Beware of the Clark County Aquatics Department's Lifeguard Training Program. Especially if the Instructor is Jennifer Lloyd. In addition to a reluctant attitude towards entering the pool and getting wet for the purpose of giving examples of rescue methods to would-be lifeguards in training, she favors issuing certifications only to those who pay an additional $100, regardless of whether they fail the written component of the course.

Now if the weather was cold, I could see how the instructor may be somewhat reluctant to enter the water (and heaven forbid, do her job..) But since the training course took place at an indoor pool which eliminated weather as a factor, It's difficult to see any other acceptable reason.

But the big issue is having to pay for the course (the standard $25 rate), spend a lot of time on it (close to 8 hours a day at the pool for 5 days), continuously being reassured that you will pass, and then on the final day at the end of the class being told to take the course over again. Now if I had been failed for a legitimate reason, then it would be understanable. But seeing as how she passed someone else in the class who had failed the written exam, you would think the certification would be yours as well since you had done even better and passed each written exam with flying colors. WRONG.

Now normally I am one to try again harder after a failure, but when I found out that he paid an additional $100 along with the standard $25 fee, it made me wonder if that was the main reason he managed to receive the Lifeguard certification since he didn't pass the written exam. However, being the generous one, I gave the benefit of the doubt and told myself it must have been a just a coincidence. But later, when I learned that everyone else that didn't pay any more money than the standard $25 fee also didn't pass, any feeling of doubt I had was shattered and replaced with even more disappointment.

Having lost 8 hours each of those 5 days and missing study week before exams was something I'd have to get over, but in the end having nothing to show for it (such as the Lifeguard certification) changed it from disappointing to painful. Since getting a fair shot towards a certification is apparently out of the question, you would think that refunding the course fee or crediting the amount towards repeating the course may have shown empathy or even good will, but it seems even that's too much to hope for.

It is now clear to see that if you want to receive a Lifeguard certification in Clark County (or at least from Jennifer Lloyd), you'll have to slide a little something her way - a hundred will do just well it seems. And don't worry about the bill getting wet once she takes it, its easy to see that being in the water teaching is the last place she wants to be.

Red Cross Investigates - Claim Unfounded

AUTHOR: Scott Emerson - American Red Cross - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 19, 2009

(NOTE: Clark County Aquatics offers Red Cross courses under an authorized provider agreement. They offer aquatics classes on behalf of the American Red Cross.)

This issue was referred to the American Red Cross' Health & Safety Inquiry Committee in the Las Vegas area. A full investigation was conducted including attempts to contact the complainant. Documentation regarding the course, course fess and interviews with other students and instructors present that day were conducted. The basis of the claim by the complainant was unsubstantiated.

The instructor has been exonerated of any wrong doing in this case.

"Cheated's Claims Unfounded"

AUTHOR: Manager Of Recreation - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 13, 2009

The volume of incorrect information presented and the personal attack on a quality representative of Clark County demands a rebuttal.

The standard fee for the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification class is $125 for anyone from the general public who wishes to take the class. This includes 40 hours of instruction, all materials, facilty costs and certification cards. "Cheated" was afforded the rate of $25 that is offered to recruits who take the course with the intention of working for Clark County after certification. This is utilized as an incentive tool to attract new lifeguards to staff our 17 aquatic facilities throughout the county. All registrations for classes offered by Clark County follow a centralized registration process and are not personally accepted, nor handled by an instructor, giving no credence to "Cheated's" claim that money was pocketed by an instructor. Additionally, both this instructor and the other instructor assigned to this class were in the water during every class to offer demonstrations, as required by all American red Cross Lifeguard Training courses.

It is true that "Cheated" passed the written portion of the certification test; however, what was not disclosed was the fact that "Cheated" did not pass the practical skills portion. The other student in question passed the practical skills portion but did not pass the written component. As is standard with American Red Cross classes, both students had the option to re-take the portion that was failed in order to gain their certification. While the other student opted to re-test and, indeed, passed the next written test, "Cheated" did not show up for his scheduled re-test and therefore did not pass the class. It should be noted that "Cheated" did receive certification for CPR/AED, a sub-component of this course offering. Contrary to "Cheated's" statement, no other candidate in his class failed to pass the course.

The public should know that Clark County's Aquatics program and its employees, including the one unfairly defamed by "Cheated", operate according to the highest ethical and professional standards. And we employ only those lifeguards who pass all tests and are certified. Additionally, the program is a great place to work, as more than 200 lifeguards who return season after season will attest.
