On Jan.3,2003 after speaking with Shane at Coastal Condo's I reserved an 2 bedroom oceanfront condo at Ocean Pier 1 in North Myrtle Beach. I was familar with the complex as I stayed there last year. I request an oceanfront condo. and asked if this condo was oceanfront and was told yes. It is also advertised on the web page as oceanfront.

I called and talked to a rep named Shane and inquired at least 2 times to make sure it was oceanfront not oceanview. I was told each time I called that it was an oceanfront! On April 10, 2003 we arrived in North Myrtle Beach and went to Coastal Condos got the key and went the condo #304 at Ocean Pier 1. Condo #304 is oceanview not oceanfront. I immediately called coastal condo's and told them I was not happy, because I reqested a Oceanfront , not oceanview. I asked to be put in a different condo, they did not have one. I asked to speak to the owner of coastal condo's Cindy Bellamy, of course she was not in the office. I then request a refund, which I was told that they would have to check with Ms. Bellamy.

At this point we got back in our car (after driving 13 hours)and went back to the office. I told that I needed to speak to someone now and I wanted a refund. The man in the office, Shane said he refused to bother Ms. Bellamy on her day off. I said I'm sure she has a cell phone and you need to call her now. Then he told me to leave or he was going to call the police. At this point we left because nothing was getting resolved.

I left my cell phone # with a woman named Loretta and asked her to have Ms. Bellamy call me the next morning. The next morning no one called so I again called the office, Shane answered the phone and said Ms. Bellamy did not want to speak to me and said they didn't want me to call them again , I would habe to deal with the owner of the condo and gave me he phone number. I called the owner, Mr. Robert Derlinger and I told him that I was told the condo was oceanfront. He then said no one ever told me the condo was oceanview that it was oceanfront. I requested my money back because there was an oceanfront on the first floor that we could rent.

Mr. Derlinger told me he was offended that I did not like his condo, I told him that his condo was very nice, which it was but, I paid for an oceanfront condo not oceanview. He then said I am not refunding your money and hung up on me. I did find out who the president of the condo association was and I am filing a complaint. We had three familie staying at Ocean Pier 1 and none will be returning there next year. I am also filing a claim with the North Myrtle Beach Better Business Bureau.

Owner of Condo's response

AUTHOR: Bob - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 03, 2007

I am the owner of the condo mentioned in this complaint and I just learned this complaint was filed yesterday. I actually did the initial reservation with Ms. W through my internet site. The site shows the actual view from the balcony and the site also has a description of how the building is layed out.
Ms. W did call me after talking to Coastal Condo's (our management company)and I reminded her of the site and pictures. She received a substantial discount when she booked our unit and I even extended the discount for the 2 extra nights she stayed. You would not find many units in Myrtle Beach in the condition of this unit and get it for $100 a night during Easter vacation.
I also want to state I did not hang up on her. I did not give her what she wanted, which was a full refund after she stayed in our condo for 9 nights.
Coastal Condo's has been a wonderful small mangement company that I get constant compliments on the way they conduct business. This 1 renter's opinion is not a fair representation of Coastal Condo's. If she has any complaint it should be with me the owner as that is who she made her reservation with.

Coastal Condos Does Not Misrepresent our Condos

AUTHOR: Shane - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 02, 2007

My name is Shane Arnold, and I am the individual specifically named in this complaint against Coastal Condos, Inc. I only recently found out this complaint existed, so I was unable to answer this complaint until now, January 2007.

Although nearly 4 years has passed, I would like to take this opportunity to address this complaint.

Firstly, each and every time I have spoken with a customer regarding unit 304 at Ocean Pier, I have been very specific in explaining to the potential renter that the complex itself is located on the oceanfront. The building is designed like a letter 'L', with the back of the building facing directly toward the ocean and the south side of the building has balconies at a 90-degree angle.

I also specifically let each renter know that unit 304 is the first side-angle unit just around the corner. It is closest to the beach, so it has a GREAT VIEW of the ocean and of the beachline facing southward. One looks to the left end of balcony to face the ocean instead of the front of the balcony.

Cindy, the owner of Coastal Condos, and our other reservationist, Loretta, can both attest that I have specifically made sure that I described this condo layout to each and every person I have rented the unit to. This is the case in this particular rental as well. In addition, there is an actual photograph of the ocean from the balcony of 304, so that renters could see the actual view before renting the unit.

It was on a Thursday, April 10th, after checking in, that Ms. Wilson came into the office to complain. Since it was Easter time, we had no other comparable units near the area to offer the renters. Ms. Wilson was extremely agitated and quite rude and demanded that we move her to a unit directly oceanfront in the building. She continued to be belligerent in her attitude, so I finally did ask her to leave the office, as there was nothing further I could do that day. We only rent 2 units at the Ocean Pier complex, and both units we rent are the side-view units.

Thursday is Cindy's day off, so I was not authorized to make a refund on a unit we had held since January. We still have our copy of the contract, signed by Ms. Wilson. They had originally rented from April 12th -19th, but added 2 additional nights, so they came in on the 10th of April.

The renter remained in the condo until April 19th, and beacuse they had left some items in the unit, we even mailed these items back to them around April 24th, and we still have the receipt for the $21.01 charge to mail the items back to the renters then.

I would be willing to sign an affidavit that all statements I have made are true to the very best of my knowledge.

Respectfully Submitted,
Shane Arnold
North Myrtle Beach, SC

Don't stop till you get your refund!

AUTHOR: Melanie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 29, 2003

I work at the front desk of a hotel and I agree that you deserve a refund for your inconvenience. I do want to say that when people call my hotel to make reservations and they have special requests, such as wanting first floor or a room close to the lobby, we always do our best to accommodate them but we advise them that it is a request only and we cannot guarantee that their requests will be fulfilled. Reservations are not seen until the day of check in, but I would say that 95% of their requests are not a problem. This is what you should have been told from the beginning. The person who took your reservation should not have said yes, it's an oceanfront room if they could not guarantee that. They should have told you that it was a request, and that they would do the best they can. Them saying this probably would have avoided any major further problems.

But most importantly, if you were not satisifed with the condo you should not have had the hassles that you were forced to deal with. Judging from what you said, upon noticing that it was not what you reserved, you immediately called the desk, and, upon finding that nothing else was avaiable, decided to leave. Now, at the hotel I work for, if a person checks in and 10 minutes later decides to check out because they are not satisfied, we apologize and check them out with no charge. Done, end of story. This is what should have happened to you too. It's not like you used the room...it's not like you stayed in the room for a few hours and decided to check out. I don't understand why this place gave you such a hard time. You certainly didn't deserve it and I sincerely hope you get the refund you most definitely deserve. Good luck!
