I have been also contacted from Jefferson Capital Systems,LLC EMBLEM MasterCard). They have told me that I have been selected for the EMblem MC fresh start solution. They say that I have a debt of $249.00 with Verizon. They are offering me a pre-approved, unsecured MC card with a $75.00 credit special to help me reduce this debt. They even prodided a phone # and an acct # from Verizon.

I called JCS, LLC and they wanted the last 4 digits of my SSN - I did not give it to them of course, and they would not verify the information on the account they 'had' on me either, this made me very suspecious so I contacted Verizon (which I never had an account with in the first place) They could not match my name to an account, for obvious reason, so I had a hint that this was either a scam or ID theft.

PLEASE spread the word about these scams!! I am very glad I came accross your website to inform other consumers that might fall for this trap. I intend to send JCS LLC a letter letting them know we know they are out there and we will not let them make other victims out of their scams.

No wonder the bible says in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 that in these last days critical times hard to deal with will be here, For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, disloyal, having no natural affection, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, betrayers.... But in a way I am also glad to know that these prohecies are becoming true because that also means that the promise of paradise will also be truth. Revelations 21:3,4.

Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC - 2 Time User

AUTHOR: Tracie - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Afternoon all.

Couple things:

1) I am NOT an employee of JCS, LLC, nor have I ever been.
2) I DO understand my rights, statutes of limitation, and know my credit report

Those things said, I understand how this company can be mistaken for a scam.  There are some simple guidelines to ensure that you aren't paying for something that you no longer are required to pay.  I call it, Know If You Have Rights.

=KNOW your credit report.  Know when something has been placed on there. Know when it gets sold to another company.  Know how much you have to pay.  In other words, it's not the creditor's or collection agency's responsibility to make sure your report is accurate, it's yours.

=IF it's a valid debt -  contact the original creditor and find out if your account has been sold or if you can set up payment arrangements with them directly.  I've done this and gotten letters of satisfaction of payment.  If they have sold the account, or can't find it, then you'll need to go through the validation of debt scenario with the collection company.

=YOU can - as I have - rebuild your credit with companies like this.  I've done it twice.  After  you've verified that this is a legitimate debt that still needs to be paid and the original creditor has indeed sold it - then these types of programs can actually be beneficial.  No credit after bad credit almost as bad as just bad credit.

=HAVE you paid them?  JCS, LLC has low payments. I did it and got my credit card. I had to pay off the amount owed first.  However on my credit report it shows as a line of credit that i'm current on.  After I paid the debt, I had $50 in credit.  After 3 months of paying on time, it went to $75. This helps on weeks i need gas.  I pay it on pay day and it's building my credit back up.

=RIGHTS are there for both sides.  You have an obligation to pay a debt and they have a right to be paid. But you have a right to have the debt validated and there are specific rules the creditors AND collection agencys MUST follow. It's time consuming but worth it.

They are NOT a scam but could - if you don't dispute it - take money that may not have needed to be paid.  It's your job to make sure you're not "taken" by anyone. But no, they aren't a scam.

Most Honest Offer I Have Ever Seen

AUTHOR: Paul W - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 14, 2009

I received an offer from them to retire a fairly recent chargeoff on a credit card I had  defaulted on.  Even though this account is fairgame they stated in BOLD Print that it might be beyond statute of limitations and I should be aware of that.  I am no dummy and I have read the entire offer including the preliminary offer of the credit card when certain actions are completed.  The entire principal of the account is frozen and when joined to the credit card it guaranteed to stay at 0% interest until paid; the interest rate is 18% (high but not riduculous) fees are in the moderate range (late payment = $10.00).  Even a guarantee of a refund of money paid after a couple months if not satisfied (and this is money I already owe).  No tricks on defaults, etc.  It looks like a straightforward win win for me.

Is and not a scam at the same time

AUTHOR: C C - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 31, 2009

The company is real and the debt is real so if you didnt have an account with Verizon I suggest you get a credit report and make sure. Jefferson is an actual collection agency and they get their information from the company that sold them the debt. normally once your account has been written off and turned over to a collection agency, the customer service reps at the regular 800 numbers cannot easily find the account....unless that Verizon rep sent you to their own collections department the look deeper for that account I wouldnt simply assume that it wasnt there....someone could have very easily opened up a Verizon account online without your knowledge.

With that said it is a scam like the above poster said in that some companies throw this option your way when that 7 year limit is almost up and they have to remove that info from your credit report (another way around this is if they sell your debt to another agency). if you accept the option they can now continuously report to the credit agencies. Plus now they are collecting interest from your balance, late fees ect and now you have an open line of credit that you probably dont need.

All they are offering you is a settlement wrapped up in pretty paper to look nice. They chose not to send a letter because they know you will just throw it away but now youre being offered something for making a payment---a nice new credit card and they know that people with no credit or bad credit will jump on it.

regardless what route you choose the debt s real. Whether it was fradulent identity theft or you actual own that debt you should take care of it. I would say instead of the card eother wait the 7 years for it to drop and hope they dont sell it to another company before that, set up a payment plan, or just settle the debt--I wouldnt dare take the card.

not a ripp off

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 21, 2009

i was contacted thru the mail to pay off a debt which was only about 2 years old. i knew it was mine because i had received a credit report. after paying off the $166.00 that was required, i recieved my card within a month after my last payment was cleared. in fact i paid it off in 4 months. i have not had a problem with my card since recieving it. my payments are still only 20.00 a month. i have used my card, but for small enough purchases that i am able to pay it off rightaway. the only problem i have is that there are only 2 ways for me to pay according to my state. but thats okay. this a good chance to help improve my credit. its possible that the person who was told about the old verizon bill was not theirs. get a credit report and dispute those that are not yours. i had 3 which werent.

This is absolutely a scam

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 16, 2008

I have a feeling that many of the positive rebuttals are being made by the company itself. Any company that threatens legal action for an old debt while at the same time offering you a new credit card is absolutely a scam.

I also recieved a letter from Jefferson Capital trying to force me into a credit card to pay off a debt that was already paid and closed five years ago. Luckily I did not fall for this but some people are.

There are a few things that you can do if you've been having problems with Jefferson Capital or a similiar company.

Number one, check your credit report. You can do this for free at www.annualcreditreport.com. If you find that there are items on there for debts that are not yours or have already been paid you can dispute these items through the credit reporting agency. This is also free and very easy. Once the investigation is complete depending on their findings they will remove the items from your credit report.

You can also file claims with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the Federal Trades Commission (www.ftc.gov). If you are somebody who has already fallen for this, these agencies may not be able to do much for you but they can help prevent this from happening to anybody else. The FTC has already filed suit against Jefferson Capital for "Deceptive Credit Card Marketing."

The most important thing is to research any company who you are thinking of getting involved with. With the internet it is easier and quicker than ever to investigate any company. Obviously with websites like Rip Off Report you can find lots of information but you can also tell alot by a companies website. For example, if you look at their contact info and they do not give an e-mail address, I have found that it is usually because they recieve so many complaints and people are more hesitant to complain when they have to speak to a real person or write a letter.

Also if the website has nothing but testimonials it is usually suspect. Of course common sense is the most important. If something doesn't make sense (i.e. offering a credit card to somebody you think hasn't paid a debt in years) that is your biggest heads up.

Remember, debt has a statue of limitations, so if the debt is beyond this time period, you do not have to pay it.

Accepting a new credit card to pay for old debt can create big problems for you, the consumer. This rolls over the statue of limitations, making it easy for the debt collection agency to sue you...something that they couldn't do had you not rolled the old debt onto a new credit card.

Satisfied Customer

AUTHOR: Kayla - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 08, 2008

I was contacted via snail mail last year by Jefferson Capital concerning an old debt I had and began paying it off 20 a month as per our agreement. Once I had paid a majority of the debt, I qualified for the Emblem MasterCard and the remainder of the debt was placed intrest free on my card. So, although it sounds like this person may be a victim of identity theft, this company is not a rip off. They do what they say and with reasonable terms. Even the poorest of us can afford a $20 a month payment, and we end up getting a credit card out of the deal too. So you are repairing your credit by paying off an old debt and gaining a better rating by having a revolving account. I am a very satisfied customer!
