We received a letter from College Admissions Assistance, Inc. stating that we have been scheduled to participate in an educational group presentation to help determine college admission assistance and financial aid eligibility for Ana, our daughter. She is a high school student. We assumed that because they had our child's name and information and we had already been scheduled that this was somehow school related but it wasn't.

Following the presentation we were conducted to a personal interview which consists of some questions to our child about their hobbies and what they like to do in school. Then the price was finally admitted. It was $1995.00, and they wanted the payment in full that day. The price was given to us at a "discount" because we "participated in the workshop". Otherwise the price was over $2000.00. We had no time to think about it because they claimed their "workshop" travels and they will be out of our area, they insisted we could not go home and review their materials, or research their company online.

They asked us to complete a questionnaire about our daughter and mail it to them as soon as we arrived home. At the time we didn’t know this information they were offering us is information we can find free online. We completed the questionnaire after making our account on their website which we can send to you as proof in a screenshots. Before we left the workshop, we were told we could cancel our contract at any time to find out any time meant “3 days” after signing the contract. We were informed that after using their services we had the right to cancel our contract after 3 days prior without a refund, this was also a lie. We waited around 2 weeks after we made our profile as they asked waiting for the phone call they were supposed to give us to start the program. In the time spent which we did not receive any contact from them; it was already too late to abandon CAA. After a few months we found that the services were not worth the price. We call the company and they refused to cancel the contract, they then informed us that we are going to face the collection agency.

We are locked into a contract that even if we stopped making payments, we would still be responsible for paying the "loan" we didn't want and for services and information we later discovered can be obtained free of charge from schools and on the internet and are not worth the price. They very much prey upon the fears and insecurities of people who are afraid their kids are at a disadvantage for success.

CAA Was Clear About Their Agreement

My daughter just finished 10th grade and we signed up for the CAA service this past year.  At their workshop we heard the presentation about the challenges of getting into and affording the right college.  Then we sat down with one of the CAA counselors who walked us through our situation and proposed a program with different pay plans.  There were several different ways to pay for the program....and it didn't have to be paid up front.  I know, because I specifically asked this question.

They were very clear about the cancellation provision in their standard retail contract.  It sounds like you either got a counselor who was incorrect or you didn't hear what was being stated. 

BTW, the service has really helped my daughter to think through getting into a good college.  She's taken advantage of the tools they offer and we're already planning a couple of college visits this summer.  It's been well worth the investment.

What makes the difference for her are the coaches she talks to on a regular basis.  They relate to her interests & talk her through when and how to pursue various colleges.  You can't get that for free on the internet.

They're a legitimate organization...and doing good work.

I am not sure that they could actually force you to accept school loan even with a contract. You may need to talk to an attorney about this if your daughter has not attended a college yet and see what the attorney think about the contract. However, you may be binded to the service fee they posted on the contract. I wish you a good luck on this and hope you can stop the loan process.
