This company is the biggest scam/ripoff company in the state of CT! They hire only illehgl immigrants, pay them $8 and hr while charging the clients $25 an hour. I worked in the Farmington office for 2 years, and they treat all their employees like dirt and the average stay of any employee is less than 90 days. They pride themselves on firing people. They brag about how much money they make for so little service they provide. It is sickening to hear upper management speak. They spend their winters in Florida, brag about not paying their caregivers a liveable wage, fire employees if they dont like the way they look or if the owners husband happens to find you attractive. What a joke. PLEASE...run as fast as you can away from these people. I have found much better services for my father with two other companies. The screening process for new hires is they run a police report. That is all. It is a total scam and you will regret ever contacting them.

AUTHOR: Its really a shame - ()

It is a shame! This company does not appreciate its staff. They lose all the staff and managers who work hard and have a passion caring for people. They keep staff that has no idea what they are doing. Their caregivers a groosly underpaid. They went to a new pay system and acutely decreased what they pay caregivers! This company needs new people at the healm. It grew way to fast for the level of knowledge that the owner has. You offer ideas to help, ask for help and nothing is ever address They have no respect for employees in their mind eveyone can be replaced! Just look at the turn over in this company. I think the labor board should look into the issues here! There is a lot that needs to be addressed!

AUTHOR: zoe singer - ()

I am a current employee of Companions and homemakers.  I am confused that this report is not following the guidelines outlined on the "Ripoff Report".  We are asked to not enter rumor or speculation and you need to have personal knowledge of the things in which you are reporting.  What I see is anger, bitterness and an opinion, just that, an opinion.  You are one person of thousands who have been given decent care and are very happy with our services.
I am truly sorry if you encountered caregivers that were of low quality, we are not in the business to send caregivers that steal, smell or are overall rude. We do screen our employees, we do not hire illegals and any caregiver who displays this kind of behavior is terminated from our company.
As far as anyone telling you that you get who we send is an absolute lie.  We have never and would never tell a client they are stuck with a person who is not exceptable to the client.  Again the comment that someone would tell you"she is only telling you this because she does not want to lose her job"  Is also not based on personal knowledge because it never happened and would never happen.  Again I apologize for your discomfort in this company but you are one person who is reporting with only speculation and not facts and as I said before....you know you are wrong in what you are reporting.  Shame on you.  To the original report clients are not charged $25.00 an hour nor are our caregivers only paid $8.00.  If an employee is only with us for 90 days that is because we hold a high standard of our employees and if they show undesirable behavior or the inability to accomplish a job to the companies expectations they are let go.  This is something all companies do and this one is in the business of quality and we remove people of no quality.  I also don't recall the owners of the company bragging about what they are making.  this again is an opinion and obviously does not know the owner of the company.  She is someone who thinks only of the client and the best service we can give and if that means terminating employees in 90 days, so be it.

His Name is Martin

AUTHOR: Amy - (United States of America)

And that's exactly who wrote that rebuttal! I also find it very funny, but more in a pathetic way. As a former employee of this company working as office staff, I can attest to the fact that this is truly a horrible company in every way. They treat their field  and office employees terribly. The owner is mentally ill and the staff are subjected to her manic episodes. People quit or are fired at an alarming rate, the employee turnover in the offfice is like none I have ever seen anywhere. That's a fact that cannot be argued. If this is such a great company, how come you can't keep staff, Martin? From scheduling to payroll to billing most employees are very unhappy with their working environment and are constantly looking for a better job, but because of the economy they are unable to find anything else and are forced to stay!! (HELLO, Mr. "Oh, you worked there for 4 years, you must have loved it!" P.S. She said 2 years) This is the worst company I have ever had the misfortune of working for. There isn't enough time in the day to detail the many ways that this company creates an atmosphere of fear and stress for it's employees. So much of what they do is illegal that in good concience I am filing a report with the DOL in detail. If clients do report satisfaction with service it is because of the caregivers doing a good job and inspite of the management of this company. I honestly don't know how they are still in bussiness. Bill collecters call on past due accounts frequently. Hopefully, it will not be for long. Any one considering using this company or working  for them DON'T. They truly are just in it for the money.

Former gladiator.

AUTHOR: Former gladiator - (United States of America)

People are correct about C&H on here. a complete nightmare.

This was the worst position I ever held in my life, I came in with high expectations and learned within the first two weeks that it was impossible. The owners micromanage everything and their lawyer comes in for any meeting whether it's ten people or just you, it's strange.

Example, a co-worker asked to leave one hour early for a doctors appointment after being there for a few months and was told no, that they were expected to be there all day. I was stunned. Thankfully the lawyer was there as well to supervise the conversation (sarcasm).

Nothing could ever get done because as soon as you did all the work and presented to the owners, they couldn't agree and then you would have to go back and do it all over again and again, and it would likely never move forward.

They also would go to Florida for several months out of the year when things were going downhill or managers had just been fired or quit and basically would scream at you on the phone that something wasn't right, then send the lawyer on you.

Turnover was huge. At least two people would be fired or quit a week and this is in a company with right around 100 people. Even the highest ranking folks sometimes just walked out. The only way to truly survive is to tattle on your co-workers, shut your mouth, and become a "yes" employee. Then you will do fine. Well, maybe. If you bend over backwards and give your best, but also give your opinions when needed, expect to last about six months at the most. You'll end up getting so frustrated, that you hope they escort you to the door. Most likely for it is for a reason that others here mentioned such as that you don't fit in or that you didn't do something right or on time.

I believe they did serve their clients (the primary reason the business is there) well though and had very caring people to take care of the elderly.

The sad part about the whole thing is that the company had some very bright people that all really worked hard and wanted to do the best for the company and the environment literally just sucked the life from them. They ended up being fired for no reason or just walking out because they had had enough. It was sad to watch. In those cases you end up with all the good people gone and crappy "yes" employees left.

Quite honestly, I would have rather been driving a garbage truck and have bamboo shoots shoved under my fingernails, that's honestly how bad it was. Luckily, I quickly got a new management position that is amazing with wonderful and caring co-workers and a competent/smart owner. Good luck!

This is hysterical

AUTHOR: Michelle - (USA)

This so called "rebuttal" obviously came from their HR pawn or legal counsel whatever he is, I think his name is Manuel. If anyone is interested in calling me before they fill out an application, please do so. I will tell you exactly what it is like to work there, and I will tell you about how someone may "accidentally' rub against you,  but when you ask to speak with HR it is like "Who/where is HR?"  The invites to work out with them downstairs and what happens if you turn them down. I will tell you about anything you need to know. Give me your contact number and I will gladly return your call.

An ex-employee who mostly agrees

AUTHOR: kiki987 - (United States of America)

I would like to state first of all, that I am not only a legal resident of the United States, but also was born and raised in the United States.  Companions and Homemakers treated me like dirt and I don't think that they did their clients any favors when they set me up with them either.
I said when I was hired that I could not lift a client, nor was I interested in working with clients with Alzheimer's or dementia.  They paid no attention whatsoever to my requests and scheduled me to work with clients who had those problems.  I wanted to help but was unable to in many cases and had to call for assistance.  They counted these calls for assistance against my record as an employee even though I requested very specifically who I was able to work with.
It was not all bad as one client was very easy to get along with.  This, however, is rare in this sort of business.  I quit less than a month after being hired, but they continue to call and harass me about clients who did not feel they received adequate care from me.  I did the best that I could, but there is only so much an unskilled worker can do in these situations.
They do background checks, because they called me when they were unable to reach all of my references.
Overall, this was a terrible experience and I would suggest that no one work for Companions and Homemakers unless they have received CNA training.

Get the story straight

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

First of all please get the numbers straight.. Average payrate for caregivers range from $8.50-$11 per hour depending on the service and whether the client is a State or Private client.  Payrates for state clients are determined by the State Contact signed and can not be changed.  While perhaps it appears the caregivers are not being paid enough, think of the overhead, office staff payouts each week not to mention things like free home visits and consults.  The money has to come from somewhere.  Insurance is offered after 30 hours, not 40 like most companies.  Some live in caregivers are offered transportation.. For the most part caregivers are offered almost 50% of the bill rate.  Caregivers are told the payrate when hired AND when offered a job so they can decline if they feel they are being underpaid.  This business is not a money making business, it's a life changing business that changes the client's lives and families who have to deal with trying to care for a family member and their own busy lives.  If someone is coming into this business thinking about money signs and not the other rewards that come with the job.. Well they are about to enter the WRONG profession.  Many caregivers are able to work around childrens school schedules, other full time jobs or taking care of their own parents. As far as illegal workers, extensive background checks are done along with a police check.. People ARE turned away if they have bad references or are just not a good match for the company.  And lastly, what company can say the owners of the company do NOT make more than their employees.. Think people are complaining when they watch Donald Trump buy his 10th mansion?  Of course they make more, they took the chance of placing their own finances on the line to start a company and probably struggled for years in doing so.  Do I think they live the lap of luxury?  Umm No they don't walk around bragging about anything and they are very involved with the company even when they are away from the office.  How could the owner's husband fire anyone if he finds you attractive if you've just said he spends most of his time in Florida?  I don't think the owner or owners husband has the time to notice what someone looks like to be completely honest.  People get mad they go wild they complain.. With that you'll also get reports of people saying the services that we provided "changed their lives"  Hey in life sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't.  I'm sure there has been bad experiences.. Happens.. the world is not perfect.

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

Was going to say the exact same thing.

In any event, they must be pretty good employers, as you decided to stay with them for 4 years. And of course they charge more per hour than they pay; that is sort of how businesses work.
