These people are truly unbelievable. They lie to you when they sell you the warranty. Then don't live up to the warranty they do provide. Here's my tale of woe with regard to Circuit City.

In August 2002 I bought a Compaq Presario 730US laptop from the Circuit City store in Kennewick, Washington. It was a pretty nice little laptop and I figured my college bound daughter would put it to good use. Well after the hard sell from the saleskid we purchased the warranty since he said it covered everything even the LCD screen which the manufacturer wouldn't cover and that if it had to be repaired 3 times they would replace it with a new one. Hey, how could you go wrong, worry free for two years, right?

Wrong! She didn't have that thing two months at school and already it was overheating, crashing, USB devices wouldn't work and the DVD-ROM wouldn't read any type of disk. Well she sent it in and they sent it back and it worked for about a month and the same things started happening. So at her next school break she sent it in again.

Same problems. They sent it back and it would work for a couple weeks then the same story. Finally I got involved and had it sent back and told them to fix the d**n thing like the warranty stated they would. They kept it a few days longer that time. They replaced the MO, which they said was defective.

Got it back. Worked for a few weeks then started overheating and crashing and the DVD-ROM wouldn't work. Called up to bi**h about it and they said they didn't find anything wrong with the DVD-ROM. Well then why doesn't it work? They didn't know and said to send it back.

I told them I was getting real tired of shipping this thing back and forth and them not fixing the problems it had. The tech gave me a song and dance about how he would personally track it's repair. Ha! what a joke. Sent it back and they didn't do sh** to it. They just sent it back. It didn't work any better than when I sent it.

Finally, so my daughter could at least use the stupid thing I bought her an external CD-RW which would work occasionally if it wasn't in overheat mode after running a coule of hours. So I then got her one of those aluminum stands with the fans in it to help keep it cool to get her by until we could send it in again. It seemed to help a little although it would still hang up after a couple of hours of run time and the DVD-ROM never did work. A partial list of just MY issue numbers regarding the DVD-ROM drive follows, lest any of the bozos at Circuit City think I'm exaggerating they can look them up.

Issue # 4517331, and the tech was #4667
Issue # 4581458, and the tech was #4718
Issue # 4603676, and the tech was #4142
Issue # 4603676, and the tech was #4612
Issue # 4653179, and the tech was #4750
Issue # 4735454, and the tech was #4722

My daughter made her own list of calls and attempts to get this POS fixed. We finally gave up in March of 2004 and resolved to get rid of this junker at the first opportunity.

Well after returning home for Christmas recently we went to Circuit City this Monday to check out their new ads for a Toshiba laptop that looked pretty good. So we went to the store in Kennewick, Wa. and asked if they had it, and sure enough they had 9 in stock. I then asked if we could see one. Get this - The punk told us they did have one on display because they needed to sell the displays before putting out the new models. So I asked him if we could see one before we purchased it but he wouldn't let us see one because they don't want to open the box! and that he had a very similar one on display.

Well the "display model" was a $2400 high end Toshiba and I was looking at buying the $849 one that was in the ad. So I asked him again if we could see if before we bought it and he said no and that they had all the information on the computer on line so customers can see what they are buying!! I asked him if he was serious. he was.

We turned around and walked out right then and there and will never set foot in that store or any other Circuit City store for that matter, again. We went over to Best Buy and bought a Toshiba S-161 instead. Circuit City, you just lost a customer for life.

Sorry they could only confirm me returning it 3 times and there were 8 case numbers, not 6. I only had records on 6 case numbers... They also complained that had this been an important issue for me I would have contacted them after my last attempt at getting it resolved back in March... How arrogant can you get? Are not 3 returns and 8 case numbers sufficient to resolve a simple DVD-ROM repair?

Finally got to talk to a supervisor... of couse the bottom line is there is nothing they can do about it. Big surprise. They suggested that I contact their "resolution team". Of couse they don't have a telephone number for them... all you can do it FAX or mail them your issue and they will get back to you... I had talked to one of their so called resolution people in the past and got nowhere with them. Same old song and dance, send it back for repair... but I already knew what kind of response I'd get based on all the other times I'd sent it back. They just kept telling me there is nothing wrong with it, but when I'd get it, it wouldn't read ANY CD's or DVDs. It's now out of warranty and yes they succeeded in wearing me down to the point where I had given up on getting it fixed. I'm perfectly capable of doing that myself. My issue is with the fact that I can't even open it now because they Superglued it back together. I've had problems with products in the past and have always been able to reach a resolution but these people take the cake. If you are contemplating buying this so called warranty, read this, then I'd suggest you think twice about what you are getting for your money...

I figured I'd call one last time to find out what possessed them to Superglue the thing back together. I'm on hold to speak to a supervisor as I write... the tech I initially talked to said this is a common practice to prevent the consumer from opening the computer up. It was like, so what's the big deal... Well for me it's that I can open this thing up and finally do what they were supposed to do under the extended warranty. Fix it. As for them not wanting me to open it, gee.. the last time I looked at the receipt, I was the owner. Interesting logic, to say the least. Of course there will be no resolution to this but I just wanted others to know of my experiences and my intention to never buy anything from a Circuit City store, period. Should I ever hear anything from them I'll be the first to let you all know.

OK, and get this...

Since this notebook was now out of warranty I figured I'd put my skills at computer repair to good use. I'd done a lot of research on this notebook, needless to say. So I got all the info regarding disassembly so I could repair it myself. Well the first step in disassembly is to remove the LED and button bar cover just above the keyboard. Pretty simple, a couple of screws and you just pop off the LED cover. You aren't going to believe this but sometime during its multiple repair attempts by City Advantage they obviously broke something with regard to this LED cover attachment. And can you believe these clowns Superglued the cover back on! Needless to say, it can now no longer be removed without breaking the LED cover to get it off. I guess this pretty much sums up their repair efforts. Do as little as possible until the customer gives up trying, since they have no recourse except RipOff Reports.com

Oh, and get this. Since it was now out of warranty I figured I'd just fix it myself since I do a lot of computer work anyway. I started the first step to disassemble the Presario 730US, which is remove the LED and button bar at the top of the keyboard. Come to find out that sometime during it's multiple previous repairs, they had apparently broken something with regard to attaching the LED bar cover and they Superglued it back on!!! Can you believe these idiots. Of course it won't come off now and I'll no doubt have to break it to get it off.
