If you wanted 'street value' for your car, then why didn't you sell it on the street? It is naive to assume that Carmax (or any dealer) would offer to purchase your vehicle for the same amount they would ask from a retail customer when re-selling it. If you didn't like their offer, why did you accept it? Carmax invested the time and resources needed to evaluate the condition and history of you vehicle and research it's market value based on demand. They provided this information to you at no charge, and gave you the option to reject their offer and use this information to help you determine a realistic asking price if you decided to sell it yourself 'on the street'.

In addition, all the details concerning the transaction are printed on the appraisal paperwork, including the fact that payment will be in the form of a bank draft. The time that your individual bank takes to process a bank draft has nothing to do with Carmax. If you think your bank is too slow, then complain to your bank, don't blame Carmax.

When I sold my truck to Carmax I received a little more than the KBB trade-in value, and a little less than what I would have gotten from an individual. Because my time is valuable, I chose to accept their offer, rather than sweat test drives and take a bunch of phone calls asking about the vehicle. I deposited their bank draft on a Thursday, and by the following Monday the funds were available in my account.

So where exactly is the rip-off? You sold them a truck and you expected to get a bunch more money for. Look at any dealer lot these vehicles are not selling some dealers are actually refusing to buy them or trade them, period! Read the news with gas prices over $4/gallon people arent buying these therefore dealers cant sell them therefore they dont offer much for them. You had the choice to walk away and I think they also explained the bank check to you and at that point you could have walked away again. They do this to ensure there isnt any issue with the legitimacy of the title. I endured this as well but instead of wasting time callin carmax rep not sure what they could do, I verified with the bank after a day or 2 the status of the check. If the check had cleared their end your bank can verify that over the fone and they can release the funds. Problem solved.
