My wife was buying some items at Target and tried to use a check to pay. The cashier handed her a slip of receipt and the check back saying they couldn't take it. I had just recently received a new check order so i was thinking the account or routing number number were incorrect. I verified they were correct and that i had more than enough money in my account to cover the check. The customer service person at my bank told me no check had been refused by them. I ended up calling the Certegy number on the sheet handed to my wife. The automated system stated that they used a risk management process and that flagged my check and that there was NO more information they would tell me. WHAT??? The check was declined based on some process that they won't tell anybody about. Any company using the "Certegy" service is not interested in customer service.

From their website: We understand and apologize for any concern caused by your check not being authorized. Certegy carefully analyzes patterns of check writing activity designed to protect consumers as well as our merchants from fraud, identity theft and unauthorized usage. While the majority of check authorization requests result in approval, there are occasions when a valid check matches these patterns, resulting in a decline. This decline was not a result of any negative check writing information, but as a preventative measure. These situations are rare and should not affect the authorization of your checks in the future. Please be assured, this has been conveyed to the merchant.

#2 Consumer Comment

What was the check number??

"I had just recently received a new check order so i was thinking the account or routing number number were incorrect"

Sometimes as a preventative measure some places may not cash a check that starts with a numbers between 1 and 100 (as an example) because people have been known to open a checking account and then turn around and close it after they get their initial order of checks.

They also could have not cashed it because it was a new account.

Maybe use your debit card for purchases and write checks to pay bills for around 6 months or so until Certegy or other check approval companies will see that this is an account that appears to be one that is reliable.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

I think they were trying to tell you something

This is 2012.  Who the h**l writes checks at Target, of all places?  Get a credit or debit card, and save everyone else in line the aggravation of waiting for 5 minutes while you write the d**n check and it gets processed.
