I waited outside a store yesterday morning in line with about 20 other people, all waiting to buy a Wii. It was -15 at 10am; it gets like that in Minnesota. For the uninitiated, the Nintendo Wii is being short supplied, driving up demand and price, with high speculative prices on eBay and craigslist. It's the new hot commodity, better return than oil.

At 10 am the doors open. First thing the store employee says, "Unless you were here at 9am waiting when we gave out coupons to buy Wii units, they are all sold out."

What??? Long lines are a common occurrence around every hot item, particularly during Black Friday shopping. But a voucher???

I objected. Strenuously. Nothing in the Sunday morning ad mentioned "vouchers". I was told that the store had always done this. Really. Outside the fact that I was second in line with two expectant kids beside me and with a frozen brain, the attitude struck me as arrogant. Go figure.

Ok, why shouldn't any retailer do this?

1. Leaving customers standing in the cold who expect the game to be played by the rules isn't smart. The store employee knew exactly what was going on. He could have put a sign in the window. If they opened the doors at 9am, they could have opened the doors at 9:45am and told people. Nobody did.

2. So we still don't know how many units were in the store. Another person in line said that he had been at another branch store a few days ago that said they had 10 (which they couldn't sell until the sale day). So where did the units go? Were that many people actually standing in line more than an hour before store opening in that temperature? And why when we pulled up at 9:30 was nobody else in line yet? Just one answer - somebody got preferential treatment, a head start. Somebody got a chance to buy units for $250 that they could sell for $400 almost anywhere on the internet. Not a bad day's profit.

3. After this announcement almost nobody entered the store (where were all the people with vouchers?). So much for the promotion. I had to explain to the kids what happened. I used the term "cheating". Cheating is something a first grader can understand. I'm already scouring the internet for opportunities to bring this to light, to say nothing of all the people I've begun to tell. What do you suppose those other people who stomped off cold and mad are doing?

4. We are a techno-geek family. We spend a lot of money on gadgets. My first laptop I bought from this same store. Not any more.

Think I'm just another crazy customer? Not when I'm done with this. I have small business and marketing contacts all of the US. I'm no where near done with this issue.

Why Bash us??

AUTHOR: Cc - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, August 14, 2008

To make thing more clear for everyone. Nintendo Wii at every Circuit City has been with vouchers. Why you did not see anyone in line is because the vouchers were handed out when there were enough people in line. We don't like to see people stand outside that long if they don't have to be. We tell them to go get a cup of coffee and breakfast. Why you did not see anyone with vouchers in the store is because they have until 12pm to pickup there system. If they don't return by 12pm they the next customer who asks for one gets it!!

Everyone likes to bash Circuit City without all the right facts. They get really get mad when it says NO RAIN CHECKS!! I've been with this company for 10 years and i've heard some crazy things. Yes, The company did layoff alot of great workers. But some of us are still around!!! We still have great knowledge about everything in the store. Just look for the black Shirts thats Supervisors and managers. We will go out of our way to help you. Even when were on break!! Yes it's happen. We just don't like it when we try to help you out but you don't listen to what we have to offer you. You just yell at the top of your lungs because Something is not in stock!!! Lets turn this around What if I came into your job and yelled at you in front of your boss. You probally won't like it at all either. Just treat us like humans thats all I ask!!!

Thank you for your time to read this!!

People do line up at 5AM for Wiis

AUTHOR: Joey C - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Although I can see I am very late in responding to this article. I actually work at the Woodbury Circuit City store and so I am responding to this even though it was posted quite a while ago. In response to the original complaint, at the date of your posting people were lining up at 5AM-6AM to ensure that they were able to get a Wii and most of those times we did hand out vouchers at 8AM-9AM. I will however agree with you that a sign should have been put up in the window to alert people that we were out of Wiis.

Usually what would happen is we would hand out Vouchers and people would go back to their cars to stay warm or go eat until the store opened. Then more people would show up, there would be no line and so those new people would think they were the first ones there and a new line would form. The problem with your specific experience was that unfortunately, the manager just forgot to put a sign up to let people know they were all gone. He then likely got wrapped up on a phone call or some other business which often happens in the early morning hours before the store opens. Please do not let this give you a bad outlook on our store. I don't know exactly how all the other Circuit City's run so I cannot speak on them. But, we try very hard at our store to make sure the customer gets what they want and are treated fairly. Believe me, we get yelled at to no end by management if a customer isn't happy or if we do something to make the customer's experience a bad one.

No They Don't

AUTHOR: Gypsyl - (U.S.A.)

As a matter of fact, not all retailers have worked this way and no, the ad did not state this.

Since I filed this report, we heard through the grapevine (which is how this all usually has happened) that Best Buy was expecting a shipment on a particular day. We checked it out on a whim in mid morning...no Wii. I asked a salesperson. He told me that a truck was expected in around 5:30 that night, but there were no guarantees of any units. I went back about that time and sure enough, they had 30 units come in on the truck. They brought out 5 units at a time to the people who were waiting (why that was the magic number I dont know but there it is).

I bought #20.

There were no coupons. No misleading ads. If you were there waiting in line at the right time you got a unit, which is all we ever wanted.

Keep in mind that I am NOT a Best Buy fan but this time they did something the right way. Since the original post I have bought a 32" screen tv (at Target because it was the best price). I did NOT go back to Circuit City and I never will. THAT is my point.

They all work the same way....

AUTHOR: Qwerty777 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Last Christmas, my boyfriend decided he needed a Wii, so we found out the Target by my house was getting some so we planned on waiting all night. We got there at 10pm the night BEFORE and we second in line. We camped out all night two weeks before Christmas, and by 6am, there were at least 30 people in line. The store opened at 9, and at 8, they came out to hand out tickets. Yes we got tickets an hour before the store opened. They did not "effectively sell" us anything, becuase we still had to wait until the store opened and make our way to electronics and pay for the darn thing. There were many angry people there, because they only got in 27 units, and people showed up at 9 expecting to get one.

And I highly doubt they handed out more than one to any one person, becuase if there were that many people at 10, i guarantee there were more at 9, and no one is going to allow someone in front of them more than one ticket. And at least when we got ours, we were allowed an hour to buy it before they put it on the shelf for someone else to buy. We also had an hour to kill before the store opened to pick it up. In our case, most people hung around and walked around the mall. But there is a good chance that people went home or went to get something to eat before they went back. And knowing the Wii is such a hot item, you should have known that they have very limited quantities. Very rarely do any stores get more than 20 at a time, and I'm willing to bet that somewhere on that add it stated, very plainly, that quantities were limited.

Circuit City Cheating Vouchers

AUTHOR: Gypsyl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 21, 2008

Going to get a Wii was a last minute thought, not a high priority on a Sunday morning, and just a response to an ad which clearly stated limit one per family and that is ALL it said. I have waited in lines at other retailers before, last time was Home Depot. And if I show up too late, such is life because I know that is how the game is played. But I never saw a retailer effectively sell a commodity ahead of store opening before. I thought I was clear that was the real beef.

As a matter of fact, I've done some web surfing around today and discovered posts where people brag about wangling more than one unit, talking store employees into giving them vouchers and not somebody else and not giving out all the vouchers in their possession. We had quite a conversation in that line for 20 min. Not one person in that line had any idea that you could show up early and effectively buy a unit.

Anytime a retailer allows a sale item to be sold outside of normal retail hours gives preferential treatment. There is no way around this. And some consumers are going to take exception to that treatment, especially when store personnel cultivate an arrogant attitude about it.

If I decide a Wii is worth the price I see all over the net, I'll buy it. I can afford it. But I won't engage in combative, misleading shopping. There are too many other retailers around.

Next time you know

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Okay you know that the Wii "It's the new hot commodity, better return than oil." but you still decided to get there at 9:30am and were first in line. Apparently this was the first time you ever tried to shop for the Wii or you would have thought this was very strange in itself.

You stated "After this announcement almost nobody entered the store (where were all the people with vouchers?)." Well to answer your question the people with the vouchers were part of the "almost" in the almost nobody who entered the store.

You are more upset about not getting a Wii than them not informing you before 10am. Even if they did have a sign or came out you would have still been upset. Because you still would have felt that other people got "preferential treatment". Although the only reason they got the vouchers was because they were in line several hours before the store opened. Yes, there are people who got there at 5am in the morning to be sure they got one. If you were not in line by about 8am it probably would have been too late.

So just some advise for the next time you go shopping for a Wii at any store. Get there at least a couple hours early. Do not think that getting in line 30 minutes before a store opens is going to get you a Wii.
