I work on computers as a side job and I accept cash as well as checks. I have an account with Bank of America which is a completely different story; they pissed me off. Long story made short, I had  a check that a customer wrote off of Chase Bank that I needed to get cashed today. I saw a Chase bank so I stopped.

Most banks let you cash a check written off of that bank AT NO CHARGE but not Chase! It was a $60 and they charged me $6.00 to cash the d**n thing! WTF??? Are they so hard up for money that now they operate like a d**n check cashin place??? It was their check!!! I considered switching to them but to h*ll with that....

You can file a complaint about the bank

AUTHOR: kukulimoku - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, October 19, 2009

I have encountered a same issue with Chase. They allowed unauthorized charges to be processsed even after I have reported with them. They then collected mutliple transaction fees and overdraft fees. I contacted the claim department multiple times and was told that they will not proceed an investigation of these charges because I have dealed with the merchant once before. I tried to explain to them that I have not authorized any further charges since september. They now refuse to talk to me via email or telephone.

I filed a complaint of Chase with the Comptroller of the Currency Administrator of National Banks. I urge all of you who have issues with Chase or any bank to file complaint to this agency. Hopefully with enough complaint, they can proceed some actions to stop these criminal acts.

Just got off the phone with Chase

Ok, SO I am pulling my money from chase. I wrote a check at 6pm last thursday. My payroll kicks in at midnight. Apparantly the vendor went to their bank, deposited the check. That check is the first to show up before anything else. There were ATM purchase that were made a day before that showed up after. So anyway, because the check was posted first, we overdrafted. How in the hell can a check be deposited AFTER the days close at 6pm and clear BEFORE the next day. So I argue my point and get the standard writted, canned responses. I told them, My mom works for a bank. I know for a fact they are putting bigger charges like that through FIRST so you intentionally overdraft. I think a class action lawsuit should be started. The government should have let these banks fail.

Oh great, now they are re-sequencing sneezing fees?

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Thank you edgeman for letting us know about this. We had better sneeze into our registers so they actually serve a useful purpose..and this way if they manipulate the time of legitimate sneezes in order to maximize sneezing fees that did have snot at the time of said sneeze..we can show them the boogered up register.

And then we can present the snot registers at the hearings..and show them how the online statement has re-sequenced the time of sneezes for the sole purpose of maximizing sneezing fees..it could work to our advantage.

And yes Edgeman..you can join the class action lawsuits..but bring plenty of Sudafed...it is going to be a regular sneeze fest.

Luckily due to all the complaints...congress is even getting into the game, and some banks have even voluntarily decided to stop re-sequencing sneezes..and to stop forcing over sneeze "protection" onto every one of their customers..imagine that?

the truth is, that it is not illegal any more.  A lot of banks charge a fee to cash a check drawn off of them.  Take it to your bank to cash, oh wait, they "screwed" you too.  I guess the banking industry is out to get you.

Two Fold Reasoning

AUTHOR: JMY - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, October 09, 2009

Misty,

First I think it's great you were able to find an institution to cash your check free of charge!  Wish I had a place in my area.

As far as the bank's decision to charge check cashing fees, it goes two fold for them. While inquiring about these fees myself (as my bank who I don't want to mention just raised from $5 to $10), I got two different answers both justifiable in my opinion.

The first and most obvious reason was to encourage non customers to start banking where they cash their checks - makes total sense.  So if a regular employee of a local business is constantly getting a check drawn on a bank different than his own (used to be my case), why not bank where work banks to save these costs?  While the fees may be a little high, the reason is understandable.  Expand to new customers.

The second reason which I never thought of until a supervisor mentioned it one afternoon is that it helps prevent fraudulent cashing and losses to the bank.  They didn't have my information, records of who I am, or any way to track me.  If I brought a fake check into the bank with fake ID that was good enough to pass at the bank, that cash can never be recovered once it leaves their hands.  So again, the fee is a deterrent for non customers to open accounts and "establish a banking relationship"  (which means being able to track and view your normal activity).

All in all, is the idea of having check cashing fees reasonable? Absolutely.  But the amount of those fees?  Well thats a whole different story...Although this won't ease the pain to your wallet I hope it may have at least eased the idea for you as it did for me in the past.

Good luck Misty.

That's true...

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

Misty wrote: "Our account is with B of A who will charge you a fee if you sneeze!"

You know those little counters that banks provide so you have a space to fill out deposit and withdrawal slips? Well I was standing at one of those counters at Bank of America and I sneezed. Before I could blow my nose on this old lady's sweater, this little gnome pops out from under the counter and says that there is a $20 fee for sneezing at the bank.

Fair enough, I did sneeze in the bank and wouldn't have had a problem paying the fee but do you know what they did? They resequenced that sneeze so that it was listed before the sneeze I did earlier in the parking lot. Can you believe that they actually had video of me sneezing in the parking lot?

Their little sneeze resequencing scam meant that I had to pay two sneezing fees instead of just one. I asked how they could possibly charge me two sneezing fees and wouldn't you know it - the gnome pulled out the terms and conditions and showed me where it said that they could do that. Does the bank really expect me to read the terms and conditions when iCarly is coming on soon?

Jerks. Count me in on a class action lawsuit.

The cost of doing business

AUTHOR: Misty - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 05, 2009

Yeah, I think what I will do in the future is either not accept a personal check or charge the customer a $10 "processing fee" for writing a personal check. It's terrible that people like myself have to do this but we aren't left much choice! I do computer repair jobs to make a little extra money for my family and yes, I did need the money.

The other point about the fee's I would incur if the check bounced are also very valid. Our account is with B of A who will charge you a fee if you sneeze!

Thanks for reporting..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, October 03, 2009

wow..they charged you 10% for cashing one of their own checks. This may be a new one as for my entire life since old enough to bank..I always cashed checks at the bank they are issued from if possible..and never heard of this fee before. I guess you could consider this a ripoff as it certainly qualifies as "being charged too much unjustly" in my humble opinion.

You might have been better off just depositing it in your bank..but since some banks take a year and a month to clear it..who knows..maybe you needed the money now.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Yup!

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, October 03, 2009

Yup!  That's how it works nowadays.

I'm old enough to remember when it was forbidden for an FDIC insured bank to charge a fee for cashing a check written against the bank-those days are gone.  The rules have been changed.

I too, have 2 small businesses.  Your recourse is:

1.  Don't accept personal checks.

2.  Pass the "check cashing fee" on to your customers.

3.  Deposit the personal check into YOUR business bank account.  Of course, if you do this, you risk a returned check fee if the check bounces as well as waiting for the "hold" to be released and the funds ACTUALLY transfered into your account.  I have a $40 returned check fee for any check that is returned to me unpaid for ANY reason.

4. Start accepting credit cards.

5. Demand cash only.
