I was sold a 2000 chevy venturew/ 57000 miles on it, in febuary 2005, 2 weeks after they sold me the van i took it back because the transmission was shifting hard and and rolling backwards while in drive or forward while in reverse. The service manager told me this was completely normal.

So I drove it for a few months like that, then I took it for a oil change. They informed me that the van still had the original filters in it that should have been replaced 27000 miles ago (so much for there 125 point inspection). They lifted my van up to change the oil and would you beleive we were pulling masking tape of the bumper from where it had been painted, obvious sign that it had been wrecked (another thing they missed on there inspection). Also the bumper was missing 4 of the 6 bolts that held it on the vehicle (did i mention their inspection yet?)

So i take my van back to Carmax, the shifting has become so bad that I inch forward a inch in my seat when it shifts gears. This time they actually take it to another company, a transmission shop, whom had to completely rebuild the transmission. There was brass shavings in the transmission ( inspection?). While it was at carmax i also told them the fuel regulator had gas all over it after my last fill up, i was told they would look into it, but it was never put on the work order so was never fixed. My husband asked carmax why they sold us a wrecked van, they stated that 5 or more panels have to be repainted before they will not sell the car. Anyone ever catch that in their commercials?

Here's the real kicker when you walk into there showroom there is a car that had been wrecked (picture on display) and repaired, only the front passanger side had been smashed and in bold letters it says you will never buy a vehical here that looked like this. Hmmm I only counted 2 panels painted there. I have now purchased a carfax report (duh shouldve done that before I bought the van) and there on the report it states it was repaired at a collision repair shop.

#5 Consumer Suggestion

Please don't discredit this woman's post; especially if you are a Carmax "damage control" person posting on this site

I can speak volumes about our Carmax experience right up to dealing to their Corp. legal department in VA.. They make me and my family sick in simple terms, and there is enough collective evidence on this site and elsewhere (Atty. general's offices, etc nationally) to warrant a Class Action suit in my opinion now...

Also, as far as car reports, Carmax and others say they will give you these. They should. However, many times, in the course of their manipulative practices of aiding, baiting switching and confusiing the consumer once in their dealerships, unless you "remember" to tell them you want it, they will simply NEVER present it upfront as an honest person would..

a CARFAX report ought to be given up front and at time anyone asks serious questions about a car's history. ONce you relaize how CARFAX works, it is verye asy for say, a dealer, who just got a car fropm an auction, will report to CARFAX very good and positive things about that car, which can also trick people who read it later on thinking wonderful maintenance was done by the dealership, when in the end, it may well not have!! Also, you may take that vehicle's VIN # and simply contact the car maker in Detroit, and they will also get back to you quickly whether any previous callbacks were imposed or not or when they were fixed.. I ADVISE this strongly on ANY used car people may be interested in purchasing.

DONOT let them patronize you.

DO NOT let them belittle you.

DO NOT let them may you feel like you are stupid and they know better.

DO NOT... I can go on, as there are time tested tricks utilized in how they conduct business and it has got to STOP!!

YOu may wish to go to Lawyer.com site as well, as there is a syndicated car fraud exposer who contributes to those attornies and has a program out of Knoxville, TN right now which will like to get anyone's story out about bad dealings by Carmax in general...

RESPONSE

No i didnt notice the transmission problem when we test drove the van, it was only noticable when it was warm. And as for the brass shaving it was the transmission shop that carmax sent the van to be repaired at that told us about the shavings and yes they paid for it after my $75 deductable, and the van was wrecked one year before carmax got there hands on it. Will not sell you a wrecked car is that, if they mean majorly wrecked car then that is what they should put in there commercials. But wait I havnt noticed those paticular commercials in awhile,.....gee wonder why?

Danielle, you expect too much.

Basically, their inspection means that they are pretty sure the car will drive off the lot without falling apart. They may or may not have known the car was wrecked, and don't care. Wrecked cars can be repaired if done correctly, so that alone shouldn't stop you. Dealers play dumb when asked if cars were wrecked, and sometimes they just don't know. They sell cars that are bought at auction, and they at at auction because something made the previous owner get rid of it. That's why they sell them out-of- state, they don't want you meeting up with the previous owner. Why do you think dealers won't give you a warranty on a used car? Because they are JUNK! In the future, do your research FIRST.BTW, check your mileage history for signs that the odometer has been turned back. If you can prove it has, then you'll have cause to really get them into hot water with the feds.

Wait a minute... is it REALLY as bad as you say?

I have trouble believing it's that bad.

Are you telling us that you could NOT notice this supposed transmission problem when you test drove the car? Are you describing the problem as worse than it was?

Most used car dealers repaint the front bumper of cars, because the front bumper gets all the knicks and scratches from the road. (Who wants to buy a car that has a nicked up front bumper? A repainted bumper does NOT mean the car was wrecked.

How do you know about brass shavings in the transmission? Who told you this? Did CarMax pay for the transmission repair?

Any car that has had 5 panels repaired can be recognized easily. From what I understand CarMax does not sell cars that have more than 2 panels worked on.

Finally, if you in fact have an official report that PROVES the car was wrecked, bring it to CarMax and they should refund your money.
