On 16th June 2005 I received a letter in the post (snail mail) from spain. It was addressed to myself (using surname and initial) and correctly addressed. The postmark is not very readable but starts with 'SELF ML 802'. The stamp shows the cost as **0,78Euros.

The contents of the letter were 2 pages - the first a letter and the second a 'lottery payment processing form'. Both were printed on cheap paper with what looks like a cheap colour inkjet printer.

The letter shows a letterhead with the words 'EURO Millones' La primitiva europea' 'Euromillones Loteria International' and 'Loterias y Apuestas del Estado' and some poor quality pictures/drawings. The sending address is shown as C/AUROA NO 56 28204 MADRID ESPANA TEL/FAX: 34 676-912-453. The bottom of the page has 3 more colour pictures/drawings. One is a 'logo' one a poor copy of a sicker showing 'ministerio de hacienda' and the third is a blurry picture that looks like a ticket with 5 large 0's.

The letter is dated 8th June 2005 and quotes a reference No. SAEGS/2511256003/05 and batch number 03/1362/JAA. It is not addressed to any name but shows Attn: No SAEGS/2551256003/05 (same as the reference number). The heading is AWARD NOTIFICATION.

The content of the letter is similar to others I have read of on this website. It states that I have won a prise in the EUROMILLIONES LOTERIA INTERNATIONAL CHRISTMAS PROMOTION PROGRAM held on 25th May 2005. My ticket number 025-11464992-750 serial number 2113-05 drew the lucky numbers 13-15-22-37-39-45 which won the 3rd category of the Lottery.

It goes on to say that I have been approved for lump sum payout of EUR615,910.00, etc, but to begin my claim I needed to contact the claims agent DON JOHN MELO, foreign Operations Manager of Santa Lucia Security Companyu SA on telephone +34 639 730 258 Fax +34 685 406 028 for processing and remittance of the prise money not later than the 8th July 2005. It also says the bit about to keep this award from public notice that other reports on this website have mentioned.

The 2nd page is intended to be filled in and faxed back and requests BANK DETAILS as well as next of kin etc.

As soon as I saw the request for bank details I figured it was something dodgy to obtain peoples bank details. I checked on the internet and saw all the info on what these people are doing. I rang the phone number and spoke to DON JOHN MELO. I requested an International check to be sent instead of bank transfer. I said that I would not be paying any bank fees first - any fees could be deducted from payment to me. He said he had to verify that I was a winner so I said I would call back later.

When I called back he said he had confirmed I was a winner and this is what I had to do. He expected me to fax the Lottery payment processing form with my DRIVERS LICENCE or PASSPORT for proof of Identification. I said that I would not fax my licence or passport, but for him to send the international draft registered post and I would show my identification to the post office when I collected it and signed for it. I also said that the letter did not ask for licence or passport. By this time he was getting annoyed at me and said 'If you want your winnings I am telling you what you have to do'. I said 'I do not fax my licence or passport to strangers who could use the valid numbers to make fraudulent documents and if he was not a robber he would not be asking me for these to be faxed'.

He hung up on me!!!

I have not sent any money, bank details, licence or passport. However, it really annoys me that people can send these letters out trying to steal people's money, or at the very least, play with people's emotions telling them they have won money when they haven't. Anyone who was running a genuine lottery would understand that these days most people are not game to fax personal documents and bank details.

I really hope the authorities can catch up with DON JOHN MELO and others like him and stop these false letters (and emails).

Thank goodness that the warnings are on the internet. I am glad to see how many people this website has helped. The problem is now that these are being sent normal mail (snail mail) and it is hard to warn everyone as some people do not have the internet.

Please tell everyone you know about this scam.
