Comwave False/deceptive advertising in Boston daily Metro ,I backed away so my only harm is time wasted, internet

Comwave published a prominent half-page ad on page 3 of the Boston Metro, 9-17-2013 (probably elsewhere too). Comwave did not succeed in capturing any of my money, but I believe it's important to report its deception here.

The Metro is a free daily junk "news" paper distributed mainly to Boston area transit riders. The text, line by line, starts as follows:

"Long Distance"

"You can call from your mobile phone!"

"Lowest rate guarantee to call anywhere in the world"

"Starting from"

"1c/MIN." [the 1c is in large bright red font, beside a full color picture of an aggressive-looking, smiling, pointing, salesman]

I went to the website (comwave.net) and could not find any country I could call for one cent per minute. Calling within the US showed as 2.9 cents.

So I called the phone# at the bottom (1-866-768-8958) and reached a person after 10 minutes. I asked the person where I could call for one cent per minute. She dodged the question, twice. After confirming that the US-to-US rate is 2.9 cents, after a while she said actually I can get that for 1.8 cents. With more questions, I learned that the rate is in addition to a $1.49/month "membership fee."

The ad continues: "Comwave will beat all competitor rates ... Guaranteed!" I told this person that I was currently making calls w/another provider for one cent per minute, with an extra minute charged at each call. She said that's not a "competitor" because it's a prepaid calling card! (That strange exclusion is actually in the fine print at the bottom of the ad. To see that, you need good reading glasses. The type size is truly minuscule, approx 3 points.)

Continuing on to the lower third of the ad:

"Stop counting minutes, get Unlimited Calling long distance"

"UNLIMITED CANADA or USA"

"Unlimited Calling to Canada or USA from your Home or Mobile Phone"

"$5/mth" [in bright red]

There was nothing on the website reflecting this, so I asked the person about this. She assured me that this is a bona fide offer. I had to ask whether that was the full price. Yes, she said, that's the full price -- but "of course" there's an additional $1.49/month "membership fee."

Having unearthed this deception, I backed out without further questions. Therefore I lost only my time spent. From others' reports on RipoffReports, I surmise that there may well be a requirement of continuing involuntary access to a patron's credit card, which would be a disaster for any patron wanting to end service or challenge any other dishonesty.
