Dear Sir:

We are in a terrible situation, not of our making and I don't know what else to do. Please do not ignore us.

My mother (age 79) and myself (61) have been intimidated, swindled and been the victim of lies. When my stepfather passed away, he wanted me to have a new computer, since my original one was too obsolete to modernize. After research and contemplation I got a Dell and I love it. AOL came with it, urging that I get Broadband. I didn't know what that was, but in my excitement over the new computer, I complied. That's when the nightmare began.

I received a package from Covad Communications, which I'd never heard of, with hardware. I discovered that it could not be used in this older house's phone system, so I sent the hardware back to Covad, with a letter enclosed. I then sent Covad Emails explaining why their system could never be connected here. They have admitted to have at least one copy of the Emails. Thereafter, however, we began getting monthly bills of $34.95 for a service that may or may not have been connected at their end ONLY. We never had a connection here.

In fact, when their bills started coming, I had already returned their hardware. The bills kept coming, charged to my mother's Discover card. I Emailed Covad but they ignored me. The Discover bills kept coming. Finally, I was able to get through Covad's telephone screening system. I explained that their system had never been installed and could not be installed without extensive SBC modification, which we could not afford. I might as well have been talking to a stone.

The Covad respondent told me that we would have to pay a $200 early disconnection fee for a service that only they claim was ever installed, in addition to the Discover bills we now dispute. Nothing was ever installed. No calls or use of the system took place. Yet the bills kept coming. Covad is threatening us to force us pay an EXTRA $200 for a service we never had, plus the bills compounded for services we never had.

My elderly mother is terrified. It's bad enough that she lost my beloved stepfather to cancer and find herself alone, but for Covad Communications to extort what little money she has left is terrible. I never signed an agreement with Covad. They cannot show that their system was ever used or even installed. Not a single message or impulse ever went out. I do not know what happened to their hardware returned to them. That was months ago. Covad controls their own "proof." They have made errors or they are simply lying, for the sake of greed. I did not agree to anything. That's all an invention of Covad Communications.

Please help us? I don't know what to do next. I don't want to see my mother in such anxiety. Covad is a lying parasite. They intend to bleed our Discover account dry. What protects us from them? Pertinent information is listed below. Please help us? Thank you for your valuable time.

Sincerely,
Eugene

Covad Direct Customer Support 1-888-642-6823. Contacted (Covad representative refused to give her name or any additional information. Subsequent calls brought identical responses)
Dates of contact were May, 6 August 7, 12,, Several calls during early September.

Type of Resolution Sought: We do not want our Discover Account charged for services we have never had. Covad has been charging our Discover card.

In addition to the letter disputing the charges, inserted from Discover, below, Covad states that they will again charge us for yet another month of service, plus a $200 disconnect fee. For a service that was possibly connected on their end only.
