They were calling my home phone everyday, stating only that they were "Tom" and leaving an 800 number. Since they were asking for me by my maiden name I called them back.

The first person I talked to stated that they purchased a Southwestern Bell debt from 1997 in the amount of $335 in my name. At first they wouldn't give me any information except that I owed the money, so I mentioned "lawyer" and hung up.

Scared of what they would do, I called bac. I got someone else, and I heard the previous rep in the background say "don't talk to her she has a lawyer." To which I responded "I don't have a lawyer, but I will be getting one." They asked me a bunch of personal questions which I did not answer, including where I work. Then they transferred me to the dispute department.

I was given a phone number that I NEVER had as the account, but they would not give me the address where the account was opened, only my current address. I have always had Verizon as my phone carrier, and still do.

I was told to mail in 2 forms of identification, plus three bills prior to 1997 showing the address where I lived during that time, or collection would continue. They also said they had been mailing me bills, which I've never received. When I questioned why they needed two forms of identification, and that I had read on the internet not to do this, they got angry, began yelling at me to send in the information or pay the debt, and then hung up on me.

I recently had to fight another company, AFNI, Inc. over a bogus phone bill for a different amount, and it took me 6 months to get this off my credit report. I'm not sure what to do, since I don't feel I should pay a debt that isn't mine but also don't want my credit ruined.

I just filed a complaint with the BBB of Ohio, which seemed to help when I was fighting AFNI.

Apparently, BBB has hundreds of complaints against CBCS, and has tons of different addresses on file for them.

This company buys out of date debts then uses tactics to collect the so called "debt" - Do not pay them a penny
go to www.budhibbs.com and learn about these so called "legitmate" collection agencies
Thanks Tim for your good advice

#1 Consumer Suggestion

This is an easy one

AUTHOR: Tim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 31, 2008

This is a pretty simple case. Just send them a letter by certified mail, with return receipt requested, stating the following three things:

1) The debt is beyond the statute of limitations for judicial collection actions.

2) Reporting the debt to a consumer credit reporting agency, or maintaining such a report, is a violation of the FCRA as the debt is more than seven years old.

3) As you have no legitimate recourse other than to harass me, you are hereby ordered to cease and desist any and all further communications.

Best regards!
