In September 2007 Comcast came out to my house to install my cable. The very first thing I said when they walked in the door was that I had my own modem and didn't need theirs. The installers took quite a while doing the installation and left without telling me my temporary name and password in order to set up my e-mail. The first thing I had to do was call tech support in order to do what they should have told me before they left. They did such a great job that someone had to come out the next day and fix what they messed up.

Anyway, I was having problems for the first month and at one point when I called tech support I was asked for my modem's serial number. It was hard to read and when I went to the box it came in so I could read it better, I found it didn't match the number on the modem they installed.

To make a long story short, the installers stole *my* modem and left me a Comcast one. I am now being billed for a monthly rental charge. I have complained numerous times and today I was told that this was investigated three times and it was determined that my modem never left my house! Well, where did it go?

If they felt there was a problem with my modem, which was brand new, I have another modem that they could have used.

There is no reason on this earth that I would rent a modem from them when I had two perfectly good modems that I owned.

I'm still waiting for Comcast to do something but in the meantime I have contacted the Consumer Affairs Office. There may be nothing I can do because I can't *prove* that they took the modem. Even the work order has the original serial number of *my* modem on it (scratched out) and replaced with the Comcast serial number.

It looks like I may have to return their modem and simply take the loss in order to have the rental charges removed.

So, everyone, watch your installers when they come to your house. You may be allowing a thief in. Keep an eye on them at all times and you won't have to go through what I am going through.

yes...im sure the tech stole your 60 dollar modem on purpose...

Majority of the time the work orders are incorrect and say MODEM RENT when in reality the customer has already informed customer service (or sales) that they intend on using thier own modem. Customer service doesn't always put MODEM OWN on the work order when they are supposed to. The tech probably had a MODEM RENT on his work order, brought out a modem, mixed it up with yours, and installed the wrong one. Im guessing your had a motorola surfboard (common modem). There really is no reason a tech would ever or should ever want to steal a modem.

The possibility that the tech stole your modem is definitely present. But I would give him the benefit of the doubt. Usually techs have so many installations throughout the day they just try to get IN AND OUT as fast as possible and have a million things running through thier minds. Itd be real easy to make a mistake. Unfortunately we may never know for sure if he actually and purposely stole your modem or if it was a mistake.

Just a thought.

I have had some calls here in the call center where such a thing has happened. You are right, Susan, you have to be careful and be present when the tech installs. Alot of them are contractors, not actual employees. I dont know what else to say, other than that stinks and I am sorry. I hope a claims form was done, and keep at it, if ya could. If you persist, then comcast is more likely (after lots of hassle) to either pay for the modem or come to some agreement with you. You can still use your 2nd modem with comcast, it should work.
