In the spring of 2005 (don't remember the exact date, I was in graduate school so the spring time was a blur) A company called First national benefits called offering me a a guranteed 5000$ grant within 3 days. All I needed to do was give my bank and routing numbers. I was hesitant but finally gave in to the high pressure of the marketer (who had very bad english skills and a very heavy indian/paki accent). Once I gave out my account info then I was informed of a one time charge for a free gift. I adamently told the person that I was not to be charged for ANYTHING, then got into a shouting match with the marketer as she upped the pressure, and in fury I hung up the phone. She then preceded to call me back 4 times, each time I insisted that I was not to be charged for anything. The last time that she called (this all happened in about a half hour time span) I told her that I was going to report her to the local authorities and that I was to be removed from all data bases.

Later in the summer, I started to recieve charges on my account for 19.95 from a company called FIRST NATIONAL HEALTH CARE. I contacted my local Wells Fargo branch, who was extremly unhelpful. They told me that I needed to contact the company first to start a "private dispute" before wells fargo could look into the matter. Every time I tried to contact the 800-410-1682 number it went to a voice mail. I left messages which were not returned. I then contacted wells fargo fraud department, who said that they would look into it. The teller from the WF fraud department was rude, telling me that it was "my word against theirs" because I had provided my account information. I informed the woman that I had only authorised deposits, and she said that giving account info by default authorises the company to debit your account.

While all this was happening, I recieved a phone call from a woman representing herself as Sharron Smithe (Smith with an e she emphasised!) Of national recover services fraud departement. She stated that her company is a subcontractor for wells fargo and the government, and that my bank account had recieved fradulent acitivity, and that her company was in charge of returning the money stolen and for prosecuting the criminals involved. She said that she needed me to authorise her company to work on my behalf. I strongly emphasised that I was not authorising any charges to be levied against me, she said that she was subcontracted by wells fargo and that it was a free service provided by J.D.L. Services Inc. About a week later a 399$ transaction posted against my bank account from JDL services!!!! Once again I went through the please hold while I transfer you routine (I didnt even bother to go to the local wells fargo branch this time) where I finally got patched through to wells fargo fraud dept. Now i am waiting to see what transpires of the "investigation" from wells fargo. I plan to file a complaingt with the ftc and BBB, not sure what other recourse I have though. Help! Rip

When, oh when, will people ever learn to never give out banking information, etc., over the telephone when they don't initiate the call? When something sounds too good to be true--it usually is!

Graduate school? How did you manaage that far if you're so easily taken in?
