I took my 4 wheel drive truck to this carmax dealership with the intent of trading for another truck. The trade in offer was about half of KBB and what other dealers had offered. The reason they gave for the lower trade value was that the 4 wheel drive didn't work. The 4 wheel drive won't work unless you manually lock the hubs but carmax was positive the hubs were automatic and you didn't have to lock them by hand. This is not a ripoff just incompetance and lack of knowledge on their part.

Carmax has yet to open a fantasyland location, so youre going to be unsatisfied no matter what.

It was a free cash offer. You have the right not to accept it. It is not tied into your house or another car or your kids' education. Take it or leave it. The reason they put the price they did on your car is simply this: That is what your car was worth. No if ands or buts. You could have a rocket tied to the back bumper but if when you walk in to Carmax they deem that it is worth so much, That is and always will be what it is worth at that moment to that company. There is no arguing this point and I don't understand how people think they can complain their way into more money. And since when do you have to lock the hubs on a 4WD vehicle? Is this like a 72 ford Bronco? How many cars did you see on the lot there where you had to get out to lock the hubs to put it into 4wd mode? None? precisely. No one wants your relic of a car. and chances are with it being so old it was in crappy condition. But since it was your baby you put it in as excellent on KBB anyways.

simply lock the hub and demonstrate to them that the 4 WD did work?

What the heck were you trying to trade in? I've been purchasing new trucks with 4wd since 1994 and NONE OF THESE TRUCKS came from the OEM with manually locking hubs.

The last 4wd vehicle I owned with manually locking hubs was a 1963 willy.
