.

We were Bald Faced Lied to by the Appraiser, the Manager of the store Purchasing Department. The individual who would have written the check.

I asked how they arrived at the current wholesale value of our vehicle. "We DO NOT use Kelley BB, or N.A.D.A., or Edmunds values, only our CarMax system", to determine your car's value. When we were given their offer for our vehicle, guess what? The printed value offer was from a Kelley Blue Book. printed page, the same one I HAD GOTTEN FROM THE INTERNET. Even showed pictures. What the standards were for Poor, Good and Excellent condition. ahowever, the price value was far far less than any of the above companies quoted, without ever "appraising our vehicle".

In short; know what your vehicle is worth, condition, etc. Do your homework beforehand and STAYAWAY! STAYAWAY! they are professional ripoff artist

Carmax Trade in or buying your car

All of you have to understand that Carmax and other dealers dont go by Kelley Blue Book, it is just a general guide to help people kinda know what their car is priced. Kelley does not guarantee you that you will get the price that they list. Kelley Blue Book or any other guide does not write you a check. Dealers determine what a automobile is worth by market value, market demand, depreciation rate, and they do consider kelley blue book and black book. Even if you try to sell the automobile outright, most people will read the KBB and then will try to negotiate down so either way, you will get wholesale price or close to it. Carmax buy your car is just an option for those who need to sell an automobile quickly. SO its up to you whether or not to sell it to them. They are there to make money. THey will hit you low because they recondition all their cars and then sell them at or under KBB. All dealers give you wholesale on your trade. If they say they dont then they are liying or moving the numbers around. If you dont like the price then dont sell it to them.
