There was a time when Circle K cared about its employees. Sadly, with the new multi-million dollar merger, Circle K, a division of the Tosco corporation, is now owned by global oil industry giant Phillips 66.

Phillips 66, in an effort to reduce employee injury claims, soon introduced weird 'safety' policies, which, while on the surface may appear to back up their claims that they care for their employees, actually only help to cover the corporation's financial assets in case an employee is injured on the job.

Take, for example, Phillips' policy concerning back belts: Employees must wear the back belts while doing ANY lifting, cleaning, or stocking. Although the medical profession continues to publish articles which say backbelts do more harm than good.

When Phillips representatives were confronted with this information at a regional 'safety' meeting, they had 'no comment'.

Another example is the poor employee who was injured on the job (while taking out the trash), had his medical claim denied, and was fired, when he was bitten by a dog in the parking lot. The reason? He wasn't wearing his orange safety vest at the time, and thus was "not working in a safe manner". As if the orange safety vest would have protected from a dog bite!

Another employee fell over a box full of cartons of cigarettes. Her medical claim was denied because she had several boxes spread out on the floor, trying to stock them. Phillips' new 'safety' policy is that only one box can be stocked at a time, and all boxes must be left in a single stack. Impossible, since Phillips also has a policy that states all cigarettes must be counted and checked in *before* being stocked on the shelf. An employee must truly be talented indeed, to check in every carton of cigarettes without moving a single box!

That employee's medical injury claim was denied, and she was also fired.

Let's not forget that each day, before work, the employees must sign not one, but TWO waivers, stating that they understand the penalty for not wearing backbelts (while cleaning, lifting, or stocking), reflective orange safety vests (when going outside during daylight or nighttime hours) , protective goggles (when using any harmful cleaning agents), face masks, helmets (while changing signs), rubber gloves (while handling toxic materials), leather gloves (while taking out the trash), and cooler jacket (when stocking the cooler) can and will result in termination of the employee.

In addition to the two waivers, there is a third, monthly waiver (deceptively called an 'employee safety newsletter'), which the employee must sign and date, indicating that s/he has read and understood it), and occasional weekly 'safety' documents, which also must be signed and dated.

Few if any of Phillips' new 'safety' policies are practical: for example, Wearing leather gloves while taking out the trash may seem like a good safety policy. Of course, it's nearly impossible to TIE a garbage bag shut when wearing leather gloves, and twist ties are not provided by the company. It's fine to sit in a board room and make these sorts of policies, but in the real world, it doesn't work.

Which is what Phillips is banking on. See, their convenience stores are all equipped with survaillance cameras. If any employee is injured on the job, all the suits have to do is look through the old survaillance videos until they find any violation of corporation 'safety'. Then the employee's medical claim is denied, and the worker is terminated.

Saftey vs injury and termination

You are 100 percent correct on the Saftey issues.
One of Chandlers best and reliable 3rd shift people was injured with a dis-located retna during a beer run.
She was fired while on medical leave because the Market Manager said it did not happen ! The employee had a Police report and an eye witness.

The MM claimed she reviewed the tape, and did not see it. Chandler Police have the video, so MM could not have seen it. Now the injured employee is stuck paying medical bills,lost her place to live and was forced to move in with her daughter in a one bedroom apt. The ex employee does not have the money to seek legal counsel.
Circle K does it again ! They achieved their goal of no recordable injuries !!

When it comes to circle k, all of us employees have noticed way too many flaws in their safety policies. Corporate is only concerned with the bottom line$$$$, the only reason they choose to push employees around in the state of arizona at least is because their are not enough laws to protect employees adaquately.

So naturally they have found away to take advantage of their employees yet again. In regards to the safety dolly "Hapi", not only does this mock the employee, humiliate the employee, and provide no other source of attention to the customers, and others. Most mgr's are only concered about their bonuses, and on a memo i have read recently, can be cut, or even eliminated for a certain time period, if an employee has a lost time recordable. So basically if an employee for this company is injured on the job, in an accident, that was unavoidable to resonable extremes. Everyone becomes penalized, and the employee terminated in most cases.

This type of behavior should never be acceptable from any coroporation, who boasts about their concerns for their employees.

Update ..The company has added insult to injury

At the last so-called 'safety meeting', the suits of the company declared that all dairy merchandise must be pushed out on dollies, and that any employee caught using an unsafe method, pulling the dolly, could be terminated because of 'unsafe working practices'.

The company has added insult to injury by adding a 'safety mannequin' ( a dolly with pointy 'arms' and a light-up head) to every Circle K store in Arizona. This mannequin is awkward, and must be pulled outside whenever the employee is working outdoors. Because the handle on the mannequin faces the wrong way, it must be pulled out, in direct violation of their above statement. The employee can be fired either way now.

Unfortunately i am not going to be able to release any information as to the site i work at, or release names of other employees, for obvious reasons. In the state of arizona circle k, current parent company conoco/phillips, presents low wages, and promises that they never had any intent on fulfilling.

Over the past 3 years that i have been employed by this company, i have noticed several immoral business practices, and disgraceful attitutdes by corporate officials.

To start with a pay card system or direct deposit, that employees had no choice but to sign up for, or risk not receiving pay. The cancellation of a meager 10% discount which is common throughout most companies, in exchange for a $15 turkey at the end of the year. The notion of wanting to terminate, and attempting to do so of an employee, who had received surgery for a heart condition, simply because she could miss a certain time period of work. I perish the thought as to what would happen to myself, if i had become ill.

And onto safety policies, all of which were described in this report were very accurate. Except a couple of items were not mentioned, that would make it seem even more insane. When carrying any object over 10lbs!!!, the employee is required to wear a backbelt.

When working outside the employee is required to bring the "HAPI" safety dolly, which consist of a bright orange pole, connected to 2 wheels, a flashing safety vest, a flashing yellow light for a head, and 2 flourescent flags for arms. This measure is being used to supposedly stop vehicles from striking employees. As if the bright flashing vest the employee has to wear is not enough. Also not mentioned was the fact that employees are not allowed outside the store at all during nighttime hours, thats right not even past the front doors, so if an emergency should happen requiring the employee to step outside, that employee would be terminated on the spot.

Now onto the fact that conoco/phillips has decided to dump most of its circle k properties to focus on refining, and exploration. This has happend many times in the past with circle k, but a little advance notice from coroporate might have been appreciated.
