rI was looking to purchase a Toshiba laptop, retail price $1299. I asked if it would be on sale any time soon. The sales associate told me that at the time they could match a $ 150 rebate that Best Buy was offering. He said that this rebate would be in the form of an instant, in store credit, to be used on other purchases.

I agreed to purchase the laptop and would use the in-store $150 rebate towards the purchase of a printer. When the cashier entered the sale, he entered $1299 for the computer, $ 65 for sales tax and $150 for the rebate, for a total of $1514. He was then going to hand me a credit for $150. They were going to charge me $150 for my $150 rebate! They said this is the way Best Buy does it. Fortunately, I simply walked out of the store without the computer.

I feel the reason why they did this is because I did not use the in-store credit to purchase one of their worthless extended warranties. I was going to use it to buy something of value, like a printer.

In the case outlined what the cashier should have done was to subtract the 150 from the price of the laptop. What we use is called a Valued Customer Rebate Card. With it we can match any mail in rebate offer from a competor, however you do not have to wait for anything in the mail, and can use the rebate at once on the next purchase.

In your case you would/should have been able to use the 150 towards the purchase of a printer or any thing else we sell.

This like many other policies fail due to poor training at our store locations. We want your business, we just make it hard some times.
