In any Auto repair place you should get what you agreed upon. How ever you have to remember you get what you paid for. Econ lube pays dirt for unskilled labor and that is the kind of service you get.

Good for you being an A&P mechanic it is comparing apples to Oranges. The Automobile is very easy how ever the kid that changed you oil got paid .2-.3 hours to do this oil change. At Lexus the labor is .5 hr Audi .5-1 hr VW is .4-1hr The 18.95 is to get you into the door for up sales brakes, filters, tires, ect. that is where the real money is made.

I specialize in the cars CAN system I get paid very good for an Auto tech. But the hours are low with the hard diagnosis I make up for it in the repairs and up sales of things they need. The thing that gets me is every one calling dealers STEALERSHIPS I only do what the car needs. But If you establish a working relationship with any shop you will find it is beneficial to both parties.

You have a right to be upset about them not using your Bosch filter .
If they did not install the filter you requested how do you know they used the mobile -1 oil.
For them not using the right filter , In my opinion you should get you money back .and your filter and mobile -1 oil.

Now the $20 labor is another story if they had used  the right filter . There oil change price is set using oil and filters purchased in bulk . The oil would be pumped from a holding tank to you car, the extra time filling you car with oil that you supplied  to them justified the extra labor.

I know that time may sound a bit trivial , but we all know time is money.


Now as far as ripping what the auto industry charges per hour interrelationship to the Air travel  industry, that's compering apples and oranges.

Also if you knew so much about it and is was so easy, why not take the mere 15mins out of your oh so busy day to change the oil yourself. I mean you already spent $40 and time at the parts house .why ? Because you wanted the chaise lubed, and the fluids topped off ,and the tires checked and you did not want to get your hands dirty that's why. thus $20

  
 




   

To Flynrider: maybe you don't know that if you go to a steakhouse you can pick which piece of steak you want. for the same reason, in case the shop only carries s**+tty oil which goes for 2.00 a bottle, degrade immediately after pouring in (please read the car bible and research if you have no clue about mineral oil and synthetic oil, also, ask a friend who knows about chemistry. without all the industrial advance you'd have sill used the clay pot to cook. so, if you want to settle down with good cookware, why let your car suck with cheap oil when you can put on really good oil?)

and i didn't ask them to do anything but the oil change, i just say that if i do it myself, i'd fill the filter with oil - for extra care.

to Tree L: you're asking too much for your investment. auto mechanic goes to college for 2 years, and what's the responsibility? i don't know which dealer you go to, but let me tell you, aviation mechanic (A&P) works in more extreme condition, and yet airplane shop doesn't charge 200/hr. and the responsibility is much heavier for aviation mechanic.

because of people like you, there are always whining cr@p - go for higher education, get a better job if you're not an lazy@$$ that can't study anything but a cr@ppy job. you put $30,000 in the bank and expect they give you platinum card?

and you didn't even see the shop, it was much better than working on a ramp preparing for an aircraft to departure, and yet everyone complains why it take so long to get the aircraft ready, and the ticket price is too high. American like you screw this country up!

and yes, i'm a A&P mechanic, with BS in maintenance management, and am going for my master in aeronautical science. how much do you think Boeing is paying people, so that a car dealer can charge $200/4 = $50 oil change (15minutes)?

FYI, the place has oil change for $18.99 including 5 quarts of oil, and filter. now do i sound reasonable yet? please someone fixes me up since my head is so stupid i can't think of a reason why any of this is my fault!

How can the shop owner pay mechanic, cashier, rent, utility, tools, tax,  ...... with your $20.   Auto mechanic work is hard.   Working enviroment is always bad (very hot, very cold, around harmful chemical, dirty, ......)

Because of you, machanic won't have extra cash in saving, mechanic's kids won't go to college, no health care insurrance, no vacation, no break time, no ......

$80/hr labor rate is low.  In my area (SF area, California), average labor rate at dealer is $200/hr.

   When you go to a restaurant, do you bring your own raw meat and veggies for them to cook?

   Frankly, if I was the manager of this business, I would have told you to take a hike when you walked in with your own oil and filter.

  BTW - real mechanics would chuckle at the thought of filling a new oil filter before installing it.  

seriously, i don't know how much you're making, how high your salary is but you don't know anything about oil change and the price. how long for an oil change, did you ask yourself? it was 10-15 minutes for me waiting to have my car back, and at the price of $20, it's at least $80 per hour. and what does the mechanic do? he twist off the oil drain plug, let it drain, twist off the filter, get the new filter in, plug the drain back, put oil in.

let me tell you this, he doesn't even put oil in the filter, so your engine will run for several seconds without oil.

basically, based on your respond, i'd say you don't have any knowledge about car maintenance. having said that, if i didn't live in the condo complex near the place, i'd not take my car to anywhere but having the oil change myself. remember, autozone takes your oil back, and you can recycle your oil for free (in Seattle, 2 gallons in 1-gallon jug per week).

so, if you're working for a huge company paying you $100 an hour, you're not spending time reading these complains. otherwise, you are either the owner of this sh~tty service or some cr@ckhead who can't grow up because your knowledge is so limited.

so, you can take your reasoning of paying all your cash to someone without knowing that your time can used to save yourself, your family some extra cash, your kids' college saving or whatever it is. but, because of people like you, the economy can go back up since you spend. i don't, so, sorry, i am the trouble :) you are the solution.

Customers like you are a waste of time and money. You want the best service, and the cheapest price, but have no loyalty. You want top notch/honorable people to service your car at scum bag "take you for everything your worth mechanic" prices.

Here's a lesson for you, you get what you pay for. Find a mechanic who's trustworthy and has reasonable prices, and always go to them. Prices may be higher here or there, but they will take care of you in the end (ie will not have to lie to you about something needing replacement to make a profit from your penny pinching a**)
