Todd Elliot contacted me via email and informed me that another local business had recommended our restaurant and he offered to give the restaurant where I work a positive write up with a link to the restaurant's website in exchange for free dinner for himself and his family because he was going to be in the area reviewing our local ski resort. He even offered to give our restaurant a positive write up for a breakfast as well.

I informed him that I would have to confirm this with the restaurant owner the next day. I forgot about it because I didn't work the next day and I assumed he would call ahead on the evening in question to confirm before arriving.

On the evening he wanted to dine he showed up to the restaurant, introduced himself and asked me in the dining room if I had confirmed the dinner. I told him I had forgotten about it and apologized and found out from the owner's friend who was in the dining room that the owner was driving back to the restaurant and we would have to wait for her return.

He informed me that his family was in the car and if we weren't going to find out immediately he was going to go home and that if he'd known this was going to happen he would have picked another restaurant.

I apologized again and told him he could wait for the owner. There were other customers in the restaurant and I asked the owner's friend how long she thought it would be before the owner's return.

He was informed it would only be minutes but he insisted that the owner's friend call her and ask her permission. He was then informed that the owner said he could wait for her or come back and review the restaurant another time.

He told me that it was now or never and wanted me to call the owner back but she was driving so I told him no and that I guess the answer was no, so he said that he was going to now give her bad PR. I told him that wasn't fair because the mixup was my fault not hers.

I went into the kitchen to see if the chef would help me get him to leave because he was making a scene in the dining room and being rude to me and the owner's friend. The chef came out to escort him out and he threatened to add him to the bad PR he was going to give the restaurant and asked the chef's name.

The chef gave him his name and told him he didn't care if he wrote anything negative about him. The next morning I received a message that there was a new Yelp review for our restaurant in which he misrepresented everything that happened and gave our restaurant a bad review.

He asserted that we were inattentive when in fact he walked in directly to me and started the conversation and monopolized my attention from the start. His wife and daughter even came in and asked for a cup of water for his daughter which I gave her right away. We were more than accomodating in trying to get an answer for him right away. The fact that he went on to give our restaurant a bad review on Yelp because we couldn't confirm right then and there at the beginning of our dinner rush whether we could feed his family for free or he was going home and never coming back is beyond ridiculous.

This man was extremely rude and demanding when all he had to do was bring his family in, sit down and wait a few minutes for the owner to confirm whether they could dine for free and in fact she did arrive within ten minutes of his leaving. He was also rude to the owner's friend and while he was making this scene the actual dining customers were subject to his drama instead of having a pleasant experience.

He then went to another local restaurant that was in the opposite direction of his home after telling more than once that if he couldn't get the confirmation right then for the free dinner/positive write up exchange he was just going home. I wonder if the other restaurant fed his family for free on the spot or did he have to pay like any other customer.

This whole thing came off as a scam for free food. If he received his family's free dinner and wasn't satisfied would the restaurant have received the positive write up anyway? I don't trust any of the positive reviews of restaurants on his website if they were attained in anyway similar to what I experienced. It seems like he was just looking for a way to provide his family with a day of free skiing and free food.

There was no reason that he couldn't have been polite and understanding, accepted my apology for the mixup and dined at our restaurant at his expense and forego the write up like any of our other satisfied customers. Better yet, he could have waited the ten minutes for the owner who more likely than not would have accepted his proposal even after he was rude and demanding.

Truly setting the record straight

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Saturday, September 24, 2016

I thought I was done responding to this man's nonsense but then he contacted the restaurant I work at and wanted an apology from me and wanted us to remove this report. I'm wondering why he's just now responding to this report almost a year later. He also repeatedly sent me emails after the incident in my restaurant in which he was very insulting. I would just like to remind him that I have all of our communication via email in which he does threaten negative pr. I also have the email in which I tell him I'll get back to him the next day. I have no problem mentioning that I work at Mountain top cafe, my omission of that was never intentional, I knew that HE knew which restaurant he was at. Mr. Elliot just needs to say the word and I can prove that his response here is not the truth.

Set the record straight

I wish Mr. Elliot would just tell the truth here. I'm sure he has had many mutual agreements on free stuff for good pr. I would never trust any of these reviews in his publication that were obtained this way because in essence he's being paid to say something nice. I wonder if he's ever received complimentary food that he didn't like and still wrote a positive review? In any case he keeps repeating the same false representation of the incident with our restaurant. He was NOT confirmed to be "hosted" with his family for dinner and was rude to everyone involved. He also in fact stated that he was just going back home to LA if we couldn't get an answer and instead went in the opposite direction some miles to review another restaurant in our area that I assume fed his family for free in exchange for a positive review. He did in fact promise bad pr in front of several people in which he would mention how rude our chef was for asking him to leave. He then did follow through and left an untrue bad review on yelp. The last thing I have to say on this matter is the fact that he didn't just stay and have dinner with his family with or without a review or wait a few minutes for the owner speaks volumes. We have paying customers every day who give us positive pr and we don't need "help" from some obscure online publication. I'm done responding to his misrepresentation of what happened and just want to spare others the same unpleasant experience we had in our dealings with him. Others should take the reviews in his publication for what most if not all of them appear to be-paid advertisement.

misrepresentation of incident

POSTED: Thursday, September 15, 2016

When I was contacted by this owner via email and agreed to host him for dinner he made it clear that this was contigent on him dining for free. I also asked him for how many people and he said for four people ie. his wife and children.

I then informed him I would have to confirm that with the owner and would get back to him. I forgot about it until he showed up in person and started harrassing me and the owner's friend to call the owner and find out right at that point in time.

Even after calling the owner and being informed that she was on her way back to the restaurant and would let him know when she returned he still wanted us to call her back while she was driving to answer yes or no right then or he was leaving.

When he was told that he would have to wait for her and it shouldn't take long but we wouldn't call her back he threatened bad pr and then the chef came out and told him to leave. He did indeed follow through on giving the restaurant a bad, untrue review on Yelp.

#1 REBUTTAL Owner of company

Incorrect statement from this person

AUTHOR: Todd - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 14, 2016

To set the record straight, our publication has been in business since 1999.  This is the FIRST and ONLY negative review I have ever received personally with our publication.  If anyone wants to check out our publication online for accuracy, please do so as we aim to provide positive publicity and have thousands of past articles and stories to show.  We provide preview and reviews and our goal is to help and provide positive publicity.  We post PR on certain events we don't even cover many times and our reputation speaks for itself.

So this one person, whoever they are, had to make up a story because they were having a bad day or has an ego for messing up is sad to hear and read this mis-representation.  I did reach out to this restaurant to provide some PR on our media travel feature out to this area about a week before.  We cover places if it is a good fit for our publication or if they were suggested.  Sometimes we are compensated or treated and other times not.   By no means do we ever abuse or obligate anyone.  Restaurants can turn us down anytime or set certain parameters as it is their place.

However, this restaurant (The Mountain Top Cafe as this person couldn't even write in the name of their own place so that has to tell you something) invited us to a hosted meal to write about them.  Once again, I have never theatened to post negative PR in my life if a restaurant or owner is not willing to participate in our article.  That is their perogative.  However, this place confirmed us and then changed their mind when we arrived asking us to sit and wait for the owner.  They never told us the owner was coming in 10 minutes or we would have been happy to wait.

They were not professional and we were happy to just have a bite and eat before the chef named Frank was so rude to us, that we felt uncomfortable and decided to leave.  I feel like it was a misunderstanding but by no means should anyone or any place be rude to a customer let alone a writer.     We were trying to help this little mom and pop place so it is unfortunate that some worker (not even the owner) decided to make up a false story and report it here.
