Just came back from the store after a suspicious offer from the sales person (who was only interested in listening to Rap music full volume inside "his" store). He suggested me to buy the "Vista Recovery CD" at $90 just in case my new system (Vista Home Premium) fails to initialize.

He told me that ONLY Circuit City could create the Recovery CD and I had to leave the new item one day in the store for such "service". In his words: "We have the STUFF to do it" and you don't.

How can someone be so abnoctious when trying to rip you off $1,200 plus other additional extra lies. Criminals!!!! Thanks God I left the store - that loud music was driving me crazy!

Horrible Sales Person

SO as a firedog technician I feel its my job to try and save some reputation here.

The service he was offering you was not just a recovery disk, it was more than likely a full new PC setup including optimization and customization.

Unfortunately new PCs no longer come with recovery discs but do come with a utility to create them, on some computers it is almost impossible to find this utility. So we have the firedog technicians there to make your life easier. and typically this procedure takes 3 hours to do everything, but they tell you a day incase they run into complications.

It sounds to me as if you had a lazy sales associate who'd rather just try and close the sale quick then give you the full explanation of what was going on. I'd go and talk to the store director if i were you :)

#2 Consumer Comment

Dan...you are partially correct.

A lot of systems do NOT have a system recovery CD anymore. The consumer is responsible to make their own recovery disks. I have recently purchased two H P laptops. In both cases, they were higher end machines. But on both systems I had to burn a set of recovery disks. There is a utility placed on the computer for you to do this. It will only allow you to burn one copy of the recovery disks (although you could copy the disks after you make them.) It required three DVD's (optional 15 CD's) and it took a couple of hours to go through the procedure.

Looking at it from the point of the manufacturer, this method is cheaper for them. You will also notice that you don't get manuals anymore. Documentation is usually on a CD.

It is possible that Circuit City provides a service to make the recovery disks. But even so, the way the OP was presented the situation was completely wrong.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

VISTA Recovery CD

That's strange. I've only purchased two laptops at different times, but both times the recoverey CD was included with the laptop. Sounds like the salesperson is trying to make you pay for an item that is part of the package.

I hope you didn't buy the laptop without check this further.

I wonder if the sales person is on commission and the salary is based upon total $ sales and not an hourly wage. That would give them an incentive to charge the maximum price for minimum, low-end equipment.

"Only Circuit City can create a recovery CD." Circuit City cannot create a recovery CD without violating copyright law. It sounds like Circuit City removed the recovery CD from the laptop package and priced it as an add-on.
