I was a tenant where I paid a deposit of $3,800 to my landlord who refunded this deposit when I moved out. The landlord knew me as Kathy as this is the name I use most of the time for friendly relationship and others know me as Kathleen for more professional relationships.

My landlord banked at CitiBank where I do not have an account. I do have accounts at Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Once I received the check I took it to the Oakland/Federal - Fort Lauderdal location (3101 N Federal Hwyl, Suite 100, Fort Lauderdal, FL  33305) to simply cash it. I was prepared to pay a fee but I was absolutely not prepared for what happened. They refused to cash their customers check!

This is how it went down... I presented the check to the teller (Angela) and simply said I would like to cash this. She asked for my debt card and I said I don't have an account, your customer does. She said "in this case I will need the following:

1. Social Security Number

2. My Occupation

3. My ID

Now I thought this was very unusual... And somewhat of an invasion of privacy. I don't give my social security out to anyone and I report any money that I make, however I was willing to do it as I had nothing to hide. Now for the discrimination and aboslutely failed customer service (does CitiBank want more customers?).

My landlord knows me by Kathy, my driver's license knows me by Kathleen. The teller said she needed to get her supervisors approval. I waited and waited and finally walked into the supervisors office (how difficult could this really be?). I walked in and simply said "I can make this easy, here are two credit cards with Kathy and two credit cards with Kathleen, I also had a drivers license and my passport with me. I was told to leave the office immediately, "Anglea needed to speak to the VP confidentially..." I was waived out of the office to wait outside.  Discrimination: What took 3 minutes to discuss and why was it so confidential?

The teller walked out with a smirk on her face and said, "Like I said, we can't cash it". I immediately went into Marlelena Diaz's office only to have her say the same thing. I layed two credit cards down with Kathy, two with Kathleen and my drivers license. She told me my only recourse was to have my landlord issue a new check in the right name. I told her "to forget that, I was not going to inconvience their customer; I would simply deposit the check with Chase and they could get my money for me "and they did!

I immediately went to Chase Bank and deposited the check and asked what they would do in the same situation. I was told that part of their training was to verify nicknames and that certainly they would have cashed the check and charged me $6, it seems that Kathy/Kathleen is not difficut. I have receved checks drawn on Wells Fargo made out to Kathy and they cash them and do not charge me. After Chase,  I went to Band of America and asked them what they would do, and they told me "Kathy is short for Kathleen, everyone knows this, they just wanted to keep the money longer or they just didn't want to cash it for you".

When a bank fails to value their customers (I was told to have their client reissue the check) and uses their power to make a non-client NEVER WANT TO OPEN AN ACCOUNT they have gone too far. But when a tellar smirks at me and a Vice President fails to fill the gap between rules and reason, both are not longer necessary. I personally suggest that both are terminated.

PEOPLE, IF YOU WANT THE CHECKS YOU WRITE TO BE HONORED, DON'T BANK WITH CitiBank!

Where is the Discrimination?

AUTHOR: Evil Fluffy - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, July 16, 2017

You keep talking about discrimination, but I have yet to read -- in any of your comments -- anything that would be considered discrimination.  Do you know what discrimination is, or do you just like using the word to paint yourself in the light of a victim?

You're the one using more than one name. Why not tell your landlord you prefer to be called "Kathy" but all legal transcactions (i.e., checks written) must be in your given name of Kathleen?  How difficult is that?  That's not the bank's fault, it's YOUR fault.

Lastly, you might want to check your spelling of MANY words.  I, for one, won't take seriously someone who can't even spell simple words (or actually *any* words)  since they're obviously not smart enough to actually understand simple things (in your case, what discrimination actually is).

People like you are looking for something for nothing, and are looking to place blame on someone where blame simply isn't due.

It's nauseating reading ridiculous "complaints' that are nothing more than whine fests for peope who can't understand normal thinking.

Not the same situation

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 10, 2015

Quite the contrary... My name in interchanged even on my credit cards. Therefore I have cashed many checks with Kathy on the check.

We are NOT talking about the same situation, so please get off of the..Oh I go by Kathy spin.

1) You have a relationship with your 3 banks because you have an account with them.  You do not have this same relationship with Citibank.

2) Unless you are saying you went to even another bank(beyond the 3 you already have) and cashed a check for more than $3800 under the name Kathy it is not the same situation.

Note that but rebuttals never offerred even a hint of an apology?

- Also note that none of your report described the discrimination that you mentioned in the title.  That is why I responded.  However, if you want me to apologize..okay.  But I don't know what good it will do since I do not now or have I ever worked for this or any bank, nor do I know anyone involved in this entire thing.

I had six credit cards, two with Kathy; 3 with Kathleen; a passport and a drivers license.

- So what was the name on the 6th card?  Seriously though, carrying around a Passport is not a normal thing especially if you have a Drivers License.  It is almost like you went in there expecting to have trouble and wanted to be prepared...Ummm...

DON'T USE CITIBANK

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, June 10, 2015

I appreciated the responses however they do not address the complaint, it is simply one excuse after another. All readers can see the first rebuttal, it was the same arrogant posture that I received in the bank.

I'm not going to spend much more time on this, I will let the readers of this report make up their own mind. Yet I will address the comment that I cannot trust other banks because they were not presented with the same situation. Quite the contrary... My name in interchanged even on my credit cards. Therefore I have cashed many checks with Kathy on the check.

Finally, it is none of your business as to why I didn't just deposit the check and simply doens't have anything to do with what happened to me.

PEOPLE - Note that but rebuttals never offerred even a hint of an apology? This is why I filed the report in the first place! I have been told NO many times but I have never been treated so rudly at a bank in my entire life. They didn't have to cash the check, I get the fact I never want to bank with Citibank. Therefore, the motivation to file the complaint was not the fact that they didn't cash the check. The fact that they didn't cash the check while other banks do, simply means I have chosen wisely regarding my banking relationships.

When a bank creates so many rules that it makes humantiy the main obstical it is time to change banks, in my humble opinion. I had six credit cards, two with Kathy; 3 with Kathleen; a passport and a drivers license. My formal name is Kathleen and my friendly name is Kathy - People, you decided.

Not a valid complaint

AUTHOR: coast - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 09, 2015

The name on the check did not match your ID. That’s an inconvenience you created by using more than one name. The policy at other banks is not relevant. Credit cards are not a form of identification. Nothing in your report supports your claim of discrimination.

Did I miss it...

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 09, 2015

Perhaps you can help out here.  You talk about discrimination.   Yet when you get to the discrimination the only thing I see is they have a question over your name.  So is the discrimination against people named Kathy or Kathleen because that is all that seems to be talked about.

The bank's job is to protect their customer, and sorry but that is not you.  If someone comes off of the street and everything is not quite in order they not only have a right but a duty to reject the check.   Perhaps there are factors you don't know.  Such as perhaps their customer(the landlord) has filed disputes in the past on technicalities like this.  Perhaps they had other customers do the same thing and are just being overly cautious.  Or pehaps it really just is discrimination against the name Kathy.

While I really wonder why you didn't just deposit the check in one of your many other accounts in the first place.  I actually have a bigger issue with the employee at Bank of America, and I hope their manager would too.  The comment that employee made about them not cashing the check just because they wanted to hang onto the money longer is 100% inappropriate and while I am not in the banking industry, when I did work retail many moons ago any disparaging comments(and totally unfounded) claims like that would have had the employee at a minimum repremanded and at worst terminated.

Because a $3800 check that they may "hold onto" for another day would net them a few cents.  You also can not trust the other banks saying they would cash the check..because they were not presented with the same situation.  Perhaps they would..but perhaps they wouldn't.
