Today, August 19th, 2008, I received a letter from City Wide Standard Inc. with a very official check inside in the amount of 4875.00 drawn on the Univest National Band & Trust Co. in Plumsteadville, PA.
The letter states,
Winning Final Notification
We are pleased to inform you that you are one of the declared winners of DE-LOTTO NORTH AMERICAN SWEEPSTAKES LOTTERY held on June 13th, 2008 in the 2nd category.
We have made many unsuccessful attemps to contact you regarding this winning. You are therefore entitled to the sum of $125,000.00 US dollars. This is from total prize money of $4 million US dollars that was shared and presented amont the other 32 declared winners. Please note that all the participants were selected through a random computer ballot system from over 500,000 names.
In accordance with our disbursement policy your prize award money has been forwarded to our Clearing/disbursement institution to release your funds to you.
OK...Im not gonna copy any more of this letter, but you get the gist of it right?
Basically it says I've won a ton of money and here is a "good faith" check for you which has been deducted from your winnings. This first check is for paying your taxes on your winnings. It goes on to say that "Government taxes cannon be deducted from the winning amount because of the insurance bond policy coverage"
OK...since when is that true?
Then it tells me that my tax amount is $2875.00 and I have to pay it directy to the TAX AGENT by Western Union OR money gram.
Also I am NOT supposed to use this check until I call them. And I am supposed to keep this CONFIDENTAL so as not to alert any unscrupulous types trying to take advantage of the program.
Then it gives me a name and number to call.
WELL...immediately the old "if it looks too good to be true then it probably is" warning went off in my head.
I know this is bogus...only a moron would think otherwise.
But what freaks me out is that there may be some who think that this is valid and for those I wish the perpetrators would get caught.
PEOPLE..dont fall for this. ITS CLEARLY A SCAM!!!

Oh, well.

Too late, Mary. Thousands have fallen for this scam over the past few years. Many are in prison for bank fraud because they cashed those phony checks and spent the money. And since the scammers are in a foreign country, they will not be caught nor punished ( at least not in THIS life ). You are one of the few who had the good sense to check it out. And you are right - there are indeed MANY morons who fell for it. NO ONE sends you unsolicited checks in the mail. Good going, Mary !! You saved yourself a world of hurt by doing your homework on this scam.
