I have a totally free checking account with CharterOne Bank. I was laid off from my job so couldn't put money in the account. With a balance of $6 to keep my account open they charged me a $30 fee because I was not putting money in.

Then that caused an overdraft and they charged me another $30, and another every 3-4 days. I went to the bank to talk to them and they wouldn't even talk to me. They wouldn't even close my account to stop the growing fees. Now I owe like $250 and it is still growing.

I called their corporate complaint number and they say they can do nothing about that I have to go to the bank where I opened my account. That was the bank that they wouldn't talk to me.

Minimum Balance Required

AUTHOR: RJ - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 12, 2003

Sure sounds like a bank that none of us should be doing business with. Those a pretty stiff penalties for not keeping the minumum balance in the account.

The following is from their site. I'm afraid it's not much help to you.

THE BEST FREE CHECKING

Minimum Opening balance is $50.00. Surcharges may be imposed by other parties if you use ATMs that are not owned by the Bank. Business accounts not eligible. Direct deposit bonus will be credited as interest to your account when the first direct deposit is made to the account, and will be subject to 1099 reporting. First three Overdraft or Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fees waived. Regardless of the fee waiver, the decision to pay or return insufficient item(s) shall be at the sole discretion of Charter One Bank. Returned check fees may be imposed by third parties. The Best FREE Checking account is a non-interest bearing account (0.00% Annual Percentage Yield). The Best FREE Checking account offer is good for new checking accounts only and is not available for customers who already have a personal checking account with Charter One Bank. See the Account Rules and Regulations brochure for complete disclosures about the account and on non-sufficient funds.
