|My Rescue Organization was recently called out to this business because of a situation with feral cats. After surveying the area where the feral cats were located, we noticed that an extreme amount of trash, including plastic cups, plastic water and pop bottles, plastic straws, plastic bags, candy wrappers, donut boxes, styrofoam cups, liquor bottles, aluminum and tin cans, cigarette butts-you name it- had been allowed to scatter across the adjacent wooded area, creek bed and slough. In addition to that there had been deliberate dumping taking place of water heaters, toilet bowls, steel light fixtures, carpets, dishes, utensils and a hodge podge of other discarded items. Additionally, people had been dumping rotten watermelons, pumpkins and other foodstuff directly into the stream. There was also a very large cache of rusted tin cans that had been callously dumped into the creek bed which was approximately 20 ft long X 20 ft wide and almost as tall. If this entire scene wasn not enough to make one want to vomit, you then realize that there are literally hundreds of feral cats, along with miscellaneous wildlife trying to subsist in, on and around this human garbage. |
Upon speaking with the assistant manger (a twenty-something fellow) I was rudely told we should not be there.He was aware of the cat situation and had taken it upon himself to do something about it, which he went on to explain he was trapping the cats and dumping them elsewhere! When I explained to him he was creating a huge problem in another location, he callously replied that he would start hauling them to the pound to be killed! When I tried to explain there was another solution to the problem involving having a rescue organization such as ours perform trap, neuter and release, he became even more indignant. The hatred toward these innocent cats was quite obvious. He responded with "Corporate does not care about these cats or anything else that goes on here. Corporate has a deaf ear when it comes to problems. I told him I was sorry to hear that because it would be an opportunity for them to be good stewards of the earth and also receive some positive recognition by assisting us with some funding to clean up the area of the garbage and the cats in a humane manner, which does not involve killing them or taking them to the pound to be killed. If they would back us, we would do the hard work. The fellow became more and more indignant and then pretended to ignore me.
I also spoke with the manager, Crystal, about the problem and she was callous and indifferent also. A third woman I spoke with at the counter told me she was "terrified to take the garbage out at night as the cats would come running. I queried her on being afraid of little cats and kittens when all they wanted was to be fed as there was no food and she seemed to care less as did the others I spoke with.
This all left a very bad taste in my mouth. I then decided to see if there had been any other complaints about them and lo and behold there were a multitude to be found online. The most frequently mentioned problem was the callous attitude of the staff.
I cannot say I was surprised except for the fact Casey Corporate does not seem to care. Do they not have any more concern and respect for the environment and the animals than this? the way I look at it is they built their business which took habitat away from the animals. Now the animals are turning to them for the food and shelter that was taken from them, but they do not seem to care. I know one thing for certain, they will no longer be getting my business unless they open their eyes and start addressing the problem. And this does not mean hauling the cats to the pound to be killed. As long as they are not reproducing, they should be able to live long and happy lives.
