I recently attended Casey and Son Horseshoeing School and expected to get the quality education they advertise on their website and when you call them. What I received was a few books, 1- The US Army Cavalry Horseshoeing book, an equine anatomy book and their book that is a brief runthrough of the horse. There is no classroom instruction, no real training and the person that was teaching me was a second week student that didn't have a real grasp on what he was doing.
The "Instructors" or farrier in charge: Link, the owners son and apparent president of the school.... interested in learning his new phone, sports illustrated Swimsuit issue and his upcoming trip to Hawaii. Chris...interested in drinking and being friends with everyone. Ronney....actually did come training and asked questions and discussed the foundered horse and also showed some interest in helping people.
I was there 2 weeks which Ms Casey says isn't long enough to form an opinion but then says that most people say they learned more in 2 weeks than they ever thought they would learn. I learned exactly what I put an effort into learning and did quite a bit of that inbetween the drunk people coming into the bunk house most hights, sometimes until 3am.
Now to justify what I am saying, I have nothing to gain and nothing to lose in making this report. The Veterans Administration paid for me to learn there. I went to learn and found this to be very unprofessional.

This school is outstanding and very professional

I attended Casey and Son Horseshoeing School with many other BWFA members and students.  Link, Ralph, Ginger, Ronnie and the other staff members of the school are very professional and run one of the finest training facilities I've ever attended.  The training is very structured and well organized tailored to your needs.  I was a working farrier over two years before attending.  I was blown away by the knowledge and instruction at Casey and Son.  The negative comments are truly unwarranted and out of line about Casey and Son Horseshoeing School.

Retired State Trooper, Proud member/Farrier of the BWFA.

I stand by my initial writing!

I came to Casey and son with several years of horse experience and was there to learn to trim to save money by trimming horses at our horse rescue.

Ms Casey obvioously has me confused with someone else, there were storms  off and on but there was no power loss while I was there. I talked to people in the area of the school and C & S, according to the people I talked to then and some since have said that they wouldn't let them touch their horses.

I openly admitted what?  I am a retired veteran with 28+ honorable years in the military. Attitude problem? Yes, I expect to get what is being paid for and will not stand for people wasting my time. Negative comments? I never spoke to any of the other students about my time there and most of the off time was spent researching and studying the things I was there to learn regardless of the drunken festivities and underaged drinking (They advertise "NO DRINKING")  I can also safely say the only arguement I had at anytime was the last day when I was packed and ready to go and it was specifically with Ms Casey when I told her how things  were going.

"About Chris, several of the adult men had a cookout on a hot August day. If Chris had a beer, it was just one. He is very personable and enjoys talking about his own farrier business afterhours with the students."

I was there in for 2 weeks in March and it was quite cold for me on several days. "NO Drinking" means "No Drinking"  I'm not against drinking in anyway after all, I'm a sailor, its what we do. When it gets in the way of the learning, that is when it becomes a problem with me.

About this student wanting to learn how to trim his peraonal foundered horse, Ronney tried to help him without the horse there and with no photos, etc. offering as much as he could to a beginner. There would be plenty of time in his 12 weeks that he would see foundered cases here.

This statement is almost  close, I had pictures of many angles of a mule that was deformed and just asked questions about how to address the issue this lil girl was having and as I said before Ronney was most helpful.

As to the 3 books he received, there are others to read and not required to be purchased. The library of 50 plus DVD's we have are our own productions as well as many other farrier instructors and required to watch and learn from during their off hours.

The 50 plus DVD's can be seen of RFD tv or youtube most of the time.

I feel that this student is harsh on his comments and probably because I had to finally tell him to leave the property when he said he was leaving (after the two weeks) but continued to trash us to other new students coming in.

She told me to "Get off my d**n property" when I called her on a lie she was telling about not talking about other students right after she said things about that student. (Several witnesses to this as well)

It is unfortunate but NOT a RIP OFF !

It is unfortunate that this student has a complaint. He came to us with no real horse handling and owner experience.  He failed to mention that he did have classroom time, worked with horses learning to properly trim and balance hooves and shoeing experience. During the second week there were Tornados in the area causing much damage and power outages and no horses came in and we did not venture out. The second week was concentrated on forge work meaning shaping and modifying steel shoes using the gas propane forge and introduction to the coal forge. Also included was making hand made shoes from flat bar stock to help train your eye and hand corrdination. Forgework is about 50% of the training here and being a 12 week student, he was going to need extensive training.

This student openingly admitted on his first day that he had a personality and attitude problem and is why he left the military and it was apparant right off. Two other students came to the office to complain about him and his negative comments every day just about everything, causing one or two others to begin complaining about the excessive forgework. This student argued with an Instructor and other students about the way the hooves should be angled and the shoe applied. Now.. we are used to questions all day long, but an argumentative attitude is not helpful.

As to Link and his new phone, yes, he was on his way to Hawaii to work with a farrier for 7 days and was going to be able to send back photos of the horses and thermal imaging to the class.
About the magazine I cannot comment.

About Chris, several of the adult men had a cookout on a hot August day. If Chris had a beer, it was just one. He is very personable and enjoys talking about his own farrier business afterhours with the students.

Another note, the following week, when the other students returned, several were glad he was gone and one in particular had told his farrier friend back home about the week of forgework and how he did not care for forge work. His friend replyed that he should take advantage of all the forgework he could get !! Each one went back to work and all was good on graduation day!!

I really don't want to start a back and forth confortation and since this happened over a year ago and continues to be on-line, I felt I needed to comment.

Ginger Casey, Owner, Casey & Son Horseshoeing School
PS. I have never had to ask a student to leave in 24 years. It is unfortunate but NOT a RIP OFF !
For those of you reading this who have attended or teach at a horseshoeing school, I am sure you can see through his complaints.
