Consumer Law Associates is a rip off. We were instructed to stop all contact with credit card companies and to stop all contact with them altogeher. They did nothing on our behalf. Not one company other than Consumer Law Associates recieve one cent or even called on our behalf. Now the interest, late fees, and penalties are so ridiculously high we may lose our home.

We have canceled our account with them, however, after paying in over $6000 we only recieved $244. Our credit before consumer law associates was in the 700s and everything was being paid but it was a struggle to do so. After hiring Consumer Law Associates and doing everything they said to do we have a credit score in the 400s and can't even sell our home and buy a smaller one.

We have filed complaints with the BBB, FTC and the Texas Attorney General. They are predators who take advantage of people at their most vulnerable.

CLA is not a rip off

AUTHOR: jlbrok - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, August 18, 2010

CLA takes out their fees first. which may not be the best arrangement if you have creditors banging down your door.   But they aren't a fraudulent company; if you do your part (fax in all letters from creditors in a timely manner, put in every last available free cent you have every month towards your account, paying off the fees in a timely manner) then they do the service you contract them for and for a lower percentage than most of these companies that offer similar services do.

Plus, if you have any account that goes into a legal status, they will provide hours upon hours of consultations with an attorney, legal documents, and legal advice.

The trick with all of these debt settlement companies, and something that they don't tell you upfront is that if you don't have the money to put into the savings account above and beyond what the monthly fee is, they aren't going to be able to do anything for you.  To make the debt settlement work, you have to be able to give them money to make offers.  Also, creditors sell debt all the time, so if you don't send them every single letter you receive from creditors, it is possible that they could make a settlement agreement with someone who has already sold off your debt.

Be smart.   If you don't have the money to make cash offers on your debt, file for bankruptcy.  But don't accuse these companies of fraud; they do what they're supposed to do, especially this one, but they charge a fee that you agree to in the contract, and they work with whatever money is left AFTER they take their fee.  Keep that in mind before you enter an agreement with them, and make sure you are doing what is in your financial best interest, and understand the debt settlement gamble is just that -- a gamble. And you need money to gamble!
