My mother-in-law is 92-years old and in a nursing home after suffering a broken hip, heart attack and a stroke. She purchased a long term care policy from Conseco on August 27, 1987 which promised to pay her a daily per diem for up to 730 days.

Despite forwarding all applicable claims information to Conseco, they have continued to create delay after delay, and excuse after excuse to not pay ANYTHING during her entire first year in the nursing home. It is obvious the company has designed a pathetic "so-called" customer service process that is one of the most painful, insensitive, and time-consuming processes a person can stand, in order to get their customers to give up on the claims they are entitled to receive.

In this case, the policyholder lived long enough to pay more in premium than Conseco is supposed to pay as a maximum benefit, so it was a good deal financially for Conseco. But in addition to keeping the 20 years of monthly policy premiums, Conseco is now attempting to make the collection of the insurance benefit so hard to receive, that the 92-year old disabled policyholder (residing in a nursing home) will just "give up" on the effort to collect her benefit. But I will fight for my mother-in-law since she is too old to fight this big insurance giant.

Do not trust Conseco to pay the benefits they describe to you when you are discussing the purchase of any insurance policy with them. If they will abuse a frail disabled senior citizen victim who paid more in the premium than the policy benefit, they will abuse anyone.

Jim, so sorry to hear about your mother. Lots of times insurance companies put you through tons of people and phone calls just to end up where you started because their insurance company is disorganized. I've heard in the past that Conseco is making a ton of changes because of a shady past? I read this article(posted in the title) that talks about their history and things.

Please continue to update us on your mother's situation with Conseco because I am interested in hearing how they resolve your report and hopefully they resolve it soon.

My mother has an ltc policy with Conseco. They sent what looked like a form letter a few years ago claiming she did not have a 5% annual increase in the daily benefit and also demanding repayment of several thousand dollars paid to her due to the 5% annual increase. Of course, all one would have to do to see that she does have the 5% annual increase in daily benefits is to simply look at the policy. Fortunately, I was there to protect my Ahlzheimer's suffering mother from their vile attempt. It was quite a fight. If they had gotten away with it they would have, thus far, succeeded in ripping her off for $189,000+.

Conseco sold the Long Term Care business--no longer involved

AUTHOR: Mrpicture - (U.S.A.)

I work for Conseco Health via PMA. Conseco Health pays its benefits. None of my customers have EVER complained about not receiving benefits.

Understand Conseco is a holding company and has several divisions.

I am sorry for the problem your mother in law is having, but Conseco no longer sells long term care coverage--another company operates that business. Her policy may still say Conseco on it, but Senior Health Insurance Co. of Penn assumed management of these policies in 2008. This is documented on the internet--simply google it.
