On January 20, 2009 I received a call from my aunt in New York saying that a man by the name of Mr. Kirby was repeatedly calling her home number, a place I haven't lived in over 5 years. Even after telling them that no one by my name lives there they still continued to call. I then tried contacting the phone number that they gave her and but every time I would call it sounded like someone would pick up and not say anything. After trying to call them several times, I gave up thinking that it was just s scam.

On March 10, 2009 I happened to look at my credit report and noticed that there was a collection on there from a place called Sentry Recovery and Collection. It was a collection from my old apartments in Las Vegas with a total amount due of $3450.08. It also had the same number that I had tried repeatedly tried to call nearly 2 months ago with no luck. I immediately tried calling again and this time I actually got through to someone. I spoke with Mr. Kirby and he stated that if I didn't pay this debt right now that it would go to court. I told him that I didn't have that much money to pay it and if we could set some kind of payment plan up. He then put me on hold for several minutes saying that he would have to call the attorney and see if he would agree to a payment plan. When he finally came back he said that the only way the attorney would agree to a payment plan is if I paid them at least $785 right now. I asked if he could please send me some kind of statement stating how much I owed so that I would know that this was actually a legitimate company but he refused. I agreed to pay the $785 plus a $15 fee to take my payment over the phone with my checking account.

A few weeks later I received the payment agreement in the mail stating that I was to make a payment of $75 on the 5th and 20th of every month and if I defaulted that $863 in attorney's fees would be added on to my balance. I promptly signed it and sent it back. I then continued making payments for $75 as agreed, one on April 10th, April 26th and one on May 6th. When I tried to make my next payment on May 20th, they informed me that my check from April 26th had bounced and that my account was now in default. I asked if I could just make 2 payments right now and he said that it was too late that it was already with the courts and he couldn't talk to me about how to resolve this because his computer was down and I would have to call him back the following day.

By this time Mr. Kirby had disappeared and now a man by the name of Mr. Allen was in charge of my account. When I called the following day he informed me that I had to come into the office immediately to sign some more papers so I wouldn't get sued. I told him that since I now live in Reno I would not be able to that. He said that since he was in good mood that day, he would do me a favor and mail me a stipulation for me to sign saving me the $863 in attorneys fees. That was only if I made a payment of $150 right then. I authorized him to take the payment out of my checking account. He also asked me where I worked so that they wouldn't come after my paycheck.

Weeks went by and I never received the new agreement he said he would mail nor did the payment for $150 ever come out of my checking account. I then called them again wanting to find out why the payment never came out of my account and con Mr. Allen was conveniently out of the office every time I called. After calling 5 or 6 times trying to get a hold of him I was extremely aggravated. Every time I called they would pretend they didn't know me and didn't recall any of our pervious conversations. After being extremely irate with his secretary, Mr. Allen finally called me back later that day. He said that there was some kind of problem with the back that my last payment hadn't come out. I told him that I was trying to pay this debt back and they were making it nearly impossible for me to do so. He then said that he didn't care whether I paid it or not and that unless I apologized for being rude to his secretary that he was going to garnish my wages. He then added that I need to look in the mirror because I was being stupid, that I was never to call this number again and then hung up on me.

Nearly a month later on June 26th, the check for $150 came out of my back account. A week after that on July 3rd I received my pay check with $237 garnished from it. I then received a writ of execution in the mail in favor of the collection agency dated May 19th. So even though they had a court order to garnish my wages they still continued taking money out of my back account. Because my last payment of $150 was after the court order it is not included in the payments that I already made on the writ of execution. I never got anything in the mail saying I was being sued nor I was given a chance to defend myself. I have proof of all the payments I made to them and I should not have to pay an extra $863 in attorneys fees since I was continually making payments to them. This company is extremely deceitful and manipulating in the way they do business and took advantage of me because I didn't know any better. My paychecks being garnish is causing an extreme hardship on me because I can no longer can afford to pay all of my bills or buy groceries. I would appreciate any help or advice that you can offer me.

Sentry recovery and allied collections R scammers! Do not sign any payment agreement!

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, February 11, 2013

I am going through a similar experience with this. Mr Allen and julia alvarado r theifs! I learned from a previos experience of signing payment arrangements how dirty they truly are here. On my last payment i called to pay over the phone and was told their system was down and told my husband to come in person the next day to pay and we'd be fine. The next day they said no one told u that and u r in default and garnishe my husbands wages! A debt of probably $500 ended up costing us I think $5000.00 at the end! DO NOT Sign anything with this company!!

I knew better this time and when they tried to threaten me on bogus charges from an apt a month after I moved out I started researching. I was severed a lawsuit at work and never received a bill from anyone. Actually sentry refused to send me anything. I was panicked and spent the last ninth crying and stressed on what to do and trying to find legal help. Couldnt find an affordable lawyer or anyone to help me and was scared of being garnished.

1st thing to do is DONT ignore it if u were served! Even if u have no time to find help go to the courthouse self help and ask how to file your answer if you don't have a lawyer. Answer it the best you can. If you do have some time before you must respond or web after you file your answer, look up legal aid in las Vegas on 8th st!

They were so wonderful and helpful. They find u probono lawyers and help u take care of the rest. I wish I knew about this immediately so I could've saved myself from the stress lack of sleep & emotional hell I've been through but I am glad I have their help now & hope to help others like me who get scMned or don't have the $ to fight back! They do this everyday to people.

Even if u actually owe the debt they are not going to win their attorney fees or whatever interest they threaten u have. It is better to set up an arrangement with the court & try to fight it then have the lack of knowledge of your rights and get ripped off by overpaying or being garnished alot of $! And remember always show up to court! Hope this helps and I hope junk debt collectors especially these 2 have a class action suit against them soon!

I am going through this right now...

It is unbelieveable how bad mannered these people are at Sentry Recovery. They wouldnt let me finish my sentences, they talked over me, had nothing but attitude, said nothing but insults not only towards me but also included an insult about my mother. I asked to speak with the rep that originally helped me during the paperwork process but got transferred to this Mr. Allan who happens to be the manager. After he hung up on me I called him back and got transferred to his secretary Julia Alvarez who had nothing but attitude and insults as well. She did nothig but kept putting me on hold everytime I had a question. Everytime she came back from a hold she would give me an answer to a question I didnt ask and I would ask her the same question and put me on hold again. After minutes and minutes of being put on hold, I either get put on hold again or get disconnected. After she had the final words of pay full amount now or we process papers for garnishmement I asked her another question and acts like she couldnt hear me and hung up. I called again but got transferred only to a voicemail after that.

They use entrapment to squeeze more money out of people who are willing to make payments. I filed a complaint with FTC and going to file another with BBB. Has anyone started a class act? Please contact me if in process... Email: goodgyrl247@yahoo.com

Similar experience with Mr Allen & Sentry

AUTHOR: Rachel.D - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, March 10, 2011

I experienced a similar situation with this company.  I notice this was reported 2 years ago, but I dealt with Mr. Allen this past summer, and still have to call him every 2 weeks to make payments.

When the company first contacted me regarding a debt from an apartment complex, I was told to come into the office to set up a payment agreement.  I went in and signed some paperwork saying that I was to pay $25 every 2 weeks, and it would be automatically charged to my debit card.  I explained that this would be easier for me since I work full time, go to school, and also have a 2 year old.  They took a photo copy of my card and everything.  Then a few weeks later, when I noticed that the payments were never taken out, I called the company and was told by Mr. Allen that I was in default and they were in the process of garnishing my wages.  Turns out what I signed that day I went in was a judgment against me - I had no idea.  Also I was told that they NEVER take debit cards or automatic payments, so they basically fabricated that whole payment agreement knowing that I would go into default.

So in order to stop my wages from being garnished, i had to go back in the office and set up a NEW agreement, and they said they wouldnt accept anything unless I gave them $250 cash right away.  Which I did, they stopped the garnishment, and we had a new agreement outlined.

Less than 2 weeks later, I'm on my way to California for a weekend and my debit card is declining out of no where.  I call the bank and come to find out Sentry placed a legal hold on all of my accounts.  At this point, my 2nd payment from the new agreement wasn't even due yet.  I called and spoke to Mr Allen once again, and I have never dealt with such an unprofessional, disrespectful business person.  He told me that when they were garnishing my wages, they were also garnishing my bank account at the same time.  When I asked why this wasn't stopped along with the wage garnishment when I paid the $250 cash, he said that it's not his problem and it was my fault because I was the one that let the account go into default.  He called me an incompetent mother among many other things, reducing me to tears.  He also used some other name calling, bullying tactics in trying to get me to come in with $750 cash to unfreeze my accounts.  Mind you that I was stuck in california with absolutely NO access to any of my money for 3 days.

Long story short, I had to wait until I came back to Vegas on monday and talked to a lawyer to get my accounts released.  The lawyer advised me to just make the agreed upon payment ($250 which was due the next day), and she would follow up with the company to have my accounts released.  According to my lawyer, it was a mistake on their part to even allow my bank to be garnished after a new agreement was established.  Unfortunately she said there was nothing that could be done regarding the way that Mr. Allen treated me.  I still have to call and speak to this guy every 2 weeks to make a $25 payment over the phone, and I get a nasty attitude everytime I ask for a simple confirmation number, or the remaining balance.  I'm sure when I'm about to be done paying off the account, I will have some more problems, and if I do I will be sure to repost.  If you think a class action is possible, feel free to contact me.  I already filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General, and the Federal Trade Commission.

I am appalled that this company is still operating and treating people like this on a daily basis.  If there is anything more that I can do please let me know.
