All - First, let me say, if you do work for Combined Insurance, great for you, wish you all the success in the world...however....I personally couldnt get past the b.s....which was very clear....just in the interview itself.

I have never even been on this site before..but boy im glad I did. You know how you get that gut instinct? Well..here is my story in a nut shell. Its actually quite amusing which makes them look even more rediculous.

I am a professional, am a licensed agent for Tx and have been in the insurance industry for 14 years. I recently left my consulting position with a wonderful company whome I spent 8 years with. Me leaving, was for personal reasons, goals, and the fact that I was ready for bigger and better things and had a great deal of support from my husband in doing so.

My resume was posted on CareerBuilder.com. I have had several interviews for great companies, and really and just weighing my options at this point. I received the usual email all the others received about my resume and was asked to call to set up an interview. That which I did. I was sheduled to meet with Mike.....at a hotel. Meeting at the hotel, my thought was, perhaps he has come in from out of town and is interviewing from the hotel, perhaps in a confidential type location, office type setting. Was not the case. I arrive at my scheduled time...and sat in the lobby..about 10 feet away from Mike, while he was interviewing...or tricking another potential candidate. Then..it was my turn. Ok. We met, he was a pleasant person and professional, however, really did not have alot of things to say about the company, wasnt really trying to sale me on how great the company is..but really wanted to know...if I thought this was for me or not. AT that point..I really couldnt say.

The interview lasted about 15 min. He advised me, there would be salary plus commissions for the first year..which was awesome...as this is hard to come by in this type of job and industry. He advised me they were a W2 company and offered all the benefits, medical ,dental, 401k...etc etc. Wow. sounds great.

He advised me..I would hear back in the next day or so as to whether or not they thought I was a good fit and if I would be asked to come back..for a demo. Now, he also asked..if at some point in the next week if I would like to go out with another agent and spend the day with them to get an idea of how their day was. Ok. Sounds great. I didnt realize..the demo....was the same...as going out with the agent. I say this..also, because I was called back...to meet with the disctrict mgr, again, I was to meet him at the same hotel for a demo. I met with him, we sat there for an hour...really just talking. About..any and everything. He kind of answered a few questions...I just thought..ok, this is the demo and second part of the interview, not realizing, in the next few moments, I was to leave with him, to out for the entire day, and drive to some small location an hour away, with a complete stranger. I advised him.....that I wasnt aware this meeting...was the day I would actually be going out for the day. I told him..I had another appt later that day. Now....he didnt know what the other appt was for..hell for all he could have known..it could have been for another interview. He insisted I reschedule my other appt. I finally told him...I was pregnant and that this was my OB appt that had been scheduled for over a month. lol! He says....."Well....where is it at?" I told him, Austin, at 1:30. It was only 10am at this time. He says.."Well....we can go to your appt, and I will just wait in the lobby and read a magazine." Ok. This is where it got weird. Hello.....your a stranger, who is interviewing me...and you want to go to my ob/gyn appt with me....? Um...I dont think so.

Needless to say...he talked me into going out with him, and that he would have me back in time...so that I could go to my appt. Alone that is! ha ha. WEll......lucky for me...we get 10 miles down the road and the idiot ended up having to pull over 3 times..for me to puke! Well...he kept on driving. I finally said...Look....this isnt going to work. I dont think its a good idea..for me to go meet with your clients...sick like this. REally...I think it was just my nerves..as I had had no sickness in the 4 months of my pregnancy at this point. Not to mention..the guy would not shut up.

Ok..so I get home and again, my gut instinct is...something is just weird here. So.....I started doing some research. Ended up here. Most of the stories....are alot of what I was told..and then some. I just didnt go any further than that day..thankfully.

I found out alot of info and decided to call Mike..and.."ask him a few questions that I had". Now, after the second question..he wanted to know..why was I asking. I was like...."Oh...just a few questions I didnt get to ask earlier that I wanted to know.

A few of the questions, which I was lied about in the beginning, which he did tell me the truth....after I asked.

One was.....do you pay for my gas. NO.
Two was.....since Im from Dallas, and have to go to the school there...do I have to stay at the hotel. YES. Mind you...Im already licensed!
Three was....is the hotel paid for. He said YES...but found out later....it would have been deducted from my pay.
Four was....do I get my own hotel room. NO. You will stay with another person..unless you are the only female there, then you get your own room....also....you CANT leave under any circumstances. You must stay there at all times. lol! Ok...we are all adults here.
Five was...when does my medical benefits start. I was never advised...I would have to wait 6 months for that to kick in..and an entire YEAR for the other benefits like 401k and such...to kick in.

I have never heard of such. Are they serious?

Sixth question was......is there an office location? He said..no not yet....its almost finished. We are waiting for them to paint and install carpet. LIE! They dont have an office, never have...and never will. They meet up at this Hotel.....and drag people in..basically off the streets, and I mean..anyone...and try to get them to work for the company.

Basically..in a nut shell....what you are doing.....or will be doing that they dont tell you is.....you will be driving around.....for hours, all day, every day.....basically going to doors, business, whatever, and going in trying to see if anyone would talk to you about the products. You do this..for like 10 hours a day, on your own dime, gas, mileage, car....all that. None..which is reimbursed or paid for. So..what basically.....you are working for yourself...doing contract work. Which is what they said...YOU will NOT be doing.

Its all a bunch of bulls**t. You get the hint. Read some of the postings....read the reports from customers. Read the law suites out there. Seriously. They go on..for DAYS!

It was..a joke. And the people are a bunch of idiots. Do you really think....Im going to waist my time...making you look good selling products..that dont even exist and working for a company that is unethical? Read the reports, read the law suits.....read about this company before waisting your time. You will find...that your gut..was right.

Read up folks! About Combined insurance. Read what the customers themselves have to say.

One more thing. I was told If I passed the questionair thingy..I would be called. Well.....they called me of course. Obviously. Funny thing is....they never mentioned the stupid questionair thingy that I was suppose to fill out. I never filled the d**n thing out the begin with. I doubt they even knew this. Another thing...most want to have your licensing info, license #...they never asked me..which was another red flag.

Weirdo's!!!!

Numerous HR complaints and lawsuits have been filed against this company. Google Combined and you'll see what I mean. All these people posted here have gone on to successful careers. We simply post here to warn others to steer clear. I would suggest that you research any company that you buy supplemental insurance from and STAY AWAY FROM COMBINED!!!!

Combined Insurance 2013

It sounds like you should have reported those "managers" conduct to Combined HR.

Yes the Worksite Voluntary Markets is tough.
Looks to be very saturated at this point.

But if their conduct back then, was as  you stated, sounds like legal action was in order too.

Hope you landed successfully somewhere else.

I wonder if you're still chanting?????

Since this was filed in 2009, I wonder if your still on track to make 75,000 a year or was it I will make 75,000 in four years? Ok so I agree that sales is not for everyone, however, a good company with a solid reputation will help you go far. I will admit, Combined isn't all bad, but if they treated their agents like..well..agents then I guess 105 reports wouldn't exist all saying the same thing. So, until they change they way they do business......STAY AWAY......well you know the rest.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

it works for some people

Some people have what it takes to make it in sales.  I think a lot of it may depend on the area you are trying to work with the condition of the current economy.  If you are trying to work an area that has already been worked many times before like I was, then it is a lot harder to make sales.

Please stop regurgitating that PMA crap.  Thats all the current employees do.  If you are a single person and have no family this is the perfect job for you.  But I have a family already.  I dont want to bring my work home every night.  I can clearly see why my TM and his wife dont get along very well(the few times I heard them talking on the phone with each other I could tell they didnt get along).  I am happy you are about to make 75,000 dollars this year.  Thats great.  Like I said, some people enjoy this kind of work.  Me personally, I didnt like going up to random peoples' houses and trying to sell them something they couldnt afford.  Yes it is better to have insurance and not need it then to need it and not have it.  But thats just one of the lines they tell you to tell people to convince them they need it.  I feel personally lucky I didnt get shot in the field.  The area we were working was absolutely horrible.  YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SELL INSURANCE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE SITTING OUTSIDE AND SMOKING WEED.  Chances are they dont have the money and dont care to hear your little pitch.

Closing, part of this depends on the area you are working in.  From my personal experience,  the area sucked.  Others may have more luck.  To those who do, great.

Not everyone can make it in sales

AUTHOR: Thrilled with Working for Combined Insurance - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 08, 2009

I have been working with Combined Insurance for 5 years now and I admit that when you first start out...its tough. But if you work hard and enjoy helping people, it stops being a job and becomes a lifestyle. Combined says "give us a year and we'll give you a career". I've worked in many different companies and I have never had the opportunity to make as much money as I want.

Combined was founded by a man who promoted the PMA philosophy....Positive Mental Attitude. He was a visionary whose sales system has been successful since the early 1920's. His name was W. Clement Stone. Do some research and you'll see Combined is a true Insurance company that has helped a tremendous number of individuals and their families with cash when they needed it most. Isn't it important to have insurance and not need it then to need it and not have it or not qualify?

Someone said that Combined is a cult....HA! I've never heard of a cult that helps its employees built a client base and have unlimited earning potential. I am personally on course to gross over 75,000 this year alone. When you work commissioned sales... you have to have self-discipline and a plan of action to be successful. Sales never fall in your lap. Realistically, do you know anyone who gets up in the morning and says, "Boy . . . I hope someone offers to sell me insurance today..." If you said yes, you are seriously delusional.

The comments about meeting in a hotel lobby or meeting room is an unfortunate  possibility. However, in many states like New York, there is a state office, regional offices and branch offices. But depending on the distance to your assigned area, it is just convenient to meet locally. That is the choice of the supervisor and can be to your benefit.

Lastly, if you do the right thing because it's the right thing to do.... the income becomes a positive outcome of doing your job.  It's sad that a few uninformed people can post opinions without having all the facts... I hope more people who have benefited from Combined Insurance have the courage to let the world know..
